We were so exhausted that we ended up going to sleep a little later than our regular 10:00 p.m. ET bedtime – which was approximately 7:30 p.m. local time – and woke up this morning at approximately 6:30 a.m. PT. Akemi slept those 11 hours straight (!) while I kept awakening, sometimes abruptly, every time Sharky shifted for fear he would tumble off this unfamiliar bed. I think that approximately two-thirds of those instances were actual dream-state imagings that saw me sit bolt upright and reach out to rescue Sharky – who was sitting sound asleep beside me.
We took a morning stroll, checked out The Grove farmer’s market, Whole Foods (where Akemi got herself a croissant), a spot called Sidecar Donuts where I enjoyed their seasonal banana bread latte and their Butter & Salt donut fresh out of the fryer.
Both were delicious.
We returned to our hotel room where I reviewed the notes from yesterday’s Stargate’s writers’ room session (which I missed because I was traveling). Martin has requested everyone to submit their ranked choices for the episodes they would like to write which, I thought, was very cool of him.
For lunch, we met with our good friends Kevin and Elle. Kevin was our neighbor for many years before his move to L.A., a version of Seinfeld’s Kramer who would pop in now and again for a drink or a chat. Akemi would always send him off with goodies – leftovers, treats, a coffee foamer – and has really missed his ever-affable presence.
After lunch, we went back to their place for drinks, then back to the hotel room for football. With Sharky.
First full day in L.A. complete!

I’ve never seen a doughnut where you could almost put your fist through the hole. That looks amazing!
Oh yes same thoughts ^^ Sure to fill up sweettooth craving for many smaller bellies.
I want Akemi’s donut.
That sounds like an awesome first day! It’s great you have friends there already.
I’ve been following Chef Gruel from The Calico Fish House and the food looks really good. Any chance you’ll stop by there? https://calico-restaurant.com/ I have no idea if that’s close to you. FYI, Chef Gruel’s turkey brine is very tasty! https://x.com/ChefGruel/status/1718786487335174273?s=20
I hope you start relaxing and rest well!
Happy Sharky Sunday!
Alas, an hour drive from where we’re staying.
Very nice first day, Joseph! You and Akemi are such a beautiful couple!
