With the news that Sony is fast-tracking a superhoine movie that will hit the big screen before the turn of the decade (http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=41823), I thought this would be a good time to weigh in with my suggestions for My Top 11 Superheroines in need of the big screen treatment!  Just in case the studios were wondering…

August 5, 2014: Top 12 Superheroines In Need Of The Big Screen Treatment!

BATWOMAN

I’ll be honest with you.  I’d sooner watch a movie featuring this fantastic new and improved version of Batwoman than another Batman movie.

BLACK WIDOW

I know.  She’s already received the big screen treatment.  Still, rather than play second banana to Iron Man and the rest of The Avengers, I’d love to see Natasha Romanoff headline her own big screen adventure.  Less alien swarms invading the Earth and more espionage, counter-espionage, and reverse counter-counter-espionage with a twist of lime.

DOMINO

Yes, there was a movie called Domino that came out in 2005.  A terrible movie. And a different Domino.  A kick-ass protagonist with a bit of a mean streak to boot.

ELEKTRA

Like Jennifer Garner, let’s forget that other movie never happened and start fresh.

GHOST

Mystery!  Suspense!  Intra-dimensional travel!  And one awesome heroine!

August 5, 2014: Top 12 Superheroines In Need Of The Big Screen Treatment!

JENNY SPARKS

A great character with a narrative that spans most of the 20th century.  There’s potential here for a dozen movies.  Also, love the accent.

KABUKI

Agent for a super-secret government organization called “The Noh”, operating in near-future Japan.

August 5, 2014: Top 12 Superheroines In Need Of The Big Screen Treatment!

POWER GIRL

A female superhero to rival Superman!

PROMETHEA

Magic, mysticism, and a provocative and engaging narrative.  If the big screen version could look half as good as the comic, it would be spectacular.

August 5, 2014: Top 12 Superheroines In Need Of The Big Screen Treatment!

SHE-HULK

Brilliant attorney by day, kick-ass superhero by – er – also day.  As far removed from The Hulk as Spiderman is from Superman.  Number two on this wish list after Batwoman.

SILVER SABLE

Because I have a soft spot for female mercenaries.

WONDER WOMAN

Come on.  This one’s way overdue.

  1. You mean the good big screen treatment, right? Because the generic one for this genre might not be so good.

  2. I really think that before they made the first Avengers, they should have made a Black Widow & Hawkeye movie. They were the only ones we didn’t already know and they obviously had some history we weren’t introduced to. It was like I’d missed a movie when I saw the Avengers. They could still go and do one about them, I suppose.

Another one they could do, considering how popular Wolverine is, is one about his female clone, X-23. They do seem to like any excuse to include Wolverine in something.

  3. Not a fan of female heroes, but I must say I enjoy Johansson’s treatment of the Black Widow and could possibly be interested in a movie featuring said character/actress.

Mostly, however…I’m movied out. Not sure what’s wrong with me, but nothing on tv or the big screen is of any interest to me (though I do want to see GotG – just not sure when). Maybe I’m just too content watching and re-watching those old Adam-12 eps. Somewhere over the past year I lost my enthusiasm for anything new entertainment-wise. I think I’m turning into an old fuddy-duddy. 😛

  4. to DP;
i agree, any movie of theses needs to be good.

    to Bailey;
Melinda, Super Boobs are lethal weapons. Fanboys covet and fear them.
    LOL!
just dealing with large boobs (finding bras that fit, back & shoulder pain, etc.) should be a super power.

  5. No Supergirl? I agree, the 1984 Helen Slater version is hard to beat but it must be time for a reboot.

  6. I am a fan of Black Widow! Johansson rocked the part and I’m planning on watching “Lucy”. Probably not planning on see the above flicks you mentioned.

JeffW: Let me know how the tandoori chicken goes.

  7. I think you just helped me figure out why I never liked comic books, especially super hero ones. Primarily is the issue that writing is important to me.. so I am not wild about reading comics/graphic novels. I want wonderfully crafted words and descriptions. I always knew that.

But beyond that, those suggested heroines helped crystallize the rest..the tendency to have over the top macho violence, simplistic good vs evil, and all women sporting size double D boobs and tiny waists… So sexist in so many ways. My idea of heroes doesn’t begin to fit into superheroes, can’t get into them, at all. Yeah, I grew up on Superman but then, we didn’t have much choice on tv shows. And I have liked most of the superman and spiderman movies… but that’s about it. Give me strong real women, keep the super-heroines.

But then, even on facebook where a recent study was done (already massively skewed since most facebook users are women!).. the vast majority are males, mostly unmarried and under the age of 30. Making male superheroes into women, even creating new women superheroes– I will be seriously surprised if it changes the reader demographics. Maybe more if they put women who aren’t so sexualized to entice young male readers..but I doubt that will do a lot.

  8. Super Girl, She-Ra, Barb Wire, Cat Woman and Electra ruined superheroine movies for me.

I would love a Xena, Mystique, Storm or Jean Gray film, but I’d root more for a movie about Sydney Bristow, Faith Lehane, Buffy or Max from Dark Angel. I’ll watch anything with the awesome Gina Carano or Zoe Bell.

  9. I’ve always had a girl crush on Vampirella. Don’t know if she’s ever been in a movie. I liked the Witchblade TV series to when it was on. I think Sara Pezinni should get a movie too.

  10. I would like a movie based on the pre-New 52 version of the Birds of Prey (Oracle, Black Canary, and Huntress at least).

By the way, what’s going on with the Star Trek rewatch?

  11. Where’s Carol Danvers? 🙂 A Captain Marvel movie is my dream. But after that, I’m dying for a Black Widow and a Wonder Woman movie. And I too would love a Birds of Prey movie!

I’m going to check out those female heroes I don’t know.
