Yesterday, Akemi and I (and our lodger, Petunia) met up with fellow foodies Nicole, Missy, Lan, and Milla Jovovich (No, not THAT Milla Jovovich) for a Sunday food truck tour, Vancouver style!  And by “Vancouver style!” I mean wet and miserable. But only the weather!  The food was pretty darn good.

Since we were food truck trekking on a Sunday, our options were limited.  Even our limited options were further limited by the no-shows of several food trucks (Yes, Feastro the Rolling Bistro and Mom’s Grilled Cheese Truck, I’m talking about you). But we made the best of things…

Clockwise from left: 1) Organic pork belly confit and free-range egg sandwich with spinach, yolks, and honey dijon, 2) truffle potato skewers, 3) extra bacon.

And for dessert - some damn big beignets (cinnamon and powdered sugar) along with a salted caramel dipping sauce.

From there, we headed over to the Japadog shop for a Japanese take on a North American favorite.  We sampled three varieties…

Cheese smoke with cream cheese and avocado. I say yes to the avocado and a polite no to the cream cheese. But this seemed to be Nicole's favorite.

Ebi (shrimp) tempura dog on top and croquette (crispy mashed potato) dog on the bottom. I'd give both a solid meh. Akemi found the addition of rice in the croquette dog a bizarre double carb decision.

We picked up Japadog and, since it was so cold and miserable (and we had the dogs), we decided to just eat in the car.  On our way there, Nicole noticed a shop called Mancakes that specializes in Manly cupcakes.  Well, what’s a food truck tour without dessert?

The entire Mancakes lineup - mini version.

The manly cupcake flavors included: Chicago Popcorn, Buffalo Wing, King Kong (chocolate, banana cream, and espresso marshmallow), Breakfast (bacon, egg cream, granola and maple syrup), Apple Brie, Tequila Pineapple, Whiskey Lime, Bacon Chili Chocolate, Chocolate Red Wine, Pink Peppercorn Grapefruit, Rum and Coke, and the daily special which was, I believe, Pepperoni Pizza.  Winners: Buffalo Wing, Whiskey Lime, Chicago Popcorn, Pink Peppercorn Grapefruit.  Loser: That Pepperoni Pizza.  Sausage and cream = not a good mix.

A great time was had by all.  Next time, Nicole will be leading our Chinatown tour!

  1. Only you could find food trucks that serve gourmet fare. The food trucks around here serve tacos and bbq.

So there’s more than one Milla Jovovich out there? Interesting. 🙂

Do the puppies get to eat leftovers? And are these food trucks the ones featured in Psych? 😉

    @Das Happy Wedding Anniversary!

  2. Well, SOME of that food sounds good, but I can’t say I like the sound of some of those cupcakes. I guess I like my cupcakes girly and frilly, or something. Or, at least sweet. I’d have to try them, I suppose. I may think differently!

You want bad weather? All day here we’ve had freezing rain, and then it changed to massive amounts of ice pellets – walking from the bus to the parking lot for the car after work was like getting hit constantly by waves of buckshot! Not to mention that the roads were becoming extremely slippery from kazillions of icy ball bearings that were all over them. Now it sounds like the wind is coming up to add to the fun, and it’s supposed to turn to snow overnight for a total of somewhere around 10cm. I’ll trade you weather!! 🙂

  3. I would try the pork belly confit sandwich, sounds very tasty. While I love tempura ebi, as a dog it does not appeal. Heck yeah, I want a rum and coke cupcake!

We have had a lovely rain and snow mix. We even had thundersnow a few days ago, along with brilliant lightning. My pansies are confused and upset. Spring in the Rockies, 14 inches pf fresh snow for the skiers, slush for the valley.

  4. No grilled cheese truck? 🙁

Milla looks pretty cool in her yellow raincape. 😀

  5. @ whoviantrish – Thanks! Can you imagine ANYone putting up with me for even a day, let alone 24 years? He’s amazing. 🙂

    das

  6. @Dasndanger, your hubby likely is amazed you also put up with him that long. A really great partner is not easy to find. Congrats.

Joe, just wondering, were you all speaking English, or Japanese while on your outing? How is your Japanese coming along?

In Alberta, we have the winter that just won’t end. It has been sunny, but it has also been extremely cold – 20 yesterday and -5 today. Snow melt? The frozen snow laughs at our desire for snow melt. And not in a nice way.

  7. Wow! I just saw this and had to share.. The Walking Dead’s season finale drew in 15.7 MILLION viewers! That’s amazing! Just create something half as good.. a show drawing in 7.5 million is nothing to sneeze at. 😀 That’s how it works, right? 😉

  8. @ arcticgoddess – Yer prolly right on that one. 😉

@ Maggiemayday – Totally read that as: “My panties are confused and upset.” For a sec there I was confused and upset, too. 😛

  9. Das: Congrats! Time flies doesn’t it?

Love the doggie pictures. Love the name Petunia! That is so perfect for a pug. I’ll remember that. We have to name the critters sometimes at the humane society.

Not sold on those manly cupcakes….. I’ll stick with traditional favors.

I’ve always wanted to try beignets. When my son goes off to school, I want to take hubby on a trip to New Orleans. That might be the perfect time for beignets. 😉

gforce & arcticgoddess: Come on down. Mississippi is sunny and 75F today. When it hits 100F this summer, I’ll be begging to go see youze guys!

  10. Those Japdogs looked so tempting. Kismet? It was funny; as I stepped out from work today a food truck specializing in cupcakes was parked across the street. I decided, with my wallet in hand this time, to procure a sample. I bought the “Motherload.” A chocolaty having a peanut butter center on a pretzel crust with a cream cheese topping. Well I will say some times simple is better.

On another note, I am ready for the convening of the book club.

  11. Personally I’m waiting for Ricks “We are the Walking Dead” line. I genuinely don’t know when it’ll come but come on, it’ll be awesome.

  12. Also speaking of Season 5. The characters Tara, Rosita and Gareth are now series regulars. There’s 3 that won’t die soon.

  13. Manly cupcakes, love that. Cupcakes always remind me of grade school parties. Those hot dogs look tasty but maybe too salty? The tempura dog looks amazing.
