Yesterday’s leisurely afternoon came as a welcome respite following Friday’s hectic schedule. I slept in, read a little more of A Game of Thrones (loving it!), and then met up with my three charming San Diego guides – April, Monique, and Melissa – for a late lunch at Prado’s in Balboa Park. We shared five plates, among them a stand-out crispy calamari tossed in a sweet chili sauce, and seared Kobe beef rolls. We then took the drive back to 5th street where we went to a placed called Sensational Desserts (I think?) where we shared: a divine carrot-crème brulee cake, a macadamia chocolate torte, an ultra-rich tres leches cake, and a pavlova with guava cream. By the time I got back to the hotel at 6:00 p.m., I was wired and not in much of an eating mood, so rather than join the rest of the gang at Rice, I elected to relax in my hotel room and, of course, update my blog.

We all met downstairs in the lobby at 7:00 p.m. and, for a change, I was the only one NOT wearing a jacket. Joe F. had traveled back to L.A. that morning, but Michael Shanks had flown in to join us. We left the W in three limos and arrived at the Sci Fi/Entertainment Weakly Party for 8:00 p.m. We did the requisite red carpet walk, then settled down in a little area where Matt ordered up about a dozen fruity martinis while I snapped shots of our cast running the gauntlet of reporters as the smoke emanating from pool wafted up and over the proceedings.

Last year’s party was great and this year’s was even better. I wasn’t hungry which was too bad because the short rib sliders and ice cream bar (where you could order up your own ice cream creations) looked mighty good. And the turn-out was quite impressive. Beside the talent from the various Sci Fi shows, there were more than a few surprise party-crashers: J.J. Abrams, Robert Downey Jr. who was at Comic Con promoting Iron Man, Liv Tyler, adult film star Jenna Jameson who was accompanied by a tatted-up bruiser, comedian Sara Silverman, Edward Norton, John Favreau, Stan Lee, author Cory Doctorow (check out his hilarious Down And Out In the Magic Kingdom), and Joss Whedon who reconnected with former Firefly/Serenity- present Atlantis star Jewel Staite.

A good time was had by all. I caught up with some people, chatted with entertainment reporter Mary McNamara, thanked the gang at Sci Fi for all of their hard work, then headed back to the hotel for another 50 pages of A Game of Thrones before bed.

This morning, I caught the 12:30 p.m. flight back to Vancouver with Martin Wood. Enroute, we sampled some of the chocolates I got while in San Diego. Michelle of SCB gifted me with two bars – a 100% cocoa and a wild dark chocolate, chili and peppercorn bar that did a terrific job of clearing our sinuses. We also tried the Vosges milk chocolate and green tea bar, a Chuao dark chocolate and almonds, hazelnuts, and pistachios, and a spectacular Chuao milk chocolate Early Grey bar that I ended up giving to our air hostess because she loved it so much.

Big week ahead. The in-laws are in town and Chef Will Poole of Wen Chocolates is driving in on Tuesday with a cake for the staff (!!!). We have our production meeting for Kindred II and I look forward to the extra special guest who’ll be putting in an appearance (I refer, of course, to our new French Bulldog Lulu who we’ll be picking up Monday night). Also, I received emails from those ever-so-determined Nigerian scammers James Williams and Ali, so both Cookie Monster and Aloysius P. Hazzencockle will be replying in a timely fashion.

Today’s pics: kick-ass calamari, carrot-creme brulee cake, Jewel ready to rock, MGM’s Theo Dumont snaps me snapping him, a pre-limo Chris and David, director Martin Wood sporting a killer jacket, the smoking David Hewlett!, and the smoking Amanda Tapping!, Matt keeping a wary eye on John G. Lenic, Sci Fi’s gorgeous Kim Volonakis, the red carpet, the press!, the ever-so-suave Matt, the swimming pool is on fire!, Jewel Staite and Morris Chapdelaine, mmmmm sliders, Amanda Tapping and Michael Shanks brave the red carpet together, Gary Jones and Ben Browder regale the press, Ben Browder walks the red carpet, Michael Shanks makes a break for it, Martin Wood and Chris Judge take on both the press and the fog, Brandon Molale and the lovely Kimberly Wolfe, Sci Fi’s Patrick Lee with the future Captain Marvel?, bad boy author Cory Doctorow, writer and all around nice guy Rafael Jordan, Claire and I, Mary McNamara checks her camera, Sci Fi’s Tony Optican (paisley pants not pictured), Amanda and Damian chow down.

Karen Krasne, the dessert chef we were dazzled by, turns out was a neighbor of my husband when he was growing up here.

all that and Beckett comes back, a delicious weekend!

  2. Hiya Joe,

Martin Wood looks smashing in his jacket, I should add – and I’m guessing he did not team that with shorts? Pity we can’t see his trousers.

I was wondering if you’d gotten back as from all the photos floating around the web, it looks like everyone had a great time.

I can’t believe though that you had time to look at your junk mail – I’m sure Ali is more than dead, given the state of his “condition” from all correspondences.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

  3. Hot pic of David H, but why didn’t you tell us that he has spikes growing out of his head?

  4. Wow you guys were really rubbing elbows with the stars down there. You all look very spiffy. Amanda always has the coolest hair. Great photos, I loved the expressions on everyone’s faces! Should we be on the lookout for a television feature on SG?

  5. Wonderful pics. That carrot-creme cake looks like it would cure my sweet tooth over the computer.

    Thanks for your coverage!

  6. Wow. Michael and Chris are looking mighty fine! Mr Browder isn’t exactly chopped liver either. And didn’t little Gabriella Da Vinci grow up gorgeous? Thanks for the pictures. Can’t wait for the DVDs.

  7. Does David Hewlett have that weird expression on his face becuase he knows you took a photo of him with what looks like part of a clock growing out of his head?? 😉 And wow, Chris Judge sure looks spiffy.

  8. Loving the photos! That Amanda one is… wow. Just wow. Jewel is looking awesome too!

  9. Hi Joe,

Thank you so much Joe for all of the pictures, and keeping the fans updated during Comic Con. A very special thank you for the pictures of Michael. He looks great. I love his jacket. Michael must be dieting with Chris for “Rage of Angels” because he looks very thin.

I especially love the picture of Amanda and Michael on the Red Carpet. My two favorites together. What more can I say but THANK YOU!

    (((HUGS)))

  10. Hope you had fun in San Diego – glad you had a chance to check out the Prado (I love the setting and it’s where I would take visiting guests when I lived in SD) – it and George’s are two of the more quintessential San Diego restaurants (along with a zillion hole in the wall Mexican and Phillipino places).

  11. hi, joe,

now that the release dates on the stargate sg1 movies have been pushed back (again), how will that change the timeline for sam on atlantis?

    sally 🙂

  12. Thanks for the great pictures. Too bad Mr. F. wasn’t there. Sounds like a rocking good time.

Hope the puppy is welcomed by the other pups with open paws. Or at least as little chaos as possible. Is she already potty trained, or you and Fondy have the lovely task?

Great to have you back Mr. M. By the way, watched the sci-fi broadcast online, and somehow you are not nearly as snarky, as you sound on your blog when you speak. Or maybe I was just tired? Chef Wen’s cake sounds drool worthy, please post lots of pictures.

So can we get some spoilers now please? Specifically about Shep & Weir … are we getting some good bonding moment scenes between them (as in shippy moment) in the few little episode the TH is in? If you’ve already answered this when I was not paying attention, I hang my head in shame … but repetition only makes us better ….at something.

    Have a great week.

  13. Great pictures. I wanted to comment on something the Sci-Fi representative said at Comic-Con, though. Why does everyone keep making ignorant statements telling us to watch Atlantis live (and not on Tivo or iTunes)? I keep hearing this and keep hearing this until I want to scream.

I do plan on watching it as it airs, but that won’t actually do anybody any good because I don’t have a Nielsen ratings box. No Nielsen box? You don’t matter. You can watch the show live all you want, won’t make a whit of difference. Also, maybe the people who Tivo it are watching it when it comes on and then saving it to also watch it later. Nobody knows for sure, because those Tivo folks also don’t have Nielsen boxes.

  14. Hey Joe,
Wow, great week man, sounds like you had some fun. Sorry about not commenting I was in the city of Colorado Springs for vacation. Did you know you can’t just drive up to Cheyenne Mountain? Any way 2 quick questions to help a little family stargate squable after being in the fine city of C.S. 1. Were any locations in C.S. used in filming SG-1 or SGA, what about the Cheyenne Mt. footage, was that shoot by you guys, or did the AF give that to you. 2. Do you have the words to the theme song you or Paul (i am sorry I cannot remember who) wrote? My wife says that the word swirl is not used in the song, I say it is. I have listend to the commentary over and over, but we cannot quite tell. Thanks!

  15. What a wonderful panel! Thank you for going to comic con!

I was wondering if we are going to see the science side of Lorne any in Atlantis? Like having him do geology stuff offworld or something?

  16. Holy crap! That first picture of Amanda….Don’t get me wrong, I’m entirely on the side of liking dudes, but if I weren’t…holy cow.

  17. hi, joe,

I don’t mean to spam your blog today, but…

I’d like to share my thoughts on the ep ‘unending’. when I first saw the ep, even though there were things I didn’t like about it, I still thought it was beautifully done. then a couple of ppl on gateworld forum suggested a sam/teal’c relationship, and that good feeling started to diminish. but since I still saw only friendship there, I was still digging the ep. then…

I heard the commentary for ‘unending’, where amanda stated that her and chris were doing a sam/teal’c shippy hint. it was one thing having a handful of fans say something, but… it’s stuck in my head now. and it’s real.

it was bad enough when there was not one single mention of jack o’neill and no mention/hint of sam/jack, but this… I was actually afraid it was going to go sam/mitchell (mitchell is dreamy), but this came out of left field.

as melodramatic as this will sound, the commentary ruined (an already shaky) ep for me.

i just wanted to say this. thanks.

    sally 🙂

  18. Thank YOU, Joe, and everyone who went to San Diego Comic Con 2007 to represent Stargate.

    We appreciate your sacrifice(s)!

Especially, thank you for the lovely photos.

  19. Hey Joe, many thanks for the review from other side of the stage. It’s often quite rewarding to hear, see and imagine what goes on from both angles, especially when one is stuck at home. 🙂

  20. Joe,
These questions are for the Showrunner/Producer in you. At what point during the creation of an episode is the budget available discussed assuming you don’t equally distribute the budget over 20 shows? Is it right at the beginning when all the writers are thinking up ideas for the season or a story, later after the episode has a written outline, or when you get together with all the production dept. heads about the episode?
Do you have rule of thumb estimations for things like CGI, special FX, set construction, or wardobe costs that you can apply in the early stages of development of an episode?
Do you budget more for the season premieres, mid-season two-parters, and the season finale knowing those are always BIG episodes?
Thanks in advance for your answers.

  21. as melodramatic as this will sound, the commentary ruined (an already shaky) ep for me.

    Oh FCOL!

Give. It. A. Rest. The world does not turn on Sam and Sir. You might not like it but there you go. If you have issues with the commentary take it up with Amanda Tapping, she was the one who said it and after all, she is notoriously changeable when it comes to who her character should bed. I certainly can’t blame her if she likes the idea of Sam with a hottie like Teal’c, or Pete for that matter. Maybe older men just don’t do it for her? It’s not a crime.

In any case, Joe neither wrote the episode nor made the commentary, so what does it have to do with him? I would think if you are as big an AT fan as you say you are you would be encouraging her chances on Atlantis rather than trying to tie her to a character who is long gone. She can hardly be in the Pegasus galaxy and putting up picket fences with Jack can she? Or are you so invested in getting your own way that you’d rather see her out of the show than not get “her man”?

  22. In yesterday’s comments:

    Anonymous said…

Forget adding Amanda. All you have to do to boost the viewing audience is get Flanigan to wear that white shirt on the show.

Do you know how lucky you are to have him? He makes pretty much every other lead man look like a peasant!

I couldn’t have put that sentiment any better myself. Joe Flanigan has class

  23. it was bad enough when there was not one single mention of jack o’neill and no mention/hint of sam/jack, but this… I was actually afraid it was going to go sam/mitchell (mitchell is dreamy), but this came out of left field.

Why? Amanda has talked about wanting to explore the relationship between Sam and Teal’c for years, to me this just looked like a natural continuation of that. 50 years is a long, long time without some human contact. No wonder poor Cameron just ran round and round and round. Besides, there’s even a few Sam/Teal’c shippers, are you so selfish you begrudge them this tiny bit of payoff in one single episode? Does it all have to go your way?

  24. Looks as though a good time was had by all! 🙂

A milk chocolate Early Grey bar? Please explain how this works, we have no such exotic confectionary where I live!

It puts my mind at ease to know that poor Ali is still with us, in spite of his suffering.

That’s the main reason for me too. I mean I wouldn’t really have a problem we’ve Sam/Tealc if it had been a full reset. But Tealc remembers and therefore is in love with Sam now. I think however this will be disregarded in the future and out of all that happened in Unending will be left with the stupid Asgard suicide…

  26. That first pic of Amanda has just turned me into a lesbian.
    Smokin’ indeed!
    WOW!!!

  27. @majorsal
Your rant here has not point. Joe wasn’t involved in making of Unending, so you’re probably better off directing your rants to Cooper. Though from what I understand th relationship between Sam and Teal’c wasn’t scripted, it was more of an actors’ choice. Maybe you should complain to Amanda and Chris.

    @Joe
I loved the season 4 trailer.
When will we know for sure if there’s gonna be a season 5?

“it was bad enough when there was not one single mention of jack o’neill and no mention/hint of sam/jack, “

    Sally ,

I’m sorry you’re upset. I really enjoyed Unending. It wasn’t a feel good story , but it was very character driven. Even if you don’t like the S/T hint , there were a lot of good Carter moments , and she ultimately saved the day.

So noone mentioned Jack; who hasn’t been part of SG-1 or SGC for years. The episode’s conversations were about the issues at hand. Noone else was mentioned either. Landry didn’t talk about his daughter , Mitchell about his parents or newly rekindled love. Nobody talked about their personal lives, or the ones they left behind. Except for a brief scene , even the fate of the Earth & Asguard weren’t mentioned. Theres only so much you can do in an alotted time.
The anti- Vala crowd have complained about the Daniel & Vala relationship in Unending. I am a D/V shipper. Even so, I’d like to think he found something in her to love rather than spend the rest of his life alone. I’m pleased by the S/T relationship. I was sad none of the other characters had gotten together. Plus it makes the agony of Mitchell more intense.
I can understand the Dan/ Sam & Cam / Sam shippers being upset…but Jack isn’t even there ! Sam and Jack both had intimate relationships with other people when they were on earth ! In similar circumstances , Jack took a lover and went on with his life. In a few months !.( One Hundred Days ) Is Sam supposed to be faithful to their unrealized relationship for life ? She never expects to see him again ! Jack would want her to have a life .I felt that the cello emphasized her determination to make the best of the situation.

  29. Yasmin, don’t expect an answer on the Shep/Weir question. I get the feeling JM doesn’t like Weir at all… otherwise she’d be in more than four episodes.

  30. Didn’t expect to see Cory in your photos 😉 A brilliant speaker on digital rights, copyright and copyleft, I’ve seen him give some great talks in London.

  31. For those fans that think Mitchell didn’t have anyone in Unending…..

One word. ‘Clandry’ That’s why Mitchell and Landry were always playing chess together. Of course it could also be why Mitchell is always running too. Trying to escape. Do you honestly think that he would go 50 years without? He probably trashed his room because Daniel had Vala, Teal’c had Sam, and he was left with Landry.

  32. Salut Joe!

Merci pour les photos, mais il y a un truc qui m’intrigue:
Pourquoi Carter à les cheveux long sur Atlantis, alors que dans sg1 elle les avaient toujours court?

  33. Thanks to share all you adventure !

Good to have some news about the production… In France, there’s nothing about it ! We have one year late on our sci-fi shows.

  34. Dear Mr Malozzi,

Thanks for the photos, ( Amanda, that smile ! wow!)I knew nothing about those ComicCon events. Sounds bizarre for me and tiring for you.
A question, easier for me to ask in french and if you wish to answer in english, no offense.

  35. Hi Joe,

Thanks for all the great pictures and the Comic Con updates! Sounds like you all had an enjoyable time.

  36. Isn’t ‘A Game of Thrones’ good!

Fabulous, fabulous characters (my favourite is Varys the Spider, particularly when he quotes a certain ‘plain and simple’ tailor from a certain TV programme) and it’s so richly written and such a convincing world.

Take nothing and no one for granted or at face value.

Though I’ve stopped reading with A Storm of Swords as I’m saving all the rest of the series until he’s finished them, I’m paranoid that he won’t get to finish it!!!!!

    Brilliant stuff.

    Frostfox

  37. For all the people who dislike Sam/Teal’c you’ve got to look at t=it from the characters oint of view

Carter was stuck on ship indefinitly, her choices of partners were limited to Teal’c, Mitchell or Landry….

Who among us wouldn’t go for Teal’c

    P.S. “Clandry” = LMAO funny 🙂

  38. Love the pics! Michael and Chris are drop dead gorgeous and Amanda looks beautiful. You’re looking pretty spiffy yourself Joe.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been to your blog in quite awhile so I apologize if this has already been asked and answered. Will we get to see Dr. Jackson do a guest spot in season 4?

  39. Indeed, David and Amanda are smoking h-o-t-t!!! And some great personality too. Love them and can’t wait to see them on the same screen comes season 4.

  40. One word. ‘Clandry’ That’s why Mitchell and Landry were always playing chess together.

I thought that pairing was LanCam. Or was it CamLan? Clandry works though. *LOL*

  41. Hey Joe!

Since Continuum won’t come out until around the time Atlantis Season 5 (hopefully) begins, does that mean that the movies from then on will be a year behind? Or will the next ones skip ahead to catch up, leaving a year unaccounted for? No complaints here either way, just curious.

  42. Great Pics, thank you.

It looks like you and Jewel and her husband Matt have become firm friends. That’s nice.

It must be hard to find your feet after all that red-carpeting, but it will be great to have you back.

Now, fit that ball and chain to your left ankle and get back to work!

  43. Hi Joe,

are Vala/Daniel shippers going to be mad at Robert Cooper after The Ark of Truth or there is hope for us to be happy for our favourite and the most wonderful couple in SG-1’s entire history?

  44. Hello Joe!

Thanks so much for being a part of the SGA Panel at Comic-Con (which I watched on sci-fi.com)! Thanks also for the wonderful pictures of food and beautiful people! I’m not sure if I should show those great pictures of Amanda to my husband – he might take off to the Great White North! Have a lovely day and take care.

Please let Sci-Fi know that even though we don’t have the Sci-Fi channel (so watching Atlantis “live” or even currently is not possible for us), we totally support the show and enjoy the episodes in syndication and DVD. So, keeping it going is good for us too!

  45. *waves*

Before I ask a question, can I just say that on two seperate occasions I am agreeing with anon. I must be slipping 😉 or they’re coming round to my way of thinking. 😛 Hehehe

    *cough*

    “Anonymous said…

Better still, no shirt :o) Or if the ep requires that Shep be…. *forces herself to say the words*… Clothed! *sniff* Then i’m in total agreement with anon that we should have the white shirt for chest peekage, or the black shirt of yum… only a size smaller. 😉

So with the priority stuff out the way. :o) A question for you Mr M. Has the last slot to be filled been decided on, or is that Joe’s pitch? Can I just say, backstory AND evil Shep! Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Okay i’m done having a fangirl moment. Thank you so much for the yummies of the celebrations and the cast. I look forward to eventually seeing clips of the con, or the wonderful SGA trailer that i’ve heard so much about.

    *hugs*

Thanking you Mr M you’re as always a very wise and kinds man. 😀

  46. Love the pic’s Joe, thank you for sharing them. Amanda just looks amazing and it looks like you all had a good time and lot’s of good food.

Do you have a Youtube account? cos I thought it would be cool if you could make some video diary’s as well as blogging, anyway just a thought!

  47. I never thought I’d say a pic of a
carrot-creme brulee cake looked better than one of Joe Flanigan…but it’s true. This time.

Could you tell Joe F. that I love it when he wears his white guaze shirt to the conventions. He always looks extremely sexy in it.

Love your blog, Joe. You always put a smile on my face.

  48. Hey Joe,

Just wanted to once again say Thanks for the pics from Comic Con.

If I may echo some of the sentiments already expressed…..Joe Flanigan….white shirt of Yum….YESSSS!!!!

Ben Browder looks mighty spiffy as well. I was very pleased to see Michael Shanks too…..he looks niiiice.

    No Jason at Comic Con?

    Have a great day!

  49. Dude! Thanks so much for taking the time to post these updates. Even for those of us who attended the con, the behind-the-scenes extras (the scifi parties and your dining experiences) are always a great treat.

Oh, and it’s EXTRAORDINARY Desserts 😉

    Patti… native San Diegan =D

  50. I love Cory! I was so disappointed I didn’t see him at Comic Con. I have never met him, despite my work with the EFF. But I hear he teaches at USC now, so maybe I will finally meet him.

    Too cool Joe!

  51. That really is a fantastic candid shot of Amanda – she looks amazing! Forget writing that novel Joe… when (hopefully far far faaaar into the future!) Stargate Atlantis ends, you should try out a career in photography! 🙂

Hope getting back to the daily grind after the chaos and partying of ComicCon wasn’t too much of a trauma.. and that little Lulu is settled in happily.

So tell us… any fun fight scenes to look forward to in The Kindred? 😉

  52. Thanks for all the pics you posted on Saturday and Sunday. I love the ones with either David Hewlett or Joe Flanigan. Amanda and Jewel look great too, but as a huge fan of Atlantis since the first day, I always enjoy the pics of the Joe, David, Rachel and Jason you share with us. Pics of Chuck, Torri, Paul, Mitch Pileggi, David Nykl and Kavan Smith are also appreciated *hint, hint*

Hope John’s backstory stays in the episode and is not postponed! I’m so looking forward to that! Since I read years ago Sci Fi’s character bio where it says “The son of a respected Cold War colonel, Sheppard, while on duty in Afghanistan, disobeyed a direct order in an attempt to save the lives of three servicemen”, I always wondered if John’s father was still alive and, if yes, if they might have argued big time about John disobeying an order, and that was why he didn’t send him a message in Letters from Pegasus.

Anyway, whatever you come up with, it’ll be very much appreciated. Now, if you could tell us something else about this backstory… I know you won’t tell huge spoilers and I’m fine with that, but I love your small teasers *grins*

Any chance of posting some more pics of Mr. Flanigan? We didn’t get many pics of him this weekend *insert as much begging as possible, trying not to sound too pathetic. Ha!*

  53. Hi Joe!! Thanks for the awesome pics. Looks like you guys had a great time there. Love the pic of David lol, and Amanda looked gorgeous! She truly is as beautiful on the outside as she is on the inside. But I guess everyone already knew that!

Also the food looked really good! I have to admit that I have never tasted a carrot-creme brulee cake *hides in shame*, is it any good?

    Sofie 😀

i didn’t realize someone *had* to get together with someone else. what’s wrong with just a deep friendship? daniel and vala got together because of their previous-to-the-event feelings, but the rest… i saw mitchell kiss sam at the christmas dinner and touch her shoulder after landry died and hold her hand when he showed her the beam; maybe they got together too?

also, i,d want to thank all the usual suspects for coming out; you’re as dependable and predictable as the LA smog. :p

    sally 😀

  55. Hey Joe! Just had to comment on your reading of A Game of Thrones. I couldn’t put it down! Excellent!

    Nice Pics of Amanda, rawr!

  56. i didn’t realize someone *had* to get together with someone else. what’s wrong with just a deep friendship?

For 50 freaking years???? You might be able to go without for that long but a normal, healthy adult’s gonna get a bit itchy if you know what I mean.

  57. also, i,d want to thank all the usual suspects for coming out; you’re as dependable and predictable as the LA smog. :p

As are your posts. And just as fragrant.

  58. Hi and Greetings from Nova Scotia
Really you guys should film out here…I think it it much nicer than BC, but then I am prejudiced.Keep up the Good Work.

  59. Hey Joe If Sci-fi expressed interest in bringing sg1 back to the network, do you think MGM would be interested? Would you, brad and Co. be interested?

  60. you mentioned Rachel will be pregnant for the entire season 4. we are not well informed, but based on press conferrence recently and her mentioning her doula on set, it would seem to me she is due soon. Are you not back on set shooting 2nd half of season 4? has Rachel returned from hiatus or remaining out pending the birth of her child and no time frame for return, which doesn’t equate to entire season?
