Seeing as how I’m here, a quick mailbag question for you. When writing dialogue for a character with a pronounced accent (Carson Beckett, for example), do you write the dialogue using acented spellings of words (“cannae” instead of “can’t”, for instance), or do you use plain English and leave the actor to decide how to pronounce individual words?

38. @Shawn Cassidy, your answer to question 1 is quite inspired.

I was washing sheets at 10pm SAST (South African Standard Time). Blame cat-hurl. Luckily the temperature is still 75 degrees (24 degrees C) and they are almost dry now it’s midnight.

Goodluck to all, I’m going to bed.

39. hey, nice competition, but I have another question in this nice day. Is it true what Shanks has said? No another SG1 movie? the end? Thats very sad…. what to say…sg1 was the best of franchise

40. 11:55?! Bah! I was still in class then!

Just as well; I don’t think it’d look good if I won again. 😉

Congratulations to the 3 winners!!

41. In the spirit of Shawn Cassidy, wouldn’t the first people (that we know) through the gate have been alternate-O’neill and his team in Moebius?

42. Tammy – Re how long your Husband will be obsessed with the Reader… you’d better start making a list of creative distractions. At least 2 years worth.
I thought I had your email address but I don’t. If you have mine, did you want to drop me an email and I can point you to some good Sci Fi/Fantasy ebook places.
Going to be 35 degrees here today (95F) so I can’t imagine being as cold as you guys! Stay warm and may the Toilet Paper Gods be kind to you.

43. @ Michael A. Burstein – I say you should get a prize anyway!! Thanks for the laughs! 😆

das

44. @ jonathanquirk – You should get a prize, too! 😆

The best answers have been the wrong ones – I love it! 😀

das

45. @ Bryan M. White – Our lastest weather update has us in a long period of ‘wintery mix’, so we’re only supposed to get 6″ – give or take. That could be good – or bad – it may mean a LOT of ice, which will just make the weakened trees and lines weaker, and we may have more power outages due to it.

The rest of the southern half of South Jersey is looking at 6″-12″ (inc. Atlantic City), the northern half of SJ and the far north-west corner of the state are looking at 12″-18″, and then Wilmington, through Philly and Trenton and on up into NYC, is looking at 18″-24″. Honestly, at this point I would prefer 2 feet of light fluffy snow over wet, icy heavy snow.

I’ve seen all the feral cats but one – a small little female – and I’m worried about her. She’s young and not used to this weather. 🙁

das

46. Yeah pg. You already have all the prizes 😉

Was watching a doco last night on Volcanoes in the solar system and they’d roped in some Caltech people for expert opinion. Can you minor in documentary commentary?

47. ok someone is tampering with the Touchstone again. It was 46 this a.m. and since my bedroom faces north, it’s always 10 degrees colder(well it feels it). Then I hear another cold front on Friday!!!! At least I ‘m not shoveling snow.

I have a feeling the tropics are gonna be busy this year, whether or not we get hit with any storms, I don’t know. Just a feeling.

Wow – good luck to y’all with the contest. Good luck to you Joe going thru all those answers. I think I knew the answer to the first question, I was lost after that. Speaking of games, where’s the Stargaet-SG1/ Atlantis Scene It dvd game??? Now that would be cool!!!!

48. Hey Joe,

I have a friend who is a medic in the AF, and this person was saying that a medic is not an officer but on SGU it was said that a medic is an officer or something of that sort. I was just wondering if you could clarify anything, thanks!

Best,

Squall78

49. hi, joe,

any chance on a comment from you on what michael shanks said about the slim chances on a 3rd sg1 movie?

please throw some hope on this sad news…

50.
pg15

11:55?! Bah! I was still in class then!

Just as well; I don’t think it’d look good if I won again. 😉
Wow, PG-15, pretty confident, aren’t we…. 😉

I’m looking for an agent. Anybody have any ideas?

Patricia

51. Hello,

Wasn’t one of Eli’s movies “Planet of the Apes”? “I know it’s just a mirage, but I SWEAR one of those dunes looks just like the Statue of Liberty”. Then, he quoted Heston’s last line of the film.

Sincerely,

Bryan M. White

52. @ Michael Burstein. You, sir, are either channelling me, or you have a brain that is wired alarmingly like mine. Loved your answers, as well as the fact that you take the time to participate here. You’re good people.
Glad to see so many people jumping on the contest. I’ll not bother answering, since others have already done better. Thanks for hosting such a fun event. Looking forward to seeing what the winners manage to collect.
Oh, and creepy doll looks intersting. Have to devide if I want to make a stab at it. It would make an interesting object to get autographed one day.

53. Hey Squallie… medics are enlisted, not officers. Drives me crazy. And were TJ actually an officer, she’d not be in the COC anyway.

Wanders off mentally….

Happily, I just got my laptop back from he extended warranty hospital. They replaced the hard drive. Happily again, I backed up all my documents, pictures and photos, and don’t have much in the way of programs to re-install. Unhappily, I didn’t back up my bookmarks and my creaky old PC which has the same ones as the laptop did, won’t let me download the bookmark transfer thingy. Meh. Means I have to rebookmark everything by hand. Sigh. Trip down memory lane in the meantime, I suppose.

Given the aforementioned aggravations, my participation in the virtual world has been sporadic at best.

I did not watch the Superbowl, but had I been bribed with those tasty desserts, I would have done so gleefully. In costume. Whistling. You betcha.

54. @Das

Thanks for the update. 18-24 inches, this should be interesting. I heard that Tuesday night, we should start getting a lot of freezing precipitation changing to about a foot of snow, and we’ve already started preparing for the likelyhood that the office will be closed.

I’ve stocked up on my supplies, and should be good to go.

I hope you and your hubby don’t have to go out either.

Best wishes,
Bryan

55. Joe, thanks for the yumm foodie pictures and very nice looking fellas.
You cooked the meat for sandwiches, what a humungo sandwich,, looks wonderful. Glad your team won, and that there are lots of answers to your latest contest. I am enjoying reading the answers, some I forgot, so thanks to everyone who posted. A nice way to kill time until April.

56. I feel a little less nerd because i didnt knew all the answers, but i fell a lot nerd by knowing at least half of them XD

57. According to a Gateworld.net story about an interview with Michael Shanks, he believes that there won’t be a third SG-1 Movie. Is there any truth to this, or is it an actor starting a rumor?

59. Hey Joe

I really am an SGU fan, its just that you wouldn’t know it from reading my answers and the fact that I haven’t seen all the eps already screened, – anyway here goes nothing….

1) Matthew Scott

25) Haven’t seen Justice yet!

I know I know, and I call myself a fan! Oh dear, I’ve failed miserably!

60. Speaking of which, Caprica will probably end up being cancelled by Syfy, it has now dropped to 1.1 million viewers, not sure how many people are watching this here, it doesn’t look good for the show at least, great for Stargate though :3

61. I know all the answers! But I doubt I would qualify! Fun contest Joe!

62. @Das

Hello,

just checking in to see if you found the last of the cats? Hopefully they are all okay.

Sincerely,

Bryan

63. Wow – I have some catching up to do on the show (except for #7), based on all the great answers. Wish I could join, but my life seems to be centered around the number 2 lately. I’m staying at 2 places (my mom’s at night, then dashing off to my place to get mail and ready for work in the morning), 2 jobs (finally starting second job again 2 times/week now that I can drive in heavy traffic), knee therapy 2wice a week, and visiting mom in the nursing home almost everyday, which is making me 2 tired for much of anything else.

I haven’t been able to keep up with everything on the blog, but I do have one question. You said, “Why the need for additional power sources when the ship was specifically designed to draw energy from the stars it would pass along the way”. Good point.

Then why were ZPM’s developed? Is there some advantage to them as a primary energy source for propulsion? And why wasn’t the ability to draw energy from stars used as backup system on all Ancient ships? Okay, that was 3 questions. And apologies if they have already been asked.

64. “Who was the first person through the gate?”

Dr. Ernest Littlefield!

(Did you mean another gate? 😉

65. Shank says in an interview that he doubts there will be another SG1 movie… is he right or just pessimistic?
scifiwire.com/2010/02/why-michael-shanks-thinks-stargate-sg-1-is-history.php

66. @paloosa

Hello,

The Ancients started out with solar energy as a power source. Remember that in “The Last Man” Sheppard and McKay even note that Atlantis had old solar panels…

Then they started using ZPMs. So from a timeline perspective, Destiny was created at some point after the Ancients harnessed the power of the sun, but before they learned how to derive massive amounts of vacuum energy derived from self contained regions of sub-space time.

Did I just establish that I know way too much about the Atlantis series???

Sincerely,
Bryan

67. Joe,

Should I have put that last comment in quotes? Sorry.

Sincerely,

Bryan

68. Shanks doesn’t have any more information than the rest of us. He probably has less in fact, since I doubt he reads as much stargate news as many fans do.
I don’t get why everyone’s freaking out as though his personal opinion is official confirmation.

69. Hey Joe,

I am sooo feeling like an unworthy fan!!! OMG did you see all the answers. I know the first one. hmmm, maybe playing the SGU drinking game during each episode has a little more of an affect than I thought. ooops

I better buy the DVD set and rewatch those episodes. *giggles*

*hangs head in shame* Such a bad bad fan…

Best to you Joe,
Always,
Cheryl 🙂

70. Joe — I liked “Jonathanquirk”‘s answers best. I think you should pony up an extra prize for him!

It’s 2:30am-ish here and I’m trying not to laugh too loudly to wake up everyone else in the house after reading his list!

@ JQ – You *ROCK* Babe!!

71. @ Shadow Step : ba dum dum! (cymbal crash) Good one!

@ Michael Burstein: ROFL – those were mostly my answers, too – but I don’t have little ones to blame. Just CRS (can’t remember s***).

So, Joe – who won?

Lisa

72. I echo Das…

@ jonathanquirk –You should get a prize, too!

@ Michael A. Burstein – I say you should get a prize anyway!! Thanks for the laughs!

ROFLMAO… very funny Guys… very funny indeed!

Thanks for the contest Mr. M… enjoyed it immensely!

Cheers

73. I realise I’m nowhere near the first three but I thought I’d answer ’em anyway.

1. Who was the first person through the gate?
I’m going to assume you meant in SGU (Lt Matthew Scott) but if you mean ‘for real’ (so to speak), it would have been some unnamed Ancient Alterany nutjob.

2. How old is Adam Brody and what is his profession?
Adam Brody is 36 (disbelieving snort from Eli) and he’s an engineer.

3. What substance are they looking for in Air III?
Calcium carbonate. Calcite. High concentration granular limestone. Don’t ask me if there’s a difference.

4. What did T.J.’s father do for a living?
He’s a tailor, taught her stitching. Wish he’d come ’round to my place and teach me cos I can’t sew a straight line.

5. Whose water rations does a dehydrated Rush down when he comes through the gate in Air III?
Riley’s. Poor Riley.

6. What does Camile want Sharon to get rid of in Life?
An ugly chair. If I recall correctly, it was red and honestly, I thought it was quite nice so she can send it to me if she likes.

7. What natural disaster does Lisa Park positively hate?
Lisa can’t stand earthquakes due to being in one when she was thirteen and cutting her feet on broken glass. Poor lass.

8. Whose death kicks off Justice?
The much unlamented Spencer. Always look on the bright side of life, I say.

9. Rush earned a graduate to what prestigious university?
Is a graduate a scholarship? Cos he says scholarship. And did you know there is actually an Oxford scholarship particularly for students from Scotland? Google’s so useful.

10. Who is the first person selected in “the lottery”?
Airman Becker. I think you should give that lad more to do; he’s very sweet.

11. In Life, Spencer pushes this individual so hard to exercise that he ends up vomiting. Who is he?
(The possibly soon-to-be late or brainfried) Dr Franklin.

12. How does Rush choose to spend his final moments in Light?
In his quarters reading the last 100 pages of a truly mediocre book. Not that I can paraphrase every Rush line or nuffin’.

13. Who is the first one to fall sick on the planet in Time?
Volker. He should have just taken his jacket off. He looked awfully hot all buttoned up like that.

14. Which crew member is seriously injured in Earth?
Riley. Poor Riley. You are bringing Riley back, aren’t you?

15. Both Eli and Greer come up with clever inventions in Water. What are they?
Eli comes up with a floating via kino trolley but for real inventiveness, Greer has to win The New Inventor’s prize because I think it takes more ingenuity to come up with a flamethrower when you’re stuck at the end of the universe with limited resources.

16. What pseudonym does Eli use when he pays his mother a visit in Earth?
Philip Fry (which is apparently from Futurama).

17. What is missing from Wray’s painting in Life?
A row boat but it looks more like a canoe to me.

18. Where is the gun discovered in Justice?
In an air vent in Colonel Young’s quarters. All seemed a little dodgy that one.

19. According to Rush, how cold is the planet in Water?
Minus 47 degrees celcius. Does the US military work in celcius or fahrenheit?

20. How old is Dale Volker and what is his profession?
Volker is 34 and according to him, ‘a pretty fine astrophysicist’. Not a hack.

21. Who eventually sits in “the chair”?
The (possibly soon-to-be late or brainfried) Dr Franklin. Honestly, some people should just take responsibility for their own actions.

22. What did Chloe Armstrong major in at Harvard?
Political Science and getting jobs with parents. I added that last bit by myself.

23. Name Eli’s top 4 desert island movies.
Hackers (obviously); The Matrix; Old School (which I’d never actually heard of before); and Empire if he can’t have all three original Star Wars films.

24. What movie does Rush quote from in Time?
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

25. What does Young tell everyone happened to Rush back on the planet in Justice?
Tripped himself up, started a rockslide. The lying swine. Young, that is, not Rush.

74. And…….the page is loading…..never fear the Irish are here…..wah?….Huh? 79 responses?

I am totally with Michael Burstein’s responses on this one!!
@Micheal We recently welcomed our newest (and 4th addition)…back on bottle duty again my friend…

@PG15 : Huh?? C’mon! You get in to CalTech and you blow the big quiz??? What gives young Jedi??
You coulda been a contenda!

*Scene reminiscent of Deer Hunter:
of Shirt’n’Tie ripping up several small betting slips, dark glasses hanging from nose, giant wooden fans humming in the ceiling in a heavin smoke filled internet betting room buried in deepest Ireland*

Best to all

S’n’T

75. G’day Joe

I cannot even remember what I had for breakfast let alone all these questions.
I only remembered the pistol was found in an air vent, but not whose room.

Very funny answers from some funny people. You guys crack me up.

76. Interesting answers from some…. How will you pick the winner? First to post all the right ones?

Narelle: I sent you an e-mail about the sci-fi e-books. As for the cold, our temperatures here are “usually” moderate. This winter is the aberration. My body can’t handle the cold very well, so I stay inside as much as I can. I feel the most sorry for all those getting the large amounts of snow/ice! Cold is one thing but snow/ice is a whole different game! I can’t imagine how the utility workers get out in this mess and repair the lines. Important job but miserble.
How are the winters in Australia? Cause the summer temps (108F), you mentioned, sound killer!

77. @dasNdanger

Thanks! Um. 🙂

@Thornyrose

I’m glad you liked my answers, such as they were. I enjoy participating here, I only wish I had more time to really get into it.

I do have to say that had I had the time and managed to read the post as early as possible, I might have tried a little harder with my answers. In particular with answer number 11. 🙂

78. @pastrygirl

I suspect that for most people for whom those were the answers, they wouldn’t even have bothered. But I took it as a challenge to see how many answers I could get right with the phrase, “Um.” 🙂

@Shirt’n’Tie

Congratulations! We’re still on bottle duty of course, but have also moved onto solid food.

79. @Michael A. Burstein – Your last line added to my brain fog. I find out Thursday if I miscalculated the due date or if we need a minivan. Was there a wait between hearing “Hmm…” and finding out for you guys?

And I almost hit “submit” without adding @Michael A. Burstein. That would’ve made SO much sense default-addressed to Joe. See where my head is?

80. Thanks Cheveron 7 for saying my answer was “Brilliant” and Thanks to deeinsouthafrica. You guys made my day.

But thanks most of all to Joe for a fun contest!

Shawn

81. DP: are you having twins? Congrats and God help you 😀 ! My neighbor is a twin, she said growing up with a twin was the best! It’s cool but sometimes the sisters will show up wearing the same outfit, without any advanced knowledge!
A friend of mine that had twins said that the first year was the hardest and then they kept each other entertained. Of course, she said the co-operated when getting in trouble 😉 .
Get some rest and good luck at the doctor’s.

82. @ Bryan M. White – No, haven’t seen her yet. There are other feral colonies in the neighborhood, so I’m hoping she’s with one of them, or – maybe – just coming around when I haven’t seen her. She is shy. We did dig out the regular kitty hiding places around our place and the neighbors’- so we’ve done all we can do. I do hope she’s okay, though.

RE: Driving in snow. I went to the office today – STUPID ME!!!! It’s like driving on the moon – ruts and ‘potholes’ in the packed snow and slippy slush and patches of ice – and a total MESS! Then I had this chick in a little silver car tailgating me, flailing her arms and screaming at me because I was driving too slow, so…

Yeah, I flipped her the bird. 😳 I’ve never done that before, but – ya know – I had enough stress worrying about what’s in front of me, I didn’t need that arsehole pushing me from behind. Oh, and birdwatchers are actually parking in THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET to look at birds and snap pictures. 🙄 Only one car can get through most of the side streets, and these morons are stopping right in the middle of the lane, and taking pictures. Yeah, we’re in the Atlantic Flyway and we have lots of pretty birds. And yeah, they are extra pretty in the snow. But, ya know, use some common sense! ARRRRGGGHHH!

Now I have to drive home, and I’m dreading it. 😛

We’re supposed to get quite a bit of wintery mix/rain – then temps drop and it’ll all freeze change over to snow. I’m not going out for the rest of the month. 😛

das

83. Coucou Joseph!

Bisou!

84. @PBMom

How was the school meeting? I was thinking of you and praying for a good outcome.

85. So I stayed up extra late last night because I started reading a one-shot Manga on the Internet. Since you’re into Anime, Joe, I thought you might like it:

Link

It’s an incredible piece of Science Fiction, and has made my imagination spin with story ideas and concepts. It’s 41 pages long, so I don’t think it will take too much time, especially since you read so fast anyway. Enjoy!

@ Narelle: Ha! I wish! 😀

@ Shirt’n’Tie: My time has passed, good buddy; it’s now the younger generation’s turn to win these contests. May they win them well. *Walks away dramatically*

Ah, who am I kidding. I’ll win the next one. 😉

86. @Tammy Dixon – I think the more likely scenario is a miscalculated due date. I already knew I was showing too early, then I got that “Hmm …” and an early ultrasound scheduled at my first pre-natal visit. The early U/S will either adjust the due date or … uh, not.

87. @Das. and I thought they only did stupid crap like that in Cornwall. Seems stupidity is universal after all. I could probably give lessons in road rage I get so irate when common sense is in such short supply that more than once I’ve taken the opportunity to actually TELL these arseholes exactly what I think of their driving “skills” it is SO therapeutic. I particularly remember driving home early one morning after picking number one son up from night shift and being tailgated and I mean tailgated, the guy was about an inch from my rear end and I don’t pootle 🙂 Anyways I stopped at a junction and we both got out of the car and went back and frightened the crap outta the moron. needless to say he hung well back the rest of the way and I felt GREAT!!!

90. Tammy – Our temperature range would be from -3 degrees C (26F) up to 48 degrees C (118F).
Melbourne is known for being able to give you four seasons in one day – great, now I have that song stuck in my head by Crowded House.
I’m with you, I. don’t. do. cold.
I shiver. My teeth chatter. Facial expression is limited to eyebrows. I can’t function. And I get really, really cranky.
Heat extremes I can do so long as I’m near a body of water or at least have water. And preferably no bushfires heading in our direction. That elevates the blood pressure a little.

91. Nor’easter #2 Update:

Just got an automated call from the police, informing us of probably power outages and shelter locations, and to stock up on water and batteries, etc. (they forgot toilet paper on their list! ). THIS has never happened before. They still don’t have power to everyone from the last storm – a friend of mine who lives a couple miles from me was just on the Philly news: A tree is down on their street and they can’t move it because it’s massive, and tangled in power lines. The electric company is trying to get power restored to the barrier islands, so these folks have to wait.

Why the ‘panic’? Because, even though we are supposed to get mostly rain/ice instead of snow, we are also supposed to get 50+ mph winds, with hurricane force winds just off the coast. 😕 And our trees are still clogged with snow and ice, lots of weak trees and branches. And all this snow (still nearly 2 ft deep) will keep the rain water from draining, and then it’s supposed to get cold – which means everything will freeze…and…ugh…I AM finally ready for spring! This is gonna be a real mess… 😛

@ Bryan M. White – Little girl kitty showed up!! 😀 I’m wondering if she was trapped under one of the sheds Mr. Das and I cleared this morning. She was in the kitty shelter, and ate like a little piggy! I feel a lot better now.

Now…let’s hope we all survive what is yet to come. 😛

92. Arrgh…that was supposed to be ‘probable’…stupid ‘typing faster than I think’ thingy going on there…

das

93. Das: prayers going out for all of you on the coast! I’m glad you kitty came back, one less thing for you to fret over. I hope your power stays on!

Narelle: that is a wide temp range in Australia. I live close to Memphis, TN (home of Elvis). In the winter it can be 70F one day and snowing the next. It usually stays above freezing but we may get one ice storm during the winter season.
In the summer it’s hot and steamy (95-105F). It’s a constant heat though, you wake up sweaty and stay that way all day long. I can handle the heat much better than this cold. My fingers/toes go numb first, then my lips and then….. I usually go inside 😀 .

DP: sounds like wishful thinking to me 😉 . Sending prayers your way for good news at drs.

94. Why does everyone like Riley and I find that character creepy? I’m going on record to say I don’t trust him.

Cheers, Chev

95. Just putting it out there, you guys in the writers room should just steal a camera and make the atlantis and 3rd sg1 flick with like your sony? video camera. hahaha na serious just go to like all the actors hosues and get them to say lines in to the camera and lol reuse old walking through village and hive ship footage. No one will notice the difference… honest.

96. @Narelle and Chev7

How about “Fall at your Feet” – its a goodie – so romantic……:)

Cheers, kiwiclare

97. @DP

I hope you come back to check this thread…

Nomi and I had been hoping for her to get pregnant, so there wasn’t that much of a wait. We were keeping track and expecting it to happen at some point. But we do have a funny story about finding out that she was having twins. Nomi’s numbers were high, which usually implies twins, but the tech-in-training at the ultrasound where they look for the heartbeat was doubtful. She pointed to the tiny flicker on the screen and said, “There’s the heartbeat.”

To which I replied, “If that’s the heartbeat, then what’s this over here?” and pointed to another flicker.

“Huh,” she said and went to get the doctor, whose first words to us when she walked in were, “Congratulations, it’s twins.”

98. @Michael A. Burstein – Thanks for the reply. That’s impressive to beat an ultrasound tech at their own game.
