Hey, look at who was on set the other day...

STILL not Friday?! You’ve got to be kidding me!

My VFX spotting session for Broken Ties was moved to the afternoon. It went swimmingly – with the exception of the sword-drawing insert I’m going to need re-shot. They’ll be shooting the Sheppard-McKay cafeteria scene on Tuesday and, if all goes well, I hope to lock this episode some time before it actually airs.

We watched the producer’s cut of The Daedalus Variations. Alan did a great job on it. To be honest, I was worried about this script at the outline stage but it’s turning out to be a great, fast-moving episode.

Casting continues for Tracker. Alan’s third story awaits a spin session. And I have my Whispers production meeting

I, uh, can’t help but notice fans up in arms over the lack of Sheppard spoilers. They complain that all they’ve heard concerning season 5 is talk of Ronon and McKay. Well, there’s a good reason for that. Your source of information for season 5, so far, have been David Hewlett and myself. David, of course, updates you on what he has been working on – and his work usually involves the character of Rodney McKay. I, on the other hand, have been focusing on the episodes I have written/produced: Broken Ties and Whispers. As a result, there has been an clear imbalance  in the teaser department.  But until any of the other actors or producers start blogging, I’m afraid that’s the way it’s going to be. I will occasionally mention what everyone else is up to (my mention of Alan’s work on Daedalus Variations in today’s entry, for instance) but, for the most part, I’ll continue to offer insight into what I happen to be working on.

Finally, in response to those complaining about an uneven balance in the types of stories being told this year – like last year, everyone will be getting an episode. The reason I haven’t discussed the Sheppard story is because, unlike Ronon, McKay, and Teyla, his story falls in the back half of the season. Ronon has Broken Ties. Teyla has The Queen. McKay has The Shrine. And Sheppard will have CSI: Atlantis (and possibly Hexed if we can make it work). Otherwise, the front half offers up some great team-episodes as well as episodes which go a long way toward cementing the bonds of friendship between our various players (Teyla and McKay in Search and Rescue, Ronon and Sheppard in Search and Rescue, Ronon and the rest of the team – but Sheppard in particular – in Broken Ties, McKay and the rest of the team – but Sheppard in particular – in The Shrine, Ronon and McKay in Tracker are a few that immediately come to mind).

Well, it’s well past 5:00 p.m. and very close to my bedtime since I have to be in early for tomorrow’s 6:00 a.m. fog test. Plenty of unfathomable pics to follow.

No mailbag today but, here, have a pic.

  1. Have a good nights rest to help you prepare for tomorrow. Thanks for the insight into any episodes, makes me feel connected a bit. And I think by the time you read this it will br Friday, Yeah!!!!!

  2. Thanks for getting up sooooo early to make the fog perfect! Also thanks for any tidbits you share, you could be mean and keep us in the dark until the shows actually air months from now. I hate waiting! Thanks for everything. How are the dogs?

  3. Sorry I won’t be seeing you guys here at NYCC this year. I’ve got an early call for tomorrow as well too. I’ll be trolling the show floor with a camera crew. I got stuck with the unlucky job of holding the boom mic.

  4. I hear ya. Friday can’t come fast enough. Oh wait, it’s already Friday here. I guess what I really mean is Friday can’t be OVER fast enough.. cos then it’ll be the weekend and I can spend my day watching new Doctor Who instead of phoning Belgians. Not that I’ve anything against Belgians. At least they make good chocolate.

Hope your early morning is not too horrendous – just think.. when you’re on set at 6am for the fog test, the working day will be nearly over for me. A comforting thought, I’m sure you’ll agree. 😀

  5. Oh, CSI was my favorite show until I stumbled across Stargate last December–I’m REALLY, REALLY excited to hear that episode title! Even if it’s nothing like CSI, just the thought…

Thank you so much for the spoilers you do give us–I much prefer hearing from you and David about what you know is going on than for you to make educated guesses or tell someone else’s story just for the sake of perceived fairness. Let me just tell you how excited I am to hear about the team/friendship interplay you’ve mentioned in this post!

Question: you mentioned The Shrine being an episode where McKay loses his memory, and given indications that Sheppard and Jeannie will both figure prominently in the storyline–dare I hope there will be some sort of evaluation scene where, once he’s lost a lot of his memories, McKay speculates on the dynamics of his friendship with Sheppard and his relationship with his sister? It’d be great to see him jump to conclusions that are a bit off, and then see the payoff of that once he’s returned to normal.

Again, thanks for the post, I am so very excited!

    ~Darsy

ps. I’ve just found out I’m pregnant! Do you have any favorite names of characters in the Stargate universe that you might suggest as possibilities? We won’t know the gender for a while yet, but it never hurts to start planning early! 😉

  6. Goodnight to you
And Happy Early fog day to you tommorow!

Make a fog tree and have fog songs.

  7. Joe…tomorrow is ACTUALLY FRIDAY!!!!! YEAH!!! You made it! When do we get to see the menu for your chocolate soiree? Just seeing the list of names had my mouth watering. What beverage is used to cleanse the palate? 🙂 I just started reading the Empire of Ice Cream (I know, I’m behind) and I love it!

  8. *waves*

And wait for it, it’s a doozy cos it’s been sooo long.

I was building up momento with every line I read of your blog tonight. 😀

Thank you Mr M, i’m a happy camper again, and I’m sure I won’t be the only one.. See, it really doesn’t take much… Besides, I’m kinda shallow like that. 😛 Now go bug Joe tomorrow to get his blog going.

I luff the sound of ‘Hexed’ makes me all warm and fuzzy. So will more chocolates help make the ep work? 😉 Did I mention how shallow I was? 😛

Have a good day tomorrow looking forward to the pics. 😀

    *squooshy hugs*

  9. CSI: Atlantis. Ha ha! That’s quite clever.

Any idea on when Season 5 will begin airing?

  10. All sounds good-I’m a big Sheppard fan. TGIF in about 3 1/2 hours–yea weekends!

  11. chevron7 said: “I must say The English Patient is a film I will never ever see. When that movie came out everyone was running around saying to me “You’ve gotta see The English Patient” (seriously my life mirrors a Seinfeld episode sometimes). Well I refused to see it and to this day I still haven’t watched it. Also on this list of “never to be watched” is The Piano and Green Card.”

LOL! For me, a movie that I will never watch is “Titanic”. Too much hype, too much Leonardo DiCaprio. Nnnoooooo thanks.

  12. CSI: Atlantis = “A corpse is discovered and John plays detective.”
Hexed = “While Sheppard battles some really bad luck.”

There’s my two Shep-eps! Hope they work out great, LOVE team eps as well so looking forward to another super Shep season. Thanks for ALL the tidbits. AND pix.

  13. Sweet Jesus.

You know, not to complain (because I never do that), but as the guy who updates all the episode threads on Gateworld when you update your blog, today was certainly a manic one. I think I had to update something like…9 threads, and start a new one, just because you touched base on so many episodes.

Oh who am I kidding, I love it. It gets the heart pumpin’, so thanks!

It’s odd, but I knew you were going to throw the Shep fans a bone today. I just KNEW, you know? Very odd indeed. I will now use my powers to predict what’s going to be showcased tomorrow: pictures from the fog test, a WOOHOOO that tomorrow is ACTUALLY Friday, and…a food review, just because.

    Let’s see if I’m right!

  14. It’s 2am here!
CSI: Atlantis… you know, I can’t decide whether you’re kidding about that or not.

  15. Thank you for adressing all of the complaints/concerns about the stories being unbalanced for Season 5. I was growing weary of reading all of the posts/comments about how everyone else in the cast gets all of the meaty stories except Shep—some posts have been especially nasty toward the other characters—especially McKay/Hewlett and Keller/Staite. I’ve read quite a few posts/comments saying that JoeF is unhappy with the way things have been progressing and that he’s unhappy with how many stories that Martin Gero writes for McKay. However, I have just read a wonderful article from which Lily posted yesterday:“The show has changed pretty dramatically from where we started to where we are now – for the better.“ This is a direct quote from Joe Flanigan. He sounds quite happy to me. In fact, he goes on to say that he wished there would be MORE character-centric episodes. He actually PREFERS them to team episodes. Yet, his ‘fans’ continue to misquote him here (and on GW). I find this very disrespectful to JoeF as well as the other actors. Thankfully, in articles such as the one quoted above, and the actors’ various blogs (DavidN, Jewel, DavidH and yours),we get to hear about how much the cast actually enjoys working together and how much respect and admiration they have for one another. So thank you for clearing all of that up Joe! This is just my 2cents of course, so I figured I’d throw it out there since everyone else was throwing in theirs. Thanks for letting me vent something that’s been bugging me for a few weeks.

  16. episodes which go a long way toward cementing the bonds of friendship between our various players . . . . Ronon and McKay in Tracker . .

Ah yes, bonding between Ronon and McKay when they have the three-way with Keller.

    Sorry. I’m skipping that one.

  17. Congradulations you finally made it to Friday!

Thanks so much for the updates! I do have to wonder though, with work, your blog AND the BOTM, do you ever sleep?

  18. Good to hear about more team-building eps. I’m especially looking forward to more McKay and Ronon, because that’s just a fun dynamic, and McKay and Teyla, because we don’t often see them alone together, without Shep and Ronon. Although, really, team/friendship stuff, no matter what characters are concerned, are a large part of why I love this show so much.

  19. Thanks for the pic. I love Fran.

And thanks for the update. A huge and heartfelt thank you. Honestly. I’ve adored the show since Rising. I’m a huge Joe Flanigan fan and my top fave character is and will always be Shep. But I love all the other characters as well (especially Ronon, Rodney and Teyla, who all come in a second place after John). I certainly look forward to development for all the characters and not just John.

Thanks again for this update. You made my day.

Now back to begging for Joe Flanigan pics. Since you’ll be on set for Whispers… it wouldn’t be too much trouble to get JF in a video or pic, right? *puppy eyes*

PS: maybe you can convince some of your co-workers to start blogging, especially those writing Shep eppies 😀

  20. I can’t help but realize that no story information has been released on ‘The Seed’… does this episode hold a big secret the production staff is waiting to reveal?

I LOVE the obvious attention that will be given to Ronon’s character. I’m sure many will agree, a multiple episode focus on him is well overdue.

  21. darsynia Said:

    Congratulations!!

Peter’s a nice name. 😉 Oh, and Ronon’s good for both girls AND boys, apparently. 😀

  22. Thanks Joe, for addressing the Sheppard ‘issue’. I haven’t been reading comments so I don’t know what’s been said, but I had been wondering why you hadn’t mentioned Joe or Sheppard much lately. I’ll admit the idea of more Sheppard makes me happy, but I’m looking forward to those team episodes too. It’s often those little relationship moments that make an ep for me.

Cheer up! It’s got to be Friday somewhere.

  23. Thank you sooooooooooooooooo much for filling us in.
You be sure to EnJoy your weekend, but first yes you must endure FRIDAY. Look at it this way you could have a bad nightmare and wake up to a MONDAY morning.

  24. Zzzzzzzzzz…..

    *sits straight up*

    Hi Joe!

Hope your fog meeting goes well tomorrow! It’s almost Friday! And due to the New Orleans Hornets making the playoffs, that means its less than 48 hrs til I see RUSH in Houston! (happy dance)

I was going to say something like “thanks for throwing us a Shep bone,” but that sounded very, very wrong, so instead I’ll say, “Thanks for the info on Shep.” 🙂

Plus, David used the words “lithe glistening sea-panthers” to describe Shep in an S5 ep, so I’m already having Happy Shep Dreams.

And I’m not one who wants Shep exclusively to the detriment of other characters. I watch the show for all of the characters. I just thunk Shep. 🙂

*Worn out, eddy fell back to sleep, awaiting a day without fan bitching. She would sleep a very, very long time.*

  25. CSI: Atlantis! Hahahaha. Sounds great. Hexed on the other hand.. yowza. Poor Sheppard, always getting banged up. Why are all the Season 5 titles creeping me out??

And yay! Glad to hear there’s more Sheppard and Ronon scenes! I always imagined since Sheppard was buried under all those rocks in The Last Man, that Ronon would bust out like The Hulk and sling him over his shoulder, carrying him to safety. I mean, sure, Sheppard parts may be smeared all over the place, but it’s the thought that counts right?? If all else fails, his hair is sure to be perfect.

  26. And across a weary world a great sigh of relief was heard…squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  27. I don’t often read your blog anymore mostly because I forget to or I just am bloody busy (plus it tends to be morning and I’m at work in Australia when you update).

I do enjoy reading it ocassionally as it’s insightful into the development process of the show. I also like your food blogging and your book club comments.

Say, have you ever read Mike Resnick? Or did I somehow miss it when you mentioned him? He’s another scifi author whom I adore.

RE: the comments about not enough Sheppard mention… when did that happen??? Perhaps you should suggest to the those Sheppard fans that they should go over to David Hewlett, Rachael Luttrell and David Nykl’s blogs to complain… and protest that these actors stop talking about themselves and only talk about John Sheppard!

Personally I think sometimes a bit of mystery is good for the plot. We don’t want to know everything or there wouldn’t be a point to watching it… unexpected storylines is what makes it exciting!

Have a nice day – I hope it’s better weather at your end than here in Sydney 🙂

  28. Things sound…busy. Busy is good. I hope the Sheppard fans are pleased with the potential of two episodes in the later season, as well as the good Colonel in team action. I couldn’t imagine the writers would ignore him, given the success of episodes like Common Ground and Outcast. Atlantis strikes me as an ensemble cast, but its fun to watch the individual actors get to stretch a little (or a lot). The teasers are promising that season five will be the best yet, and so far crew and cast have managed to live up to the promises made. Thanks for another glimpse into the background mania that makes for our favorite show.

  29. I have the day off tomorrow! I’m planning on sleeping until about 10:00 and then calling in to work to tell everyone in the office that I just got out of bed. Hey, no point in having the day off if you can’t rub it in, right?

  30. So it looks like I may be on my own here, but I’m really starting to like Keller, especially after watching season 4 episodes a second time. Thanks for bumping her up to a regular character! Can you let us know what episodes she’ll be a prominent character in or if any episodes will be Keller focused? Any spoilers about her character besides potential romantic involvement? And (please excuse the multiple questions here) regarding an entry you posted some time back, what kind of prosthetics are we talking about?

  31. I am eagerly awaiting Season Five, especially after your promises to cement the bonds of friendship among the characters. I have a feeling it will be the best season thus far. Have no doubt that all your hard work will be much appreciated. 🙂

  32. Thank you for the explanation r.e. lack of Sheppard. I’ve really enjoyed the spoilers about the teamy stuff, and about Ronon and Teyla individually, and Rodney, but (and I thought it was just me; apparently I skim way too lightly over your comments page) I have been a bit bummed at the lack of news about Sheppard, and assumed it meant the character wouldn’t be getting much attention in season 5. But obviously it makes sense that if you and the people you seem to be closest to in the writing department aren’t working the Sheppard-centric eps, you won’t be writing about them. I mean, duh; but on the other hand, it’s not the sort of thing a person on the outside can assume, necessarily. So thanks for the clarification.

One thing I’ve wondered – Rodney has gotten some really great character episodes every year, in which the focus is almost purely on who he is, what makes him tick, how he feels about things, back story, that sort of thing. It sounds like The Shrine will be another one of those. Will Sheppard ever get an episode like that? Epiphany in season 2, Common Ground in season 3, and Outcast last season were *almost* that sort of episode for Sheppard; but they all ended up sort of side-swiping the characterization elements and focusing more on the action/mystery elements. Naturally Sheppard isn’t as…talkative as Rodney, and thus a lot less likely to unload with paragraphs and paragraphs worth of exposition about how he feels about something…but there could be some way to dig a little deeper into Sheppard, possibly? Heck, this is sci fi, Sheppard doesn’t even have to offer up the information on his own, some crazy alien gizmo could do it for him. Like, something along the lines of what it sounds like will happen to Rodney in The Shrine. Or…something?

I don’t know. But, Joe Flanigan does such a great job with the character beats he gets, and it would be so great to see what he could do with a whole character episode…

  33. drldeboer Said: btw, my companion is with ya on Wraith support. Since the end of s1 he’s had lettered across the back of his pickup window “In memory of Steve the Wraith” but he refuses to call Todd “Todd” because that’s my ex’s name… he calls him “Ace” instead, for obvious reasons. Loves that character.

He’s got good taste in Wraith! 😀

I showed a friend a few clips from SGA (she’s never seen it), and now she wants to watch all the available seasons, start to finish. Since I only showed her Wraithcentric moments, I’m thinking I might have won over yet another Wraith worshipper…

hee! (I got my sister hooked, too…but she’s hot for Ronon. Typical. 🙄 )

Yeah – about Todd’s name. 🙄 Sad thing is – it’s starting to grow on me… 😛 I would just LOVE to see his reaction when he hears his name for the first time!! 😆 “Effective, yes. Admittedly creative. But the truth is, my name is Sue.” (Shep would get the reference, I’m sure… 😉 )

    das

  34. Oooh, CSI: Atlantis sounds pretty intriguing. I used to like that the original show quite a bit, but then I started to lose interest in it. I’d love to see a Stargate twist on it though. 🙂

  35. Is there anyway that you (or anyone) else can get Sheppard/Joe F. to take his shirt off this season? Even better, is there anyway you can get someone to rip it off? I can’t speak for everyone here, but a slip of that kind of spoiler and refusing to say which episode (or part of the season) this would occur would keep all the Sheppard fanatics (I include myself in that group)completely distracted. Imagine! Eyes glued to every episode wondering if this was the one…

If you can’t promise that, I suppose we’d have to settle for a shirtless Lorne. You know…”settle” isn’t really the appropriate word. I believe Sheppard fans and Lorne fans are greatly linked with many people in “both camps”.

  36. Joe,

Thank you for the insight regarding the episodes. My favorite episodes are always the ones that develop the relationships between the characters. I know that it is a bit early to ask, since we don’t know who survives Search and Rescue, but, if he survives, could you all work in a side story (notice, I’m not asking for it to the focus of any entire episode) that further develops the character of Evan Lorne? And maybe something that further develops Radek Zelenka? Just a small suggestion from someone who loves all the characters. (Though I must be honest that Jennifer Keller has had to grow on me, devotee to Carson Beckett that I am.)

A question that is completely off-topic but seems to be close to your heart: Have you ever had DeBrand Chocolates? I have just learned that their headquarters are located in my hometown – which I will be visiting in June for the first time in seven year.

Thanks for the pic of FRAN. I am looking forward to tomorrow’s fog pics.

    TGIF!!

    First of all, CONGRATULATIONS!

If it’s a boy, you could pay homage to both Stargate shows by naming him “John” but calling him “Jack”. And, apparently, Meredith works for both sexes…lol…just like Ronon.

    Good luck!

  40. Hey, Joe, my husband brought home this new chocolate variety (new for us anyway). It’s Lindt’s Cherry & Chili, dark chocolate (70%) bar with chocolate mousse and cherry & chili fillings. Just when you’re in heaven with the chocolate and cherry swirling around in your mouth, the subtle chili (it’s actually an extract) kicks in and POW! And because it’s dark chocolate, it’s actually healthy for you – well, at least that’s what I keep telling myself.

I definitely recommend it for the chocolate lovers out there.

  41. Thank you for talking about Sheppard. I’m a huge Joe Flanigan fan. And while I enjoy team episodes a lot (and want more, more, more of them), episodes I always love seeing are Sheppard being both smart and capable. I cheered when Sheppard FIXED the chair in Travelers. YES!

Looking forward to The Shrine. Will we finally get Mckay admitting how close a friend Sheppard is? Please?

And what’s up with Tracker – uhm.. why isn’t the team there? I could see them, if they were tracking or searching for Teyla and Sheppard – but it’s not them, it’s Keller? So, where’s Sheppard?

  42. (go to bed, Joe…you gotta get up early, ‘member? 😉 )

    @ darsynia – Todd’s a nice name… 😈

    das

  43. Ha! I was right in thinking that was Fran in those other pics…oooo, now I’m very excited to see how she comes back to the Atlantis members.

Good news, Joe! I finally found a bookstore with The Blade Itself. Which of course means I must now lay aside the other books I was reading in order to finish it and my academic work on time, but I look forward to it and Mr. Abercrombie’s visit.

Now, I just have to ask, mainly because my own interest is piqued due to my favorite team being in the playoffs, despite the fact that I can’t get hockey where I’m currently at (and it looks like they’ll lose game five tonight). It seems the SGA crew gets into football and college basketball, but only Carl is a hockey fan? Being up in Canada, it’s surprising to me. Does Carl have a favorite this year?

  44. Hope you will be extra nice to David H tomorrow or a should say today the 18th the big 40 maybe a BIG birthday cake:)

  45. Congratulations Darsynia! About baby names, it would be hard to go wrong with Glaxnor. Checking the Intergalactic Confederation database, it looks like the name works for all sexes on most planets, and you’d have no worries about your kiddo winding up with a handle that’s #1 on the 2008/9 lists of Most Popular Baby Names. (I’ve always really liked the name Jennifer, Jen, Jenny, etc., but life can get confusing when you have a name that’s turned into song lyrics such as “I went to school with twenty-seven Jennifers. . .” My nickname is common, so I know all about that.) Best of all, I don’t think Joe has patented the name yet, so no annual fee for use, or whatever.

“CSI: Atlantis” sounds interesting, regardless of those sticky intellectual-property laws you guys have to work with, and I suppose it would go down better with most fans than “John Sheppard: Criminal Intent” since that obviously can be read two ways. (My POV is that’s the beauty of it, but anyway.) The problem is, no matter how much you all do, it will never be enough, really. *cues music from Twilight Zone*

Good luck with the VFX session; and with all the fog, make sure someone’s got your back, and you don’t go through that one door. . . . .

  46. CSI: Atlantis? Surely that should be NCIS: Atlantis – they are on water after all! *g*

  47. Good luck with the fog, Joe. I hope it ends up being worth the early wake-up call.

@darsynia…Congrats! I hope you have an easy pregnancy. And no matter what you name the little sprout, just make sure you can yell it from the front porch when the streetlights come on without getting tongue tied. 😉

  48. IggyMing, I won tickets to Titanic because I was the last woman in Northern Utah who hadn’t seen the movie. Kate Winslet’s bosom kept it from sucking totally. Let’s see, and the costumes, and the set, and well … did I mention Kate’s bosom? And I’m straight.

  49. Can we give you very vague names for an episode??
I would then like to suggest(if i am allowed.)
Fallen Soldier; an episode that would strongly feature- Ford, Ronon, or Sheppard(Why not all three?)

  50. Oooh, I’m tellin’ ya…the more hints you keep dropping, the more anticipatory I become!! 😀

Okay…so another shot at the mailbag…LOL One: How many people do you generally invite to one of your chocolate shindigs? And Two: How do you handle things if a star wants to do their own stunts? Who makes the final call and how far is that envelope allowed to be pushed? Just curious.

  51. On hearing about the upcoming episodes I can’t wait for the next season to return; it sounds like all kinds of great. Thank god I have this crystal meths addiction to occupy me in the meantime or I really would be a mess.

  52. Shadow Step Said:
CSI: Atlantis? Surely that should be NCIS: Atlantis – they are on water after all! *g*

I agree. Besides, the NCIS team has a MUCH better sense of humor than those stuffy CSI guys (AND they make those great pop culture remarks like the SGA team always does – I LOVE that stuff…)

Joe – quick question – what’s been the most comments you’ve ever had to a single blog entry – and what was the subject?

    Thankies.

    das

  53. People are worried that Sheppard’s not going to get any attention? Of course he’s going to get attention. He’s Shep. He saves the world. He does actiony stuff. He woos women. And so on and so forth. There’s no end to the attention Shep gets.

I’m not complaining. I’m just saying.

  54. Shep Eps = Yay.
    Gotta go.

PS: Cheeky Lil Devil – I admire your positive attitude here, despite all that is going on for you. You always make me smile.

  57. Thank you for the tidbits you’ve finally thrown our way. Took you long enough, but I’m not complaining to finally have had my fears allayed. 🙂

CSI:Atlantis? Hmmm, interesting. I like some of the CSI shows, I pefer NCIS but nothing, naturally compares to Stargate, IMO . Hexed? I hope that one works out because it sounds intriguing. I wonder what the problems with the writing of that one are?

I very much look forward to the cementing of friendships we’ll see in season 5. I love team episodes, but agree some character based one’s are essential for character development, certainly if they’re focused on one or two of them.

McKay and Teyla sounds an interesting combination, as indeed does Ronon and McKay. I’m very fond of Ronon and Sheppard interaction, as indeed I am of Sheppard and McKay’s, so those indeed are something to look forward to. As for the perceived Keller bashing I’ve seen around. I personally don’t dislike her as some do. But I’ve yet to be convinced about her role as CMO. I hope to be shown just how good she is in season 5, because I really do want to like her more. I don’t actually dislike any characters in SGA.

I noticed a poster here said that Shep fans had misquoted Joe F. Let me assure you nobody on the threads I frequent has done that. In fact we’re quite anal about directly quoting things. It’s possible people put different spins on things, but they make it clear it’s their opinion and how they interpret the words.

Thank you again for throwing a bone our way. 🙂

  58. Thank goodness! You have mentioned Sheppard and his Shepisode and maybe Hexed too ( which sounds awesome – I sooooooo hope it happens)

Thank goodness there may be some happiness again in the Sheppard camp *big sigh of relief* 🙂

    SheppyD

  59. Oh! We got our phone call and a great big bunch of roses! Thank you so very, very much. 🙂

  60. Shep News *Happy Dance*
Thank you Mr M you have made my Friday brighter (even if it is a typically miserable & rainy British day).

  61. Cementing the bonds between Ronon and Sheppard works for me. Atlantis has done a great job in other seasons of cementing the bonds between McKay and Sheppard and even McKay and Ronon, and Ronon and Teyla, so a little more Ronon and Sheppard is welcome great news for me.

  62. Happy Friday. Hope you have a good weekend. Thanks for sharing all that you do. 🙂
I was able to get The Blade Itself yesterday. So excited. Can’t wait for next month.

  63. About RCC’s question of movies better than books…

I’m probably the only one on Earth but I hated the Lord of the Rings books, forced myself to finish them only because I wanted to find out who Aragon wound up with (romantic kid that I was) and I never read them again. But I adored the movies.

Legends of The Fall was a better movie than the book, which may have been non-fiction… I just know that it was not much fun to read but I marvelled at how the screenwriter pulled bits and pieces from all over the book to put together a cohesive movie.

And I have to agree with whoever said that Brokeback Mountain was better than Annie Poulx’s short story. Not that her short story wasn’t great and moving, but an under 20 page story with no dialogue could never compete with what we got on screen.

Also, Andy Griffith did a movie called “No Time for Sergeants” which was one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen. It was based on a play and I picked up the play and was surprised at how disappointed I was in the play… it didn’t make me laugh much at all.

  64. PG15 said:

“Ronon’s good for both girls AND boys”

Heh. That’s just what my cousin said when I asked him about kitten names.

I agree, though. Ronon (or Ronin, or Ronan) would be a great name, especially for a girl. I also think Skaara, Tomin, and Vala are cool names.

Oh, yes, and Titanic…that was all the rage when I was in high school. On a school trip, as we walked through Buchart Gardens (sp?), the senior guys saw fit to sing/hum the theme song through the entire tour (which was, oh, two or three hours, as I recall). (P.S. winter: not such a good time to visit the gardens; as someone commented, if we wanted to see that much green, we could have stayed in Oregon).

  65. Thanks for the information.

Season 5 already sounds great for me!

    CSI: Atlantis – wow 🙂

    Question:

Aprés touts des nouvelles têtes féminine dans atlantis avez vous l’intention de mêttre un nouvelle homme ?

    Voila, merci kisou aplus=)

  67. First off congratulations to darsynia on your happy news. 🙂

Well you made me smile today Joe because I’m a sucker for friendship moments:

“McKay and the rest of the team – but Sheppard in particular – in The Shrine”

Although I love all the friendships on the show my heart belongs to Sheppard and McKay. They have an almost sibling like relationship that really rings true for me. So I’m thinking that The Shrine is going to make me cry, isn’t it? Well as long as it ultimately leaves me feeling warm and fuzzy I’ll forgive Brad Wright just this once.

    “Ronon and McKay in Tracker”

I’ve mentioned before how much I love these two together, so I’m delighted that we’re getting lots of interaction between them. And I’ve always had a soft spot for McKay and Teyla moments too, we don’t see enough of those two together so I shall look forward to that as well.

Just a couple of quick book questions while I’m here. I’m behind on what you’ve been reading so sorry if I should know the answer to these.

Anyway, I recall a while ago you read Only Forward by Michael Marshall Smith I was wondering if you ever got around to reading One Of Us – it’s one of those books I always recommend to people and remains a real favourite.

Also I’ve just got done reading Scar Night by Alan Campbell, a thoroughly enjoyable fantasy book with some wonderful characters set in a dark steam punk-ish world. Have you read it?

I’ve been unable to work because of ill health for some time so I’ve been reading a great deal of late. I keep meaning to join in the book club but I’m not terribly intellectual so I’m not sure I’d have anything of substance to say. Though I can at least use it to expand my reading list. So thank you for that.

And please pass on my best wishes to Mr Hewlett on his birthday.

  68. Hey Joe,
Don’t fret, weekend will be soon.

I how ever have a film and tv assignment due on Monday so my teachers are being really wonderful and opening up the computer rooms both days on the weekend so that students can work on their documentaries. So i’ll be having a seven day school week….
And don’t even get me started on the other assignments that are due. Not to mention homework.

But besides all that, I was wondering,
Have you see the TV show from the UK called Life on Mars starring John Simm?
If not then I suggest you do. It is a great show. Only two seasons though with eight episodes each but it’s a great series and the ending is great.

  69. It’s Friday!! Congrats on making it to the actual day.

Maybe you were so anxious for Friday because it’s David Hewlett’s 40th birthday and you’re using the fog to cover up some sort of surprise party? 🙂

Best of luck in finishing up Broken Ties. It’ll happen!

  70. Firstly…WELCOME BACK ANNE TELDY! It was good to see your name a couple of blog entries ago, I hope you’re doing well.

    ——————–

I finally made it – both to Friday (here in Australia) and to commenting about The Keep. It’s a bit unfortunate my order took so long to get to me, but at least it did get here before the week was out. I’ve read through the blog entries, but hopefully all the other readers will forgive me for not reading all the comments, there’s just so many!

Horror has always been something which fascinates me, particularly as a genre. Why would we want to read about horrible, often gruesome, gory, supernatural (a fair bit anyway) events which are beyond our perception of reality? Maybe because they are beyond our perception of reality. Maybe because fear is very captivating when you think about it (that old deer in the headlights thing-turned human in the headlights). And it shows us what we might be capable of in completely different situations.

What really struck me about The Keep is that there wasn’t a protagonist we follow from start to finish. The story starts with Kaempffer, moved to Woermann and continued to introduce new perspectives from there. The story shifted away from Kaempffer and Woermann, or at least they became less sympathetic characters for me, when Mr Cuzo and Magda were introduced to the story, and also Glenn. It seemed to become very much about those three as the story progressed, and less about Woermann and Kaempffer. Which made me wonder why the story started with them.

Was it to introduce the context of the story? Or was it a set up so we’d be more sympathetic to their plights? Or something else? I actually did relate to Kaempffer when he was introduced because Hossbach was so obvious about his contempt towards Kaempffer. Although once he shared his thoughts a bit more I didn’t like him so much. But like Joe and several others have said, Woermann was easy to relate to. And I did feel sorry for him, especially after his death.

Sparrow Hawk brought up a really good point about the similar relationship between Germany and Hitler and Cuza and Molasar, and I think in a way Kaempffer, and particularly Woermann (who doesn’t seem too keen on what Hitler’s doing) represent another aspect – the way they try to move forward because turning back (leaving the keep) will jeopardise them in some other way. Which brings to mind the question – what is the greater evil?

Some highlights…Lutz death was one of the creepiest. The unknown he was trying to enter was scary enough, and then the light dimming out, the shift in perspective to the other officer at just the right time…my eyes were so wide when I read it.

Magda meeting Molasar for the first time was interesting because it touched on the theory about vampires being a very sensual creature. The going for the throat, the innocent victim, all that kind of thing. Wilson touches on it very well, before breaking it apart and turning it into something else entirely. I liked that, it kept me guessing and added more suspense to the story.

Woermann’s after-death experience reminded me firstly of a Stephen King novella called Autopsy Room Four, and also of a short film from the Alfred Hitchcock Presents series. The difference was Woermann was actually dead.

The other thing about Woermann and his after-death actions which interested me was when he strangled Kaempffer. Was he actually strangling him, or was Molasar making him? The smile Kaempffer sees suggests he was doing it, but I didn’t think Woermann was that full of hate. It made me wonder how much of Woermann was left, and whether or not Molasar had only left enough for him to be aware of what he was doing, and enjoy it.

I wasn’t really a fan of the love story in this, but I think it added a different element to the story. And I liked that Glenn survived at the end. It suggested that just enough of his human nature had survived for the Light to leave him be as a human again after so long.

That’s about all I can think of for now. A good read, and I’ll be interested to see what F. Paul Wilson has to say about it and everyone else’s comments.

On Robert C. Cooper’s question about films better than the source material… I think it depends on how you approach them in some ways. Obviously there are differences in the medium being used, so a “good” adaptation doesn’t always mean it follows the source to the word (or description etc). I only say this because I think Stephen King’s 1408 and the film version are equally good. Sure, there are quite a few differences, but they’re both true to the medium they’re working in. Where the novella describes the psychological elements through Mike Enslin’s thoughts, the film shows it through physical changes, visual effects and sound. I’m always sceptical of Stephen King adaptations, but that was one I really really enjoyed. I can’t think of any others…I know a few people who say they liked the Lord of the Rings films better than the books, but while I liked the films, I like the books better because there is so much more in them.

My question in relation to this topic is: what of the original Beowulf and the most recent film? Has anyone read and seen both, and if so, what are their thoughts?

  71. Hi Joe!

First time poster 🙂 but I’ve been reading for a while.

I’m a student studying Film and Television Production and was wondering what difference it has made to your job shooting in HD and how long did it take for you and the production crew to adapt?

For SGA are there any John and Teyla scenes to look forward to in season 5? And a BIG thank you for the Shep info, loving the idea of CSI: Atlantis. 😀

    Cazz x

  72. Friday=April 18th
April 18th= My Birthday, and (according to Wikipedia, that font of all knowledge)David Hewlett and David Tennant(Dr Who).
So all in all a great day 😀
To make it extra special how about some news about Major Lorne, how much will we be seeing of him this year?

  73. Hi Joe! Thanks for posting some info about Shep. CSI Atlantis sounds really fascinating. And Hexed, is that the extreme Shep whump episode that may happen if you can move ahead with the idea? Sure hope you can move ahead as it sounds intriguing. I wonder who would want to put a curse or spell on our hero.
The rest of S5 seems to be shaping up nicely. Looking forward to it and I can’t wait for it to begin.

  74. When is Ark of Truth released in Australia? No idea I’m afraid.

If / when I next get to a store I’ll ask.

  75. WOO HOO!! It’s FINALLY Friday!

And that means it’s David’s birthday! HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVID! 😀

So now everyone can leave Joe alone about the Sheppy stuff, right? I think Joe’s hinting there will be some Shep stuff in our future. (YAY!)

By the way, to the Princess Bride book lovers, I’m probably going to order a copy for the home library. It’s good to know many of you recommend the book. I’m relieved to know the movie did the story justice.

  76. Happy Friday!!!!
Let us know how the fog test went 🙂
And just so you know, you weren’t the only one getting up obscenely early for a friday… I had to get up at 6:30 to schedule my classes for next semester!!!!

  77. There’s a well known saying in the Internet world to “ignore the …..”. Usually I would, but I feel as a John Sheppard/Joe Flanigan/Stargate Atlantis fan I need to respond to joanieloveschachi’s comment and clear things up.

    joanieloveschachi said:
I was growing weary of reading all of the posts/comments about how everyone else in the cast gets all of the meaty stories except Shep—some posts have been especially nasty toward the other characters—especially McKay/Hewlett and Keller/Staite.

Where? Got a quote? I read the comments and I haven’t seen any nasty comments from the Shep fans regarding McKay/Hewlett or Keller/Staite. Some were a bit sarcastic, but they weren’t nasty. Some of the comments from the past couple of days that fans have made include:

“I read the spoilers for “The Shrine” another emotional, meaty, roller coaster episode for Rodney. You know I love the team, love McKay. But for some reason I’ve become a little biter that he always gets the high intensity, tear-jerker episodes.” (kristen)

    and

“To keep hearing wonderful things about episodes for just about every other character (Oh GOd! McKay gets ANOTHER tear jerker, DH gets ANOTHER chance to flex his acting muscles) – and I’m not saying some characters don’t deserve wonderful things, they most certainly do, ALL the team do – but to hear nothing about my favourite, who’s also supposedly the leading man on the show… well, it is sort of LIKE having your favourite dessert taken off the menu of your favourite restaurant, isn’t it? ” (Linzi)

These aren’t nasty at all to the other characters and actors. They just show the author’s disappointment or frustration.

    joanloveschachi also writes:
“I’ve read quite a few posts/comments saying that JoeF is unhappy with the way things have been progressing and that he’s unhappy with how many stories that Martin Gero writes for McKay.”

Again, we seem to be missing a quote here. I don’t remember reading a comment about Joe F and Martin Gero on the blog so I looked back at the comments this week. Surprise surprise, I didn’t find anything. Do I have to look further back?

    joanieloveschachi writes:
However, I have just read a wonderful article from which Lily posted yesterday: “The show has changed pretty dramatically from where we started to where we are now – for the better.“ This is a direct quote from Joe Flanigan.

Finally we have a quote. Yet I can’t find anywhere on this blog where Sheppard/Flanigan fans have said he’s not happy with the show’s changes. Again, can you point out the quote to me?

I thinks its joanieloveschachi that is being disrespectful to the John Sheppard/Joe Flanigan fans, by making sweeping statements without backing it up. Also there’s no need to airquote us, we are real fans.

    Cheers, chev

  78. CSI: Atlantis… sounds like you’re onto something… we really need more CSI shows… have you considered pitching it to other networks… though I spose since you’re so busy with SGA you won’t have time… too bad, cos that was a really great idea… maybe in a couple of years then… yeah, that’ll work… I look forward to watching it!

Wahoo.. David and David’s birthdays today! please tell you’re local version we’re all wishing him a happy one.

Don’t know what was being said about Stargate Ark of Truth being released in Australia, but it has been… just this week… I was so happy to see lots of signs up in the stores with he movie and all the seasons as well… Stargate barely ever seems to get any recognition over here (well in my little town)… but my version came in the mail… in a pretty little collector’s tin… it’s very shiny!

  79. OK, now I’ve got that off my chest. Thanks Joe for explaining the situation regarding Sheppard in Season 5. I do understand that this is your personal blog to talk about things that are going on in your life, of which Stargate is one part. I appreciate the time you devote to it and us. Although I must say that your blog is different than David Hewlett or David Nykl’s blogs. You run the show and go to production meetings etc and generally know what everyone else is doing. Therein lies my assumption that you might talk about episodes that you aren’t writing. Of course one should never assume 🙂 .

CSI: Atlantis. Interesting concept. I was only thinking the other week – “I wonder what they would do if someone turns up dead (unnaturally) on Atlantis? Would they have to investigate on the base or would they call in someone from the Air Force back on Earth?”

Crossing my fingers for Hexed. I really hope you get to “make it work” (how cool is Tim Gunn? Where’s Andre? 😀 ).

I hope your fog test went well. What is exactly involved in a fog test? Do you do a test film to see how realistic it looks? Is it just a fog machine? Enquiring minds and all.

Thanks heaps Joe. Have a great weekend!

    Cheers, Chev

  80. Joe …Teyla and McKay in Search and Rescue, Ronon and Sheppard in Search and Rescue, Ronon and the rest of the team – but Sheppard in particular – in Broken Ties, McKay and the rest of the team – but Sheppard in particular – in The Shrine, Ronon and McKay in Tracker are a few that immediately come to mind…

Yay to all of that!! Love that we get to see interactions between various team members – hurray for some Teyla and Rodney and some Ronon and Rodney particularly!! Though I also love the other interactions you’ve mentioned too. More friendship, more teaminess and lots of character development…me will be a happy fangirl!

Really looking forward to the season!

darsynia Congratulations! That’s great news! I was going to quote Ronon about his name but I see others have beaten me to it! Hope it all goes well, whatever name you choose.

    Leesa Perrie

  81. Apologies as this is likely a stupid question, but is “CSI: Atlantis” (and, for that matter, “Hexed”) the title of the episode, or just a quick description?

  82. So Teyla gets to bond with Rodney and she’s got an ep to herself….But apart from that i guess she’ll be wallpaper again next season, after S4 i really have lost all hope of Teyla ever developing or getting much to do apart from an episode or two…I guess she’ll always be in the background! 🙁

  83. Joe,

Many thanks for the news about Sheppard. They don’t call us fan(atic)s for nothing! Just think if you had had to go almost a month without chocolate! That’s what is was like for us.

  84. Thanks for the Sheppard info Joe. Much appreciated. I’ve cheered up now!

Hope you manage to make ‘Hexed’ work. Love the title, love the idea of Shep having bad luck and all the whump. Yep…it could quite possibly become my most favouritest episode EVER!!

If the Whumping Advisory Committee ( also known as WAC!:) ) can assist in any way in getting this project moving forward, please don’t hesitate to contact us at GW Shep Whump. We’re available 24/7!! 🙂

  85. Shawna, I worked in an office where the senior secretary played the Titanic soundtrack on continuous repeat for the entire workday including lunch break. ARGHHHHHH!!!!

My heart will go .. Whack! Thud! crunch crunch Smash! Pow! No officer, I didn’t see the ninjas who broke in and swiped her PC. I wish.

  86. Dear Joe,

I wish you a restful weekend, I just finished my exams here at Mcgill and now off to Summer break. I was wondering sir, do you have any news on the renewal of Atlantis for a sixth season? I was also wondering if you will introduce a new design for an earth starship to replace the Daedalus class type in season 5?

    Take care of yourself

  87. @ Chev ~ Can’t speak for Joaniloveschachi, but Speaking for myself, my own post from Wens was meant to offer some perspective to Sheppard fans that were concerned over the lack of Sheppard news, particulalry in in regards to the To keep hearing wonderful things about episodes for just about every other character (Oh GOd! McKay gets ANOTHER tear jerker, DH gets ANOTHER chance to flex his acting muscles) – and I’m not saying some characters don’t deserve wonderful things, they most certainly do, ALL the team do – but to hear nothing about my favourite, who’s also supposedly the leading man on the show… well, it is sort of LIKE having your favourite dessert taken off the menu of your favourite restaurant, isn’t it? bit (not saying I;m unsympathetic, I simply pointed out that there isn’t a need to fear a lack of Sheppard — I thought it was a good post!), as well as Helen’s With the influx of new characters, Woolsey, Keller, Vega, (Clone)Carson and not counting the recurring characters, Lorne, Zelenka, Ellis and Caldwell, I am beginning to think when there will be time for our main cast, though I’m sure there will always be time for McKay. and her And now we have the Shrine for Rodney. How surprising that he gets a good meaty episdoe that will let him flex those wonderful acting skills of his again. We have already had the tearjerker where Rodney is dying episode where everyone was tearing up over him, Tao of Rodney, so wouldnt it have been more interesting to see another member of the team go through something like this. As much as I have prayed for some good emotional stuff for the rest of the cast, angsting over dying Rodney again just leaves me cold, been there done that. And now to my biggest complaint. What has happened to Joe Flanigan. Have you reduced his role in the show. I thought he was the leading guy and that meant being the focus of most episodes. But unfortunately the guy is just used for eye candy and rarely gets anything to sink his teeth into at all. Dare I ask why Sheppard seems to be taking a back seat to McKay when Joe is an amazing actor. (which, while she’s entitled to her opinion and perspective, I personally felt was unjustified, particulalry in regards to Rodney), as well as Teyla Roxs’ I’m beginning to feel that all the others are is support characters for Rodney,Rodney gets most of the limelight and Rodney saves the day most of the time…I feel like all Ronon and Teyla are there to do is look pretty and shoot and hit folks occasionally … My post was pointing out that it is not just the Rodney show, and that I felt Sheppard and the other character’s great moments were beinginexplicably overl-looked just so people could complain about Rodney’s screen-time, which seems woefully unfair to both the actors and the writers.

But we Rodney fans can be a wee bit overprotective, perhaps, even when we are almost equally Sheppard fans. 😉 Happy Birthday to the Hewlett!! Long Live the Squirrel King!!

  88. Yay, FRAN. I loved her.
And thanks for all the Sheppard info, Joe. Well, actually, thanks for all the info in general.
To me, more Sheppard in an episode is always (at all times, in any situation, never not) good. And the only thing better than more Sheppard is more Sheppard with Ronon.

    On April 17, 2008 at 6:40 pm amac251 Said:
“Is there anyway that you (or anyone) else can get Sheppard/Joe F. to take his shirt off this season?”

As a woman, I should be sensitve to focusing on someone’s appearance rather than their personality, but OMG shirtless Sheppard is so much more important than being socially responsible. And if Joe Flanigan needs a monetary incentive to lose the shirt, I’d contribute. Besides, we all know what a smarty pants Sheppard is (Joe Flanigan too) so it’s not ‘looks rather than personality’ it’s just equal consideration for both.

  89. Hey Joe – IT’S FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, I have been asked to ask (by my husband who is in love with Larrin) – will we be seeing anymore of the Travelers in Season 5?

  90. I’m so excited for season 5. It is airing in July, right? We only have a few months to wait versus a few months plus two (for a Fall airing)? I have a love/hate thing with spoilers, I don’t want to be spoiled, but I want to hear about everything that’s coming!

On another note, picked up my copy of The Android’s Dream. Thanks for the recommendation on F. Paul Wilson’s other books. I didn’t realize The Keep was part of a series. I read some other people’s comments and realized that I too was wondering why Glenn took so long to go into the keep and fight Molasar. Was he maybe waiting for the hilt of the sword to be unburied before going in? Maybe he couldn’t dig up the hilt and fight off Molasar at the same time…

  91. Yaaaaay, thanks for finallt clearing that up!!! SDee, that wasn’t too hard and I was getting tired of asking myself.

Hopefully, you can go ahead with “Hexed”, it sounds intriguing!

  92. I suspected your reasons for not having as many spoilers for Sheppard. (Not that I’m one of the ‘concerned’ ones.) I am also kind of glad for it. Since he’s my favorite character, I am not looking for many spoilers involving him this season. I want to be surprised. I want some ‘WTF’ moments of shock and real (fake) concern. The concept art you posted of Sheppard for Search and Rescue was great! It was enough to know he’s in danger. Well, he and the team are often in danger, but Shep doesn’t usually get so much as a scratch on him; unless he’s mutating into a bug or something. Thank you for what you have provided.

  93. When you are writing a story where one of the characters is going through a big change (like McKay in The Shrine) is it really hard to fit that into one episode? Do you have to compromise quite a lot with what you are able to put in the story and are there stories you would like to write but but cant becuase they would be too long for one episode but not long enough for two?

  94. With all the fan complaints about [insert favorite character here] not getting enough screen time or [insert most disliked character here] getting too much time, I see no one has mentioned Sgt. Chuck, our favorite gate technician. What about his backstory? Why did he decide to go thru the gate to the Pegasus Galaxy? Who does he spend time with in his off hours? What’s his last name?

    Heh.

To all the complainers about McKay getting more screen time (if he actually is getting more time), this is a scifi show. Somebody has to say the technobabble and most of the time it falls to McKay. And, this is a science expedition, not a military one (whatever you may feel about that situation) so the show is going to spend more time with the science talk than the military talk. McKay may get more lines, but that’s just the way his character is. His character is also loud, and that comes off more memorable than someone who is quiet. McKay is more words than action.

Sheppard can say so much with just a look, or his posture, he doesn’t need a lot of lines to get his message across. I remember the scene in the first season episode Home when Sheppard is in his fake apartment and he’s just let in his buddies. Who we later find out were his dead buddies. The look on Sheppard’s face just spoke volumes. That moment was my “wow!” moment for both Sheppard and Joe Flanigan. And I think the writers know that they can depend on Flanigan to convey what they want without having all the text surrounding it. That’s part of Sheppard’s character. Action, not words.

On a totally different topic: Joe, I just tried a bar of Dagoba 87% dark chocolate and found it to be not sweet enough and, surprisingly, actually not chocolate-ly enough for my tastes, which may have been due to the lack of sweetness. What do you think is the best percentage to make a great tasting chocolate? Do you prefer a chocolate mixed with other flavors, like the now trendly chili or with fillings (mmm, almond cream!), or just straight chocolate?

Also, I just bought a copy of “The Android’s Dream” (which you have a missing “n” in your sidebar) so I hope to be able to join in the discussion later. Can I read that book without reading “Old Man’s War”? I also have that book but haven’t gotten around to reading more than the first chapter.

  95. Well Joe, looks like you’ve just made me and every other Sheppard fan very happy with this Blog! 😀

Have to say though that I wasn’t one of the worried ones. I mean John Sheppard is well….John Sheppard! He’s the leader of his team so of course there’s gonna be plenty of stuff for him.

I love the nice mix of team episodes and more individual-focused episodes and besides, anything that happens to Rodney, Ronan or Teyla is also going to have an effect on John – I mean these people are not just his team members but they’re his friends and his family.

    I can’t wait for Season 5, it’s going to be awesome! 🙂

  96. Quick question: I know that the episodes are shot out of order, but are they written in order?

  97. Happy Birthday, LizB. It’s my birthday today, too. And happy birthday to David Hewlitt and David Tennant (since you mentioned them) — both of whom are fine actors.

  98. Re: Chevron’s Direct Quote plea
Go back and look through the comments on this blog for the past 2 weeks and look at the quotes yourself. Since you think that posters are only “showing the authors’ disappointment or frustration”, I doubt you will find anything that suits you. However, I feel that there are plenty of laments about Shep’s lack of screentime and the imbalance of meaty scripts that the actors are being given. The Martin Gero quote is from GW. I will not quote from GW here, but again, feel free to peruse any of the threads pertaining to Season 5’s upcoming episodes or JoeF’s threads.
Regarding Linzi’s comments–Chevron says: “These aren’t nasty at all to the other characters and actors. They just show the author’s disappointment or frustration.”
Says you. You do not get to decide what is or is not a nasty comment. That’s a matter of opinion. Incidentally, I wasn’t referring to Linzi’s post, she posted after me–I was referring to posts made yesterday and in the past couple of weeks.
These past few weeks, with no spoilers coming through about JoeF, a lot of statements were being thrown around about imbalance and unfairness of screentime as well as meaty scripts being given out to everyone (most especially McKay, Keller and the new characters) and not to Shep. I personally love JoeF and Shep. I love McKay, Ronon, Teyla, Lorne etc. You say that I made a sweeping, disrespectful statement about JoeF’s fans? I am a JF fan. As I said in my previous post, the ‘fans’ that are misquoting him (hell yeah, I’m air quoting it, because if you’re a true fan you don’t do that) are doing a great disservice to JoeF and all of the other actors. Until I actually read/see an article with JF stating that 1) He is unhappy with the amount of screentime that he is being given on SGA 2) He is unhappy with the absence of meaty scripts 3) He is unhappy with those meaty scripts being given to his fellow actors…then I’m going to assume he is quite happy with the way things are going. You can quote me on that. =)

  99. Happy b-day LizB and gollysunshine (and David Tennant!) Lucky you, sharing your day with David Hewlett!! ^^

And congrats to Darsy! I mean to say it earlier — forgive me!

  100. First time leaving a comment. I wanted to thank you very much for all of the information that you provide. I must read your blog everyday that I am able to, it is sorta of addicitive. I also wanted to thank you for turning me onto F. Paul Wilson. I read the book, The Keep, so I could follow along in the discussion of the book. I must say I really enjoyed it. I loved the idea from the begining of the Nazis getting attacked by the vampire, but then you have the great twist in it. I actually enjoyed the book so much that I picked up another of his books Midnight Mass. This was truly a vampire book and really cool. The characters are great and the story of the undead taking over the east coast of the US. pretty cool.

I myself enjoy when each member of the team has an episode that there are the “star” of. However, I really enjoy the show for the team aspect. The fact that these people really like and care for each other and are willing to put there lives on the line for each other. I loved that line in I belive it is Quest part two where Mitchell tells Vala the hard part is not putting your life on the line but watching your friends do it. I think that really goes along way to explaining why these shows are great.

  101. Ok, so my ears are burning! I actually hate my ears. Alas, they’re not cute little elf ears. Good job I have longish hair! 😆

I just want to say – don’t I always? 😆 Big mouth here or what? 😉 Anyway, to get back on track…I post here for a number of reasons.

Firstly I ADORE SGA. If I didn’t I wouldn’t care as much as I do, and certainly wouldn’t waste my time here or anywhere else talking about it. I’m passionate about SGA, totally obsessed with it, and want it to do so well!

Overall I’m a big fan, supporting the show in any way I can. Be it buying multiple dvd’s, calendars or Shep action figures.(What? So my husband thinks it’s weird that Special Field Ops Shep is sitting on my night stand. What does he know? 😉 ) Or me posting every day on the People’s Choice Awards and encouraging others to do the same, and getting RSI from the TV.Com’s poll. Yeah, I soon gave up on that! I like my fingers! And I’m a musician for crying out loud! 😉

Secondly I ADORE dogs. I love my puppy Lucy so much it hurts, and suddenly I love all dogs! Weird, huh? (New dog owner here who’s throwing herself enthusiastically into it. Now I love everyone’s dogs! 😳 )

Thirdly and I LOVE food! Much to the annoyance of my figure!

I don’t actually expect anyone to actually take notice of my posts, let alone read them! I’m just, ahem, “Releasing my burden”. Nobody’s actually supposed to make comments on them or actually digest my thoughts! I have thoughts? Huh. Who knew?

I love SGA. I’m a massive Shep fan. But I love all the main characters – and am trying desperately to love them all – regular or recurring. I love McKay and have met David and Jane, for example – (she’s a sweetie, incidentally), and will be doing so again soon.

I’ve met a fair few SGA actors and I’d never want anyone to think I don’t appreciate all of the actors, because I do. From Chuck, to David N. From Dan Payne to Ryan Robbins. From Torri to Paul McG…

I have never meant to come across as being derogatory to other characters. Or jaded for that matter.

However, I’m human. I have my favourite. I felt left out and slighted. Yes, maybe that’s immature. But I did feel as though I was not getting much from spoilers that I could be enthusiastic about. Sure, logic told me otherwise, but sometimes the heart rules the head.

However, now I feel reassured. So, I regret the fact that some may feel my posts and entreaties were offensive. That has not been my intention. Truly. 😳

Ok, so my burden has been well and truly released now, and I feel so much better!

So, Joe. Do I get whumped Sheppy in season 5 now? 😉

  102. Sorry Mr M, i’ve tried as always to keep my post short and sweet…. Tried being the operative word. 😆

Joanie loves Chachi said suprising more than I have in recent weeks…

Actually, I don’t recall anyone saying about Shep’s lack of screen time in season 4 being an issue here or elsewhere. And I do frequent a lot of the SGA threads. I personally have said I had concerns about S5 because we hadn’t heard much about Shep (yes i’m shallow). 😉 Is that what you’re referring to? I don’t recall in any of the ep threads for season 4 or 5 for that matter, people saying Shep hasn’t had sufficient screen time. I’ve seen posts ‘measuring’ actors screen time, but i’ve yet to see anyone saying he hasn’t had enough. Grateful if you could point me in that direction of where you’ve seen these posts. People (myself included) have said they would like for Joe to have a real tear jerker type of episode, like David’s Duet, Tao of Rodney, now The shrine. We’d like Joe to have that, and we’re entitled to say we’d like that, but liking and wanting are two different things and at the end of the day JLC, it’s not down to us is it? But as long as Mr M allows the posts to go through we have the right to say ask.

We can beg, plead, moan, even attempt to brainwash Mr M et al for all the lovely things we’d like to see. However, asking and getting are two different things aren’t they? Would you not plead a case for your character? Are you content with everything that you get for your character? Have you never said that you’d like more? If not, well sorry you’re one of the rare ones, and I applaud your satisfaction. But just like Oliver twist, we always want more of the things that we enjoy. Is that so wrong to want and hope for that?

If by chance you’re talking about the S5 thread at GW that I started, then ask me why I started it on the thread in question, don’t use it as an excuse to belittle why I question things on someone else’s blog. If you have some concerns with what i’ve written then by all means ask me, I only bite on Monday’s so you’ve got a few days grace. ;)If not have you asked the poste in question? My questions on GW related to Shep and the team is that the one you’re referring to? If so ask me on that thread, ask the others that have posted there. Is here really the right place to deal with these issues? Not that i’ve got anything to hide mind you. I’m a straight talker, and there’s nothing i’ve not said on GW that i’m not happy to say in front of Mr M. Your call though.

With regards to the ‘imbalance’ of meaty scripts. People, and I mean that in a general sense have different wants and needs. Some like action eps, some tear jerking eps, some Wraith/SciFi eps. People want different things out of an episode and for their character. What may suit one person in an ep, may not necessarily suit someone else, even if it relates to their favourite characters. Because we’re not lemmings (that was for your Joe. 😛 ) We’re individuals with differing wants and needs, i’m sorry if you find that difficult to accept or comprehend, but, that’s life.

You can quote me on that. =)

Nastiness is in the eye of the beholder. Your perceptions were that she was being nasty, but the comment was not directed at you, it was a sense of frustration as she had not heard anything about her favourite character. She felt based on the spoilers that had shown, that her favourite character was not going to be prominent, she’d heard about the Rodney ep, she was aware that Rodney had good stuff in the two parter. SO there’s 3 eps that your favourite character was being prominent in (i’m assuming its Rodney, apologies if i’m wrong, that’s just my perception and why it’s hit a raw nerve). Linzi, from how I saw it, simply wanted that same thing for hers. Likewise the Ronon fans and the Teyla fans and the Lorne fans and the Sam fans want probably the exact same thing. To a) Know that their character is going to get some great stuff, some maybe tearjerking feeling of luff b) Some character development c) A chance to shine… a tour de force ep. So where is the problem with saying you’d like that for your character to? When you hear nothing, you assume the worse, it’s a fandom thing. 😉

No one is saying that each of the characters/actors don’t deserve their chance to shine in their own right and collectively. What people’s concerns have been over the last few weeks is that their APPEARED to be an imbalance, when in fact Mr M has confirmed it was simply due to the nature of information that was being released. Now EVERYONE is feeling much better and they now know from what Mr M said that the BALANCE of character eps and TEAM eps is still very evident.

As for the whole ‘True fan’ comment, please. What is a true fan? Is it a fan that plays on the forums? Visit’s Joe’s blog, buys the DVD’s, has all the action figures? Goes to all the conventions? Just watches it on a Friday night and that’s it? Someone who likes to watch for their favourite character? Someone who likes Scifi? It’s not easy, why lump everyone into a little box, and say if you don’t fit into this criteria then you’re not a ‘true fan’, it’s unfair and causes nothing but problems to be honest, so any chance we can drop the ‘true fan’ crap? Thing is JLC, some people deliberately go out of there way to stuir things up, they put in a little snippet here and there about what an actor has supposedly said sometimes just to see the reaction. Strange but true.

    Oooooh lookie I rambled again, there’s a shock. 😳

Since i’m here, hope you had a good day Mr M and that you got up in time to sing with the birds. So what lovely things did you bring back from your adventures? 😀

And while i’m here can I just give Narelle a hug and say thank you. 😀

Quick question: I know that the episodes are shot out of order, but are they written in order?

Actually to expand on that, how do you guys decide which episodes to slot at which point in the season? I know basically they do follow an underlying main plot (sort of) but how do you decide when/where to put them? Is it as they are completed? Or is the next slot filled with the next idea and the sub-plot added later?

    Just curious!

  104. CheekyLil’Devil says:”Thing is JLC, some people deliberately go out of there way to stir things up, they put in a little snippet here and there about what an actor has supposedly said sometimes just to see the reaction. Strange but true.”

Exactly. That was my point. You may not agree with how I said it, but there it is.

CheekyLil’Devil says: “Nastiness is in the eye of the beholder. It’s fine with me if Linzi allows you to speak for her, but you do not speak for me. I was not referring to Linzi’s post—I said this to Chev in my last post—I was referring to posts that came before hers. Go back and look–my post was 5 hrs. earlier than Linzi’s. If you don’t like quotes being thrown around, then don’t do it to me either.

Also, paranoid much? Did I mention you in my post? Sorry to say, but I gave you no thought while typing up my post. Maybe next time. =)

I actually have no favorite. GASP! I like everyone, which is exactly why I was getting angry in seeing some of these comments. Shep is your favorite, would you not voice your concerns if posters started saying that Shep was getting all the screentime and meaty scripts? But alas, that’s just conjecture on my part. Sorry if I rubbed your DH nerve raw. You’ll have to explain what you meant by that to me……as I’m confused by that statement.

A true fan? Use the term or not, I don’t care. I think a true fan is someone who does not put words into the actors’ mouths. I don’t visit all the forums, buy the dolls, heck, I don’t even own all the dvd’s (yet!)–so maybe a ‘true fan’ is also in the eye of the beholder.

To use your favorite phrase CheekyLil’Devil (at least in your most recent post), JLC, I think I’ve hijacked the comments section of the blog long enough. I made my point. Agree or don’t. I have just as much right to state my concerns as you or anyone else does.

  105. I got quite a nasty wake up call at 4:30 this morning. We had an earthquake rated 5.2. I thought I was dreaming, but apparently not. Then at 10:15 there was another rated 4.5. I have been a little nervous since but I’m not so bad anymore.

I also want to say that I am glad you posted about the Shep inquiries. I usually read all the comments, but as of late, I just started skimming or not reading at all because it was getting a little bored with all the whining. I like any info you give us regardless of what or whom it is about. I think we’re lucky to get anything at all, so I say be grateful for what is given because it could cease to exist.

  106. Well Joe, its the end of Friday for me.*cheers and waves flags*
    Have a great weekend!

  107. Dish Network just added the Sci-Fi Channel in HD, and I got the chance to see an episode of Atlantis, and it looks absolutely amazing in HD……can’t wait for Season 5.

  108. Ok, so whining was the wrong word. I realized that after I hit submit, sorry.
Anyway, I should of said I was getting bored with the multiple questions about the subject. Even that sounds a little harsh. It was getting repetitive for my taste.
Have a great and earthquake free day to all!!!!!

  109. I want to thank those who recommended other ways to get the third book from Joe Ambercrombie. I am hopefully going to be ordering it in the next few weeks…I will be having surgery soon and need some entertainment to help igonore the pain…I mean pass the time.

I was wondering if any one knew the gate address to Camelot…I saw something on Winpekia (whatever that site is) but I am not sure if that is correct…I want to get that as a tattoo…it is one of my Favorite episodes…for many a reason.

  110. Sorry Mr M last post on the subject

    JLC has said…
Exactly. That was my point. You may not agree with how I said it, but there it is.

It’s late, so i’ll be succint. 😉 A first for me. I think at this point we’ll agree to disagree. You see things that I don’t, and unless I see quotes in what you’re referring to it’s very much hearsay. I’m sorry if this next bit sounds harsher than I intended, but you brought up the points you made about posters exploiting quotes and words, not me. I was simply responding. Thing is JLC, how I see it, is if you make a point about a post/poster then show me the evidence, show me Poster x’s comments. Generalisation doesn’t really work for me. I like facts. When you referred to Shep and the team, yes I did assume to a degree you were talking about something i’d written on GW due to your description. My apologies if it offended you, It may help you to know that i’m currently channeling McKay at the moment, so I tend to think everything anyone says is about me. 😛

Great, if you’ve got no favourites, I think that’s a great way to be, not everyone is like that though. Sometimes, and don’t take this personally, but you did jump to DH’s defence, which is why I assumed that McKay was your favourite character, and believe it or not, people do tend to ‘jump to the defence’ of a character/actor whom they favour it’s a protection thing.

As for speaking for Linz, it’s not a case of her allowing me to speak for her, she’s opinionated enough to answer for herself. I simply agree with her post and understood it, which is why I spoke up. That, and the fact that i’m extremely opinionated myself. 😛

As for the true fan bit, fine if that’s what you believe ‘makes’ a true fan that is your prerogative, but as i’ve said before it may simply be someone stirring the pot, or not, does it make them any less of a fan? No of course not, it just means that their priorities and how they conduct themselves is different. They may have believed what they were saying was accurate? Who are we to judge? Especially when we don’t even know at this point in time who it was, what was said, the inflection used, what the poster was thinking/feeling when they wrote that. Soo many variable, so little time to ponder.

So at this point in time, I think we shall have to agree to disagree. 😀

  111. Joanieloveschachi …CheekyLil’Devil don’t force me to put you in the ‘Harmony Hut’ together. In that place of unbridled horror, for your own good, you will be forced to watch, The Sound of Music, The Brady Bunch, Annie and the ultimate sanction Pocahontas. These movies will be repeated ad nauseam until you come out friends!
Desperate times call for desperate measures.

    Pauline

  112. Pauline sounds great to me, you know how I love bonding, and i’m always willing to do a ‘Lost’ type challenge, what say you JLC? 😀 And i’m sure Carl could loan us a copy of Pocahontas if Mr M gave him the nod? Joe, you up for the challenge? 😉

  113. PMSL I’m watching One Missed Call and all I’m going to say is its another ‘Bint in a Bind’ story, oh dear.

  114. reading the blog the last few days has shown me how *alike* we fans can be at times. while i don’t fan sheppard, i do sam and i’ve felt the same worries and down the sheppard fans were feeling. this is the first time in 11 years that i don’t have a stargate show to watch with sam carter. i’ve got ‘sanctuary’ coming up, but… i’ll have the first ep of s5, then i’ll never know *for sure* if she’ll be on again, and, in what capacity.

it’s kind of sad for me to see all these new eps being discussed, but knowing sam won’t be in them. i’m *really* sorry to see her not included in ‘the shrine’. knowing what it’s about (and who it focuses on), i just know there would have been awesome scenes between sam and mckay. 🙁

so, joe, whenever you get any ideas or actual episode news about sam, please share, okay?

    sally =)

  115. I just wanted to say YAY for friendship moments! I’m really glad to hear that the friendships between the members of the core team are going to get more development! That’s what I love the most about SGA: the caring between Shep, Rodney, Ronon and Teyla. I watch for the friendship moments (okay, and for the Shep whump ;)…and the action and- okay, so I love the show!), and I’m very excited to hear that we’ll be getting more team eps!

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! *bounce bounce bouncedy bounce!* 😀

  116. So, ‘CSI: Atlantis’?

I wonder who will have to die in order to give Sheppard the opportunity to play Grissom… Time to make some kind of poll about that, people! XD

  117. when you said the epis was called CSI: Atlantis i couldent help but laught but thinking about it is that really the name of the episode? can you get away with calling it that

  118. So… totally off tangent here but… “The brilliant one slowly loses his mind” is Rodney in THE SHRINE. Sorry, may be Old News to some but I’m still trying to suss out your poem.

  119. Wow. Just want to say thanks to today’s usual suspects for reminding me of just why I had stopped reading the comments and just stuck with the blog entries themselves. There’s enough anger and unhappiness in the real world without having to wade through spite and aggression in here. :/

I’m a bit disappointed you don’t have any substance for your debate. If you’re unhappy with folks at Gateworld, discuss it at Gateworld.

You want me to search for the quotes for your side of debate? Hmmmm, hope you don’t work for the UN. I never said that people weren’t commenting that McKay got more meaty episodes than Sheppard. I actually provided those examples. I said that I didn’t believe they were nasty. Everyone can make their own decision on that if they want, as you have.

With regard to your response about misquoting – I haven’t seen the misquoting here. You haven’t backed it up with evidence. If you’re still talking about Gateworld then again perhaps you should discuss it at Gateworld. I actually think we agree on one thing. I also wait until I hear it from Joe F. I don’t believe wild rumours about what someone heard he said etc etc.

    And that’s that.

    Cheers, Chev

  121. Hello,

Do you know what type of glasses michael shanks wears throughout the first 9 seasons of stargate sg-1 and if they are available anywhere? Or if its possible could you provide me with the contact details of someone who works in the wardrobe deparment.

    Kind Regards
