11 hours in to our 24 hour poll and Window of Opportunity is showing why it is the #1 seed in the tournament, opening up a huge lead over its opponent in this round, Urgo.

If you haven’t voted yet, click the link or head on over to twitter and cast your ballot.

Tomorrow, #2 seed The Fifth Race faces off against surprising #15 seed Solitudes.  I have a feeling this one’s going to be much closer.  Could there be an upset in the making?

I’m thinking that, once we get down to our Final Four, we should do a mass fan re-watch of our semi-finalists.  What do you think?

Lately on twitter, I’ve avoided all of the political discourse in favor of the far more heated debate on fried chicken sandwiches that has pitted Wendy’s and Popeye’s in online battle.  Coincidentally, two weeks, Business Insider taste-tested fried chicken sandwiches from eight different fast-food chains, and THIS WAS THE RESULT.

I am…unconvinced.  So much so that I think I’m going to do my own taste-testing of the eight candidates.  Maybe sometime next week?  Who’s in?!

Another big story today is the news that Disney and Sony couldn’t agree on a deal, thus putting Spider-Man on the outs in the MCU.  Frustrating for longtime fans, yes, but there’s a silver lining in that this opens the door to the long-overlooked Japanese Spider-Man from the 1970’s.  I mean, who doesn’t remember THIS – ?

No?  Are you sure?  Come on, have some respect.  He fought a transformer!

Lately, I’ve been a little…exhausted.  I’ve been averaging about four hours of sleep a night and have now resorted to sipping chamomile tea before bedtime.  I’ve cut out my afternoon espresso zabaglione and keep my melatonin pills handy.  And still, it takes me forever to fall asleep – only to not stay asleep for long.  So, what sure-fire remedies would you all suggest for sleeplessness?

  1. Just an opinion, I prefer the chick-fila chicken sandwich because I’m not interested in the lettuce and tomato with them. However, the Sonic Crispy Chicken sandwich I had the other day was most satisfying with mayo, lettuce n tomato

  2. I read the same chickensandwich article and afterward my wife and I went to Popeyes to see what all of the fuss was about. Our chicken was crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside, but the crust had a slightly over-fried taste to it. It wasn’t burnt, but it had a slight “brown roux” taste to it. I didn’t think there were enough pickles and the sauce is mayonnaise-based and was slathered on far too heavily. I’d leave off the sauce, order extra pickles, and hope the over-cooked taste was a one-off. So far, between Wendy’s, Chick-fil-A, and Popeyes both my wife and I agree that Wendy’s Spicy Chicken Sandwich is the best, Chick-fil-A makes 2nd place, while Popeyes brings up the rear. To be clear, Chick-fil-A only gets that rating because I’ve got the taste for it burned into my DNA. Objectively I’d say it’s the worst sandwich of the three, but there’s something about a Chick-fil-A that calls to me occasionally.

I have tried many, many things to curb my insomnia to no real avail. I used to take a couple of Xanax each night before bedtime, but recently decided that wasn’t a productive path. Now I’m also sleeping no more than 4 hours at a stretch and that’s usually between 3 and 7 am give or take. While it hasn’t been tested, mainly because it’s currently impossible, I think I have the perfect, and possibly only, cure for insomnia: Age backward.

Sorry I couldn’t be more help. Do you think I’d still have insomnia if I had a solution?

  3. Joe,
I ran out of my usual, “non-drowsy” antihistamine (loratidine) last month. Used certrizine at night for a few weeks, as well as my usual melatonin. My sleep duration and depth seemed to improve, but my allergies weren’t as well controlled.

    Your mileage may vary.

  4. I’ve been having the “wake in the middle of the night and take hours to get back to sleep” middle age issues as well. Sometimes Aleve helps, other times a shot of whiskey or bourbon helps (and sometimes both 😉 ).

It doesn’t seem to matter how much caffeine I’ve had or how strenuous my day was. Melatonin helps a little but nothing seems to be the silver bullet. Add in frequent time-shifting trips to the west coast and Europe, and I think I’m doomed sleep-wise.

If you find a solution, I’m all ears…

  5. Re: falling asleep… Get ready for bed, comfy PJs, herbal tea (if preferred), climb into bed with a book, and read IN THE DARK with a tiny book light or a dimmed, back-lit e-reader. And make sure your feet are Warm, not cold! 😊 It may take an hour at first, but the trick is to do this Every Night. Seriously. Then after a while it’s only half an hour — or 2 pages! fer cryin out loud — and you’ll be zonking out. And then congratulations, you’ve trained your brain how to fall asleep. 😴 😴 😴
The trick is, you have to read IN THE DARK. 🌔🌓🌒🌚🌌 Nighty night!

  6. P.S.! If/when you wake up & can’t return to sleep, repeat the falling asleep routine. Also, I forgot… sometimes it helps to put a really warm fabric, microwavable rice-filled bag behind your neck, after getting into bed. Maybe another one for whatever aches. Makes everything relax, from head to toe. 😴

  7. I voted for WOO. Urgo is good but it’s no WOO.

I’m up to season 3 of my SG-1 rewatch. Definitely keen to join in one rewatch of the semi-finalists!

Given that the big three are probably the only fried chicken brands I’m likely to find in Australia and the fact that next week I’ll be in a rain forest in northern Queensland I’m going to have to pass on the fried chicken testing.

  8. I’m on my main computer for a change instead of my phone. My screen on my phone is about 3 x 5 inches; easy for Twitter or Facebook, but not happy with WordPress and it doesn’t like my password.

I’m in for a rewatch if I’m not working! I just can’t vote. I’m sorry. I can’t make a decision about favorites. Maybe if it is a night I’m not working I (maybe Tom) can man the Stargate Twitter account (poor man takes care of that feed all by himself probably since we stopped our tweetstorm (and Dark Matter unless I rarely pop in).

Do you have a Popeyes up there? Overnighting chicken sandwiches wouldn’t be recommended (although I would help ya out if you wanted to try it).

I’m sorry you are having the same issues I am having. Although I beat you because one night I got a half-hour. Last night I slept one hour, woke up for 1-1/2 hours and then slept 3 hours (forgetting my night guard, ugh). My health food store owner recommended this Emerald brand doctor-formulated sleep health. It had Suntheanine L-theanine, passionflower extract 4:1, European lemon balm. You can take 2 capsules 30-60 minutes before bedtime on an empty stomach and up to 4 capsules total. It seemed to help nights 1 and 2 (night 2 I had to go up to 4). But then, nothing. Last two nights I’ve taken two 5 mg tablets of fast dissolving melatonin (melts in your mouth, strawberry flavor) and 2 capsules of L-theanine (150 mg) so similar to the other minus the passionflower and lemon balm.

In the mid-1990’s, my friend down the street had these goggles where I would put them on (eyes closed) and it had different patterns of light and colors of light that you can program for many things, and one was for sleep. It actually worked for me. Many times I would wake up with the goggles on. But most of the time I was able to take off the goggles before actually nodding off. I wish I could remember what they were. They were ridiculously big though.

This insomnia is really a huge problem. My body is having trouble healing; I’m having memory issues; I get overwhelmed quickly; I can’t focus. Thing is I’m not generally napping during the day. I went to a sleep medicine doctor. They wanted to do a sleep study but I told them I have issues with the idea of someone watching me all night. Like a lab rat. I definitely did not sleep the last time they tried this 20+ years ago (yes, I’ve been dealing with insomnia since Patrick was born). In fact, at 4 a.m. they told me to go home. They have a home kit. I thought for sure they were going to hook me up to brain electrodes (why else would they need Jeff to come to know about “placement”?) It is something you put around your chest, a finger oximetry for pulse rate I think and a nasal cannula that measures sleep apnea. That’s the night I slept 1/2 hour. I wrote a note in the unit when I returned it that if they didn’t get enough data to please call me and let me know and maybe we can do it again. The battery is only good for one night. Never heard. So I called today and they said the sleep apnea was labeled “inconclusive” and we are going to try one more time because my co-pay for my insurance for this is expensive. But I’m upset about the no electrodes on my head to figure out what my brain waves are doing. They can do that portable. Patrick had a 48-hour EEG when he was 8. It took us 2 hours and three people but we got them on his head and wrapped him all up so he couldn’t touch them. Then the doctor said to see him back in 6 weeks. Six weeks? Obviously he has never had years of crummy sleep.

  9. BTW, Patrick had some terrible insomnia. They put him on clonidine 0.1 mg before bedtime (it is usually used for hypertension but it is used for insomnia, too. It worked. His body got used to 0.1 mg to they bumped it up to 0.2 mg and he’s doing great on that dose. I might ask them to try this for me, too.

  10. There’s no Shake Shacks in Utah, but all the others are around here. I simply have not found a good crispy chicken sandwich I like. They’re all too salty for me. I could try Popeye’s, but not sure why I would bother when on Thursdays I can get excellent chicken and waffles at Pig and A Jelly Jar for $5. Life is too short for fast food.

  11. Canada legalized recreational marijuana in 2018. Just sayin’. It’s still illegal here in NJ. Regardless of that, I started using it for sleep about 2 years ago and I can’t argue with the results. Just to be clear, I despise being stoned, but I now sleep through the night.

  12. I agree with Jimfromjersey. I haven’t tried the CBD oil yet and I want too. I can understand why M. Jackson went so such lengths to get a good night’s rest. Of course, he did go to the extreme but insomnia will drive you insane!

I haven’t tried Popeye’s or Wendy’s sandwich yet. I can attest to Chick fil-la having a good spicy chicken sandwich. Those are my meat cheap days. 😉
