2026 off to a slow reading start, but I did enjoy this book…

A Thousand Blues by Cheon Seon-ran (2026 translation)

Two sisters work to reunite a discarded robot jockey and his doomed race horse for one final ride.

My thoughts: Unlike anything I’ve ever read.  Sad and sweet.

Meanwhile, the Korean movie marathon continues…

Film #3: The Chaser (2008)

A disgraced ex-policeman who runs a small ring of prostitutes finds himself in a race against time when one of his women goes missing.

My thoughts: I loved the main character but thought they could have done a better job exploring his relationship with the young girl he takes under his wing.  I also though the pacing was great but felt the decision to go with the darker ending was the wrong way to go.

Film #4: Miracle in Cell No. 7 (2013)

A story about the love between a mentally-ill father and his lovingly adorable daughter.

My thoughts: This one apparently won a bunch of awards and was remade in other countries, but I found it unbearably cornball.

Film #5: Broken (2014)

A man becomes a fugitive from the police after he kills one of the men who raped and murdered his daughter.

My thoughts: This one was an edge-of-your-seat nail biter.  The ending, while a fair commentary on the judicial system, left me feeling…torn.
