Today, we headed down to the corner of 29th and Boundary where I scored a half kilo of pure Greek Gold, a.k.a Hellenic Heat, a.k.a spit-roasted lamb. While everyone else is off celebrating Canada Day, Fondy and I were in Burnaby celebrating Greek Fest. Although the celebrations kicked off a couple of days ago, festivities will run through the rest of the week so there will be plenty of opportunity for return visits.

Unable to convince Fondy to splurge $165 on a whole lamb (“But we can split it!”), I went with the aforementioned half kilo of lamb with a Greek salad while Fondy had the lamb platter. The lamb was delicious, sweet and well-marbled. The Greek salad fulfilled its side plate duties. For dessert, Fondy had the loukoumas, deep-fried dough coated with honey and sprinkled with sesame seeds. I opted for something a tad sweeter, the coma-inducing baclava: layers of phyllo dough filled with chopped nuts and bathed in honey syrup.

Back in the car, stuffed, sated, and a little too relaxed, it took me a while to realize I’d been waylaid. Instead of heading home, I was whisked away to Surrey to check out a baby French Bulldog in need of a good home. Seriously. Between the orphans and the dogs, I’m padding a fairly convincing resume for Sainthood.

Anonymous #2 writes: “When you film an episode , you sometimes say how you had to leave scenes out cause of time issues even though the scene was filmed. My question is what is done with that and why dont you guys ever insert some of that back into episodes on dvd release?”

Answer: There’s usually a good reason why certain scenes don’t make the cut. And, for the most part, we rarely lose whole scenes but parts of a given scene – a snip here, a cut there. The finished version is a lot tighter and, thus, preferable.

  1. Just watched the panel interview you guys did four days ago – great job! I’m really looking forward to season 4!

Oy, another cute puppy! Perhaps another dog you definitely won’t be getting? Or are you going to stick to just one other puppy you won’t be getting?

  2. Adorable pictures of the bulldog.

So did you get the “baby French Bulldog in need of a good home?”

  3. Ok Joe, I’ll make it short and sweet:

Is Julian Sands in/going to be in/was in Stargate SG1: The Ark of Truth?

  4. Any chance we will hear Rachel sing in season 4? She has such a beautiful voice!

  5. No plans for Ford, hey? Since you guys have admitted you’re doing a Ford on Elizabeth, I guess that shows what the hopes are for her for the future.

  6. evening joe. was at work today and thought that if you are trying to pad your sainthood application you should drop by our animal shelter it is a very nice place you’d love it(and i promise you wont have to take anything home).

As for audiobooks it has been a godsend for me lately with a very active 15month old to chase around she’d tear up a regular book(though i still much prefer them to audiobooks).

Question of the day- did you know that Peter DeLuise did an episode of Lifetime’s series “Blood Ties”?

Incidently it was his episode that hooked me into that fandom. Go figure!

  7. That has to been the cutest puppy ever!
Do you plan attending any concerts this summer or any small road trips?
DO you usually attend a lot of festivals and would you travel to one?

  8. “Argentina, the land of kangaroos” perhaps you made a slight error there. Kangaroos belong down under, not in Argentina.

  9. oooh, puppy! Just look at that widdle face!

Question: When a costume requires chainmail is it made in-house? (wondering because I make mail as a hobby)

  10. So, if you have no plans for Ford and, since you have “admitted” that you are doing a “Ford” on Elizabeth, does that mean Oscar Cooper will replace Joe Flanigan for season 6 after Flanigan leaves having completed his 100 episodes … ?

    😉

  11. There will be a one-day delay in Atlantis: The Musical.

And remember…my creative posts reduce World Suck.

UGH! It’s a scifi show, not American Idol.

PM can wrestle. JF excels at skiing. We didn’t see them doing that on the show, why do we always have to hear about Rachel singing?

  13. “Answer: Pleased to hear you enjoyed it. You can also download the audio portion to your computer and listen to it every night before you go to sleep.”

Seeing as how you snipped my entire post let’s just clarify for the sake of honesty and full-disclosure that the use of “incredible” is not in a good way. I for one will not be reading it again – or listening to it even once – as it was funny enough the first time (they always say if you didn’t laugh you’d cry) and some of what he’s got to say just makes one sit and wonder — WTF?????

  14. WE WANT FORD! WE WANT FORD! WE WANT FORD!

Lemme show you all wuts up

    No Ford?
    And we’re bored!
    Why bring him back?
    Cause he was black!
Why, if I see that fool Ladin,
    Then where’s my man Aiden?
To show devotion, I even made a gourd
    That looked just like Ford!
Any chocolate we send, you’re free to hoard,
But bring back our brother Ford!
So stop hadin on my man Aiden,
Or I’ll start raidin – cause I’m tired of waiden
I’ll ward off any of them, with a foot to the face –
Like Ford would’ve, to put them in der place!
Now why is it I that’s hadin?
    CAUSE I’M NOT SEEING AIDEN!

  15. How about Tony Bennett doing a version of the SG1 theme song, the infamous commentary version?

Ha. Maybe in Argentina, the land of Kangaroos. Where pigs tend to drink too much Red Bull.

  16. BTW Joe:

Webster’s on “Incredible” = not credible; unbelievable. Thanks for the honesty and clarification on that Cooper interview thing.

  17. Its official Joe. As proven by a Koala bear – Sarcasm is lost on Anonymous. All those snarky witticisms that you manage to type out with little effort in reply to Anonymous has been completely wasted on them.

However, the rest of us get to laugh, so please keep it up.

  18. What an adorable puppy! It had me going all cooey.

Quick question: Are we ever going to get a good old-fashioned straight-up “mirror universe” episode where the Atlantis expedition are invaders and everyone’s evil? I’d especially like to see Carson back…and evil. Because the whole psycho evil doctor thing is totally cool. (As I noted when I realized that Mirror Phlox was way cooler than Regular Phlox.) And maybe evil McKay could have some kind of cybernetic eye. And evil Weir could have a big scar on her face. And Shep could have a goatee. And Ronon could not have a goatee.

  19. Hey Joe! Long time no type. 😉

I’ve got a few questions if you’re in the mood to answer.

Will the fans get any kind of sneak peek at Season 4 beyond that preview video on the SG-1 site? In the past, SciFi’s done some fun behind the scene shows to set people up for the new year. Will we get that this year too? And I know I’ve asked before but is there any word on promo pictures for Season 4? Any chance we can get a preview of the new opening?

Also…regarding AoT and Continuum…will you all be releasing any kind of preview clips or promo pictures?

    Thank you!
    Mary Beth 🙂

  20. I agree! No more of Rachel’s “singing” She wants to sing, she should get off Atlantis. …. hey! there’s an idea. *off to start a petition cause it’s what all the cool kids do* “get rid of teyla”. sounds like a winner to me!

So Joe. Seeing Transformers? Any interest?

By the way, just so you know who I am, how were the hundreds of packets of Tim Tams you got in March of last year 😉

  21. That might be the cutest puppy I’ve ever seen. Ever. Awww…

I’m curious about where in Canada Rodney and Jeannie come from. Toronto or Vancouver? Or a less obvious place, like Moose Jaw or Edmonton?

  22. The French Bulldog is stinkin’ adorable.

Could we see a picture of Aloysius P. Hazzencockle? 😉

  23. Ho he’s cute! Love puppy. How long do you really think to resist, or in alternative how long do you think to say no to Fondy?
I’ve worked with a dog (no actor dog) this weekend for the movie, she was fantastic! I know the better for an actor is never be on stage with animals and babies… but here the dog was needed for the meaning of the this story and the conflit between antagonist and protagonist. Maybe we put on internt some backstage, I will put the link in the future, if you will be so nice to watch it, I will be very happy.

  24. *waves*

Bless Ali’s little cotton socks, the man’s such a trooper! Thanks for the clarification. I’m pleased to know that he’s found a place that he can call home. But, it has to be said, while the militants may not be around anymore, now he has to contend with the ‘bears’and I hear they can be quite viscious.;) I really hope dear sweet lil Ali, doesn’t come a cropper, and that he can last long enough to enjoy the fruits of your labours. If you don’t i’m sure the kiddies will! 😛

Oh, I know i’m rambling, so thought i’d finish it off with style. 😉

    *cough*

Oh yes I agree- I always ask my mother in law to bring some over when she vists from Athens!!!! Totally yummy!

How many s4 episodes will Keller be in?????????

  26. Hi Joe, greetings from Bulgaria! I have enjoyed your stories since you joined SG-1 crew and was pleased to see that you and Paul are showrunners ot Atlantis. I’m very excited about Season 4, not only because I read your blog ;), but also I felt winds of change when I saw “First Strike”. I saw it in early April (or was it end ot March) since I get the UK’s Sky One channel and they broadcast it earlier. I’m a little into filmmaking and television and it’s been a blast since 1997 when SG-1 premiered. It would be really nice if you get Season 5, because you deserve it. So, have a nice vacation and here’s an idea for a costume for the pug “you’re definitely not getting”.

  28. Here’s some questions that are probably right up your alley:

What is your absolute favorite part about producing a show like stargate atlantis? Which task do you dread the most?

    Cheers, Dani

  29. “Argentina, the land of kangaroos” perhaps you made a slight error there. Kangaroos belong down under, not in Argentina.”

Erm, I think he knows that – should have worked out by now what an evil sense of humour this man has and how he enjoys rattling the cages!!!

  30. Just a random thought that popped into my head while I was bored and sat on a ferry yesterday…

Avalon is on Earth, but Camalot is offworld. That would seem to imply that the adventures of King Arthur happened both on Earth, and offworld. However, around that time the Giza Stargate had been buried for several thousand years, and the Antarctic Gate was somewhat frozen. Did Merlin intervene somehow to make the Antarctic Gate usable by Arthur, did the Knights have to brave the cold every time they wanted to put tresure in Avalon, or is there a third ‘gate on Earth – the “Round Table”, perhaps?

  31. Any chance of an episode where the team goes threw the gate and comes out a cartoon? Just a thought.

  32. Wow. Does every Greek festival look exactly the same? That could have been Atlanta’s festival, down to the old lady pulling things out of coolers. Your food looks better, though.

So what’s the deal with the puppy? Is this yet another dog you’re not adopting? (P.S., Please send me Fondy’s powers of persuasion. She’s got skills.)

  33. Anonymous said: “UGH! It’s a scifi show, not American Idol.

PM can wrestle. JF excels at skiing. We didn’t see them doing that on the show, why do we always have to hear about Rachel singing?”

Well, now, if Joe F. can ski, I think there ought to be a “snowball Atlantis” episode.

Global climate change leads to Lantia suddenly freezing over. McKay, Sheppard and co. resort to skiing to the mainland because all the puddlejumpers are being utilized by the Atlantis crew as warm-up stations because Atlantis still has no ZedPM, and thus no central heating. (The Naquadah generators aren’t working because the components have frozen, or something).

McKay designs a giant coring device, and the team drills a series of large holes down to the mantle to release some geothermal (lantithermal?) energy, thus heating up the continent, and melting all the snow. (Hey, it’s a sci-fi show, not a science documentary).

Sheppard cracks jokes about The Core and The Day After Tomorrow, and McKay retorts with one-liners about Darkseid and Apokolips.

At the end, once Lantia is mostly liquid again, the team have a giant beach party, and Carson and Ronon wrestle while Sheppard surfs and Teyla sings.

Just think, it could be TV gold!

Or, you know, maybe not. 🙂

  34. Ohhhh such a beautiful Puppy Dog!

Is there any chance of fast shipping him/her to New Zealand?? lol

    NZJ

  35. Hey Joe,
Wondering if we will see more ‘exploring of Atlantis’ base episodes?

  36. Did you watch ‘FireFLy’ & ‘Serenity’?
What is your opinion of the show?

  37. Well, I hope that the good ratings of season finale mean that will be fifth season…
Speaking of troubles… one of the things that catch my attention is that, really, the ones that makes the calls (you, of course) seemed very surprised of all the fan-wank arouse by the changes.
I suppose some of you (Scifi-Channel, MGM, etc.) made some polls and study groups of the market before taking these decisions to raise the ratings, and that those told them to put a young blond, cute and talented lady and a very popular SG-1 character in to the Atlantis world in order to gain public. I suppose, even the studies always say what the ones which pay want to hear, of course… But Are you really fully surprised of the fuzz generates by killing two main cast characters at the same time? And add to this that one of the new cast member, Sam Carter, that she not only will directly replace Weir, the former leading lady of the show, but that she will also duplicate the functions of Sheppard and McKay, putting in danger the position of the two most popular Atlantis characters. Come on! I think that more than undoubtable, it was inevitable all fans doubts and wank came down, not?

  38. Er Dude, the matrix called….they wanttheir shades back.
I’m with VIKITTY on this one another puppy you’re not getting LOL you are SO screwed. I personally am planning on acquiring a Rottweiler to replace my eldest son when he finally takes the hint and moves out, honestly you’d think changing the locks and getting rid of his bed would’ve been hint enough!

  39. anonymous said: “UGH! It’s a scifi show, not American Idol.
PM can wrestle. JF excels at skiing. We didn’t see them doing that on the show, why do we always have to hear about Rachel singing?”

Firstly, the original poster (Amy) has the right to ask whatever she wants. If she wants to see Teyla singing, why wouldn’t she ask for it?

Secondly, I don’t have any problem as long as it doesn’t seem forced. It was very well done in Critical Mass, and it made sense plot-wise. I don’t see how a minute or so of a character singing makes the show less sci fi and more American Idol. She could sing again in another Athosian ceremony, or she could be singing at her quarters when someone knocks at her door. We’ve seen she was meditating when Ronon went to her quarters in Duet, for example. She could be singing instead of meditating next time. What’s the problem with that?
In the same say, we’ve seen John reading a book when someone goes to his quarters (Hide & Seek and Home come to my mind right now) and we’ve seen he has a guitar in many episodes (Conversion, McKay and Mrs Miller, The Return I, Tao of Rodney). Next time someone goes to see him, he could be playing his guitar instead of reading. Would you feel this would make it less sci fi and more American idol too?

If yes, how come a few seconds of meditating/reading is more sci fi than a few seconds of singing/playing an instrument?

  40. Anonymous said…

Dude, calm down. Last time she sang I felt it was completely appropriate for the episode. I just wanted to know if there would be another episode where she would sing. That does not make the show less scifi or more American Idol.

  41. You do realise Argentina is in South America, the land of the kangaroos is Australia and Nigeria is in Africa, right? If you do then sorry but if not then i just wanted to correct you…

  42. When I first saw the pic of you in the blue & white striped tent I thought, “Hmmm, that looks vaguely familiar.” By pic #3 I knew exactly where you were. Greekfest!

Many years ago, when I first started developing The Black Tower’s main characters, I decided I wanted my Canadian-born New York billionaire to be Greek. So, I started doing some research on Greek history, mythology, art, achitecture, food and wine…that’s when I developed a passion for all things Greek. Baclava is my favourite dessert, I eat Greek salad with feta 5 or 6 days a week, and indulge in a few shots of Ouzo on the weekends. And the men…Oiy! Greek men are the most fun-loving, passionate and articulate companions on a date. They’re also drop dead gorgeous (i.e. famed illusionist Criss Angel aka Christopher Sarantakos, and CBC’s George Stroumboulopoulos).

I go to the week-long Greekfest party here in Ottawa every August and pick up a few trinkets while I’m there. Handmade jewelry, hand-painted vases, religious artifacts and other works of art. One of these days, I’m actually going to take the time and spend a month or two in Greece, communing with the gods on Mount Olympus.

KJC (who is, at this very moment, listening to a CD of traditional Greek music while chowing down on a Greek salad)

  43. To the anonymous RCC interview loather… what are you talking about?? I thought it was a great interview with very interesting insights about the cancellation and the show mythology. I never would have guessed the Monday night stack was a key part of the non-renewal decision. And I appreciate RCC delving so deeply into the Ori mythology and story arcs. Thanks, RCC!

  44. OMG! Puglets are really, really cute…but French Bulldogs have to be the most adorable/pitiful-looking creatures on Earth. They just make you want to pick them up and snuggle.

So how in the world did you keep from tucking this FB “in need of a good home” in your pocket and taking it home?

    …err….or did you?

Is this another puppy you definitely won’t be getting? And it you don’t get it, will you still not be getting Kobe?

    WannaBe

  45. Awww, the puppy is so adorable! How can you resist that cute little face? Do you generally prefer smaller dogs, Joe, or is that Fondy’s preference?

Also, that baklava looks completely amazing. Was it good? Baklava one of my very favorite desserts. My friend’s mother caters and she makes the most delicious baklava. When she brought it for bakesales or community events, everyone would go nuts and it’d be gone in seconds. Yay for Greek cooking!

  46. I am going to send out letters to various philanthropists like yourself – “Save the Haggis” a highly endangered species from Scotland. We are neither near Argentina nor Australia.

The puppy looks gorgeous. I really hope SGA series 5/6/7/8 etc happen – you need to look after your ever growing family. 🙂

    Susan
    Carson Beckett land

    PS Haggis tastes disgusting.

  47. Damn, Baklava?? I haven’t had any in a long time. Talk about an absolutely sinful dessert. Yum! So have you ever had a slice of cheddar cheese with apple pie? If not, you think it would be something you’d try?

I’m not a dog fan, but the little black bulldog is a cutie. So how many additional pups will you ‘not’ be getting now?

  48. Ah, just think, next season we will have Teyla cooing to her beautiful, miracle Sheppard twins every week! Wow, imagine how exciting that will be!

  49. I just noticed on IMDB that you wrote an episode of Lassie. Did you get to meet the star of the show?

Is it true that he had a wig type bit to hide his boy bits? That is just too weird.

Did he/she ever fluff her lines?

You are lucky – you wrote for Lassie and know superstar Mars!

  50. Wow, who new a villain in the making could be so compationate. Giving away your hard earned winnings to the orphans! Kuddos to you good sir.

Ah, its just so sad sarcasm is lost on today’s youth, I’m looking at your Anonymous!

    On to the questions:
1 ) Have you seen any good anime lately?
2A) Are you a fan of Iron Man?
2B) What are your thoughts on the upcoming Iron Man film?
3 ) Any plans to include story from the more alien races? (Gadmeer, Energy-entity, foothold aliens, furlings, Serrakin, etc.)

Oh God, yes! You’re a genius, Anonymous! Boy, you sure get around…not that I’m saying you’re loose, or anything… Hang on a minute. Let’s make Lizzie preggers too, she could be having triplets, then there’d be a complicated love triangle. Which way would Sheppard turn? Who would be his true love? Zzzzzzzz, oops, fell asleep, sorry!

  54. Love the pics Joe. We just took in a 5 week old kitten that was abandoned on our property. How anybody could do that is beyond me. Our kids have already made numerous trips to the pet store to buy him everything that he could possibly need. He is going to be one very spoiled kitten with lots of attention…. that’s the way it should be.

  55. cheeky lil devil ….

Have a “ruff” day, Cheeky? You are usually better at this.

    🙂

  56. Which way would Sheppard turn? Who would be his true love?

We all know Sheppard/McKay is the one, true ship on SGA, but make way for season 4, as Ronon/Teal’c should be hot! ;o)

2.)What was your favorite episode of Season 10 of SG-1?
3.)What about season 3 of Atlantis?

  60. Ah, my timing is flawless. Here is (GASP) a song parody, certain to entertain music lovers and aggravate music-haters.

For this one, envision a background character, perhaps Chuck, singing this to the tune of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s song “Some Enchanted Evening” from ‘South Pacific’.

    Some Atlantis Evening

    Some Atlantis evening
We may see a hive ship
We may see a hive ship
    Across the cloudy sky
    And somehow we fight
    We fight and remain
And hope we won’t see wraith again and again.

    Some Atlantis evening
    Someone may be scheming
    Sensors may detect them
    From light years far away
    And time after time
    Attack though they may
With cloak and with shield we will keep them at bay.

What can we do, we cannot hold out long.
What can we do, our power’s almost gone.

    Some Atlantis evening
When we’ve seen a hive ship
    When we’ve fired upon it
    Across the cloudy sky
    We’ll fly up inside
    And set off a bomb
Or all humans from this world may soon be gone.

What have we done, there’s more wraith on the way.

  61. You’ve not eaten Baklava until you have eaten it at dusk in a little Taverna in Corfu over looking the Aegean Sea with a glass of cold Retsina.
When I first went to the island of Corfu with my then husband, the taxi driver taking us from the airport to out hotel told us “You drink Ouzo you have plenty of children!” Yes you guessed nine months later I had a bouncing baby girl.
We went to the island of Malta for our next holiday never spoke to the taxi drivers there. Didn’t want to tempt fate.
I would recommend a trip to Greece the Greek people are very warm and friendly.

  62. Ohhh, baclava… My mum makes awesome baclava (yes, I know – a German who cooks non-blande food; shocking, no?) and there’s a Lebanese place downtown that sells it. I get a piece whenever I head down for a felafel. Ever tried felafel? Very, very good.

And as an aside, regarding Jace’s comment above… the Round Table = a Stargate? That’s so ingenious… What do you think, Joe? Would it make sense? I think it’s a splendid idea…

Also, re: the Matouk’s hot sauce… I plan on waiting until you are back from hiatus before I get it to you, just to be certain you get the package. It’s very much worth it too, you won’t be dissapointed.

  63. Hmmm… sorry to correct you, but the only kangaroos you can find here in Argentina are in the zoo, lol…

  64. What edition of “war and peace” is Shep reading (ISBN if possible)? want to buy it and thought it would be fun to buy the same edition as in Atlantis season 1 “home”.
