December 17, 2014: Akemi Scrooged! Everything Is Coming Up Dark Matter!

So much for the Christmas spirit.  Today, Akemi did something she rarely ever does.  She actually bought herself something.  The girl hardly ever spends on herself but, this afternoon, she made an exception when she came across a cup emblazoned with the letter A at a local shop.  Being a big tea drinker – and having a name that starts with the letter A – she thought it would be perfect, so she bought it.  About an hour later, she was getting off the subway, when some guy, in an obvious rush, bumped into her, knocking her purchase out of her hand.  The guy didn’t even slow down, jumping into the car and heading off, leaving Akemi to check on her cup – which was, of course, shattered.  Her disappointment was apparently so apparent that a subway employee consoled her with a shoulder pat and some words of encouragement.

Still, in good spirits. And silly slippers.

Well, two more days until we depart for the holidays – which means roughly a week’s worth of ground to cover before we go.  In addition to tomorrow’s early EARLY morning tech survey (which leaves the production offices at 7:00 a.m., meaning I’ll have to leave my place at 6:30 a.m., meaning I’ll probably have to wake up for 5:45 a.m.), I’ve still got to do another pass on scripts for episodes #103, #104, #105, and #106, incorporate Jay’s notes into #107, #108, and #109, and get notes from Paul on #112.  Oh, and then there’s the meetings.  And the camera tests!  Today, Lawren, our VFX Supervisor, showed us some preliminary FTL (fast than light) effects as well as some animatics of the ship – and the missile pursuit.  Very cool.  I’m making a note to keep everything on file so that I can share with you all in time.

Meanwhile, the production offices are embracing the Dark Matter theme…

I need to place this on my dash, otherwise Vanessa will knock off my side mirror with a baseball bat.

  1. I feel so bad for Akemi. What a rude individual that ran into her and didn’t even bother to apologize. I hope that she can get another cup.
Merry Christmas to the both of you!

  2. Wait a minute. You have a cafeteria…??

So if you pull Akemi’s hair straight up, her tongue pops out??

  3. Aww, poor Akemi! That sucks. I love the Bubba/pug themed shirts though.

Oh Joe, I’m up every weekday @ 6am, and off to work at 7! I do get done at 3:30pm though so that’s the upside. Wow, EVERYTHING *IS* turning up Dark Matter!

  4. You know Joe, if you gave us the address to your studio, where we can send things, we could replace Akemi’s broken cup. Many times over, I’m sure.

  5. I’m behind so ……

    Hi Roxanne

Sorry about Akemi’s cup. 🙁 What a rude person.

Akemi’s cookie tags were wonderful! The cookies all looked delicious. I would also ike to know who won. :p

  6. Love the picture and promotional stuff. Will copies be available in the lobby for tourists and guests? Will members of your blog get the complimentary 10 percent discount? 😊 Sorry to hear of Akamai’s run in with the jerk class. Boorishness knows no race. Joe I was in transit between NRT and HND the other day. I chose to take the train for the trip. I got to experience first hand the crowded trains. It was so tight the station personnel could have used a shoe horn to get people in the train. He was pushing people in order to get the doors closed. With your meany trips to Japan, have you ever experienced this? Is the screens back ground picture available? I would like to put it on my computer screens (yes I have 4) at work. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

  7. I so want to get excited over DM, but I am SO afraid to get my hopes up! So many disappointments tv-wise over the last few years with everything I like getting the axe before it has a chance of coming into its own. I am a very cynical tv viewer these days. 😛

RE: Axe. It just looks better to me that way. Ax looks like an incomplete word…like something’s missing. So why does my spell check keep putting those squiggly red lines under ‘axe’ if it’s still an acceptable, albeit now less frequent, spelling of the word. I think I’m just gonna go back to spelling everything in archaic English just to totally freak out my spell check. (Note: Spell check does NOT put squiggly lines under ‘gonna’…go figger.)

  8. Boo! Rude people suck! I make it a point to punch rude people in the face*. They soon learn not to be so rude.

Joe, at least you now have an idea for that last minute Christmas present for Akemi!

I was just thinking the other day that it’s been a long time since we’ve had far future or non Earth-based science fiction on TV. Most sci-fi is either set in the present day or near future and usually set on or near Earth. I understand the reasons for that from a production standpoint (it makes location shoots MUCH easier) but most (all?) sci-fi that I read is set way, way in the future and often way, way out in space. This is what excites me about Dark Matter. It’s proper sci-fi! I’m hoping for Farscape meets Firefly.

    * Not really. That would be rude!

  9. What I’m interested in, are the contents of the “Casting” folder next to Volume 1, pic #3! Any reveals anytime soon? 😀

  10. Haha! I just checked this, too, and saw that the cast had been announced. I’ve got to say, well done! Roger, Zoie, and Jodelle are of course awesome choices, proven amazing actors. For a couple of the others, all I had to do was look at them and I knew why you cast them(I’m sure they read really well, too, but they definitely “look” the part, as well).

I love Roger in Continuum, and that’s where I’m curious. I just heard that Continuum got picked up for a final 6 episodes airing in 2015(I assume summer, since that’s when the series typically aired). Is that going to create an issue with filming schedules? It also makes me wonder if there was a non-compete clause in his Continuum contract, but then would that be nullified by the show’s wrapping up? It’s not really a big deal, just an interesting situation. Roger is fantastic at being the bad guy with no rules that you fear will do anything at any time for no reason whatsoever, yet you secretly want him on your side.

DM’s really starting to come together now! Woohoo!

Wait a minute….last week you said something about some weapons meetings. Did those not happen or did the final designs get approved and you just want to be secretive about them?

    -Mike A.

  11. @Das, that’s hilarious and somehow vaguely creepy at the same time!

Yes, the cast list is looking great!

  12. Joe, if Akemi used a credit card for her purchase she may be able to be reimbursed for the purchase (if the card has insurance with it).
