Hard to believe that eight years ago was the last time a new episode of Stargate aired. On May 9, 2011 Stargate: Universe’s “Gauntlet” closed out an incredible unbroken 364 episode, two movie, 17 season, 14 year run. Back when my former writing partner and I joined the franchise for SG-1’s fourth season, we assumed we were jumping aboard near ride’s end. We were told the show would go one more year before ending with its fifth and final season. Oh, how wrong they were.
Of course, in t.v., things have a way of changing. Usually for the worst but, occasionally for the better. Much better. We got another season. Then another season after that. And then one more. And another one. And another. And one more. Then five seasons of Atlantis. And two of Universe. Why? Well, credit the cast and crew and writers but, mostly, credit the fans who kept us going and, who made clear during last year’s tweetstorm, that they’re still around and hankering for an all-new series. As I’ve often said, it’s not a matter of if and but when. It doesn’t make sense for MGM to sit on this valuable franchise for too long, and I’m sure they just want to make sure they’re going to do it right. And by right, I mean offering a new series that can serve as a jumping on point for new viewers while rewarding longtime fans protective of the franchise, its characters, and canon. Yes, I know, it would seem the way to go is obvious, so I’m going to assume they’ll figure it out sooner than later and reward long-suffering Stargate fans with their equivalent of a Star Trek Picard revival series rather than, say, that 2001 Planet of the Apes reboot.
Man, nothing hurts a franchise like an ill-advised reboot. Am I right?
You are totally right. I wish I had your confidence that they will do ANYTHING, let alone the right thing, though.

I’ve been thinking of organizing a mail campaign, especially towards people working in the Scripted TV development department. People are understandably frustrated. A massive following and still crickets from MGM… about time for the fan movement to spell out “WHAT GIVES?” to MGM.
If Brad scored a deal and invited you back, would you and Akemi relocate? That is — Assuming the production would be back in Vancouver.

I don’t think I can wait for ‘when’ as TV is drying up for me. I’ve watch everything I consider to be good (at least in the science fiction space). It’s saddening and rather disappointing that a few decades ago TV was full of fantastic, long running and well written Sci-Fi shows. And now we get the likes of ‘Stargate Origins’ which was utterly terrible. At least with Discovery and The Orville (and a sprinkling of others) we are starting to see a return to TV for Science Fiction. So there is hope! I doubt it will be long before MGM hops aboard that bandwagon. It looks like the series you are currently working on will be ripe in time for what I am hoping is the revival of Sci-Fi. There is my opinion on the matter anyway, I might be wrong. We will see.
Yes you are very right. For me S Universe was incredible so I wish they would follow that up. But I gather the majority preferred SG1 and Atlantis type of style ?
Those clips up there from Stargate Universe of the ship shutting down ALWAYS reminds me of the brilliant Joel Goldsmith and his hauntingly beautiful final masterpiece on Universe. That was so awesome and memorable, I went to You Tube to hear it again. SG Universe would be a great show to reboot because they are still “out there” you know. Waiting. Just like us fans. Waiting.
I watch very little new programming now. Only NCIS and Blue Bloods. I’ve officially turned into an old white lady. (Didn’t think I’d hit this level of fuddy-duddy before I turned 60, but there it is…)
To add to my old white lady image, the remainder of my viewing pleasure is divided between Acorn and BritBox. Midsomer Murders, Poirot, Murdoch Mysteries, Death in Paradise, Inspector Morse, The Last Detective, Agatha Raisin, Hamish Macbeth, Vera, Shetland, Cadfael, Dalziel & Pascoe, Father Brown, Jonathan Creek, Sherlock Holmes, Maigret, Miss Marple, Rosemary & Thyme, Doctor Blake, Waking the Dead, Brokenwood Mysteries, Miss Fisher, Queens of Mystery, Foyle’s War…and so many more! I am in heaven with my cozy mysteries, and every now and then I dip my toe into the more serious ‘gritty’ stuff…but I always return to the cozies! And I really like watching series that are over and done…no cancellation disappointment for me! Now, please pardon me while I put the kettle on and fetch a plate of biscuits.

There are an awful lot of Stargate fans and WE definitely would like to see the show continue. Some how Some way, PLEASE, get this figured out. The FANS are WAITING!!

Wow, 8 years??? I’ve followed Stargate for so long, it’s hard for me to quantify the timeline. I’m looking forward to the new iteration, whatever it may be. And here’s to hoping it doesn’t suck.
I am all about franchise reboots this year; Sabrina, Charmed, Roswell, Discovery, She-Ra. I can’t imagine what new Stargate would look like but it’s the perfect time for a new show about military UFO adventures to join Project Blue Book, Rendlesham and Roswell. I can’t get into Twilight Zone though; after Black Mirror I expect a lot more from an anthology show.
I liked what I saw of Stargate Origins.
Lets hope something comes of this, i would love a return of some version of the original shows, upgraded but familiar.

I’m with Das, my viewing habits have changed. If MGM does another Stargate, I hope they think about the alternative viewing choices out. I watched TV with my Mom last weekend (she still has Satellite), and it was difficult sitting through the commercials. I’m one happy cord cutter.
BTW, Stargate Universe had great special effects! Such a pretty show.

Stargate is a ground breaking Sci-Fi franchise that is extremely valuable and just as genius as The other two “Star – ” franchises. It was such a huge disappointment to have Universe end so prematurely and I know that the fans are anxiously awaiting another installment that picks up where that left off. There are so many low quality, less worthy shows on television in the US and Canada. Veteran actors of the show are all available for a comeback to Stargate. Having a command with members from both SG-1 and Atlantis would be stellar and gain millions of new fans. I am so excited to read articles like this that predict another series and/or movies for the future. I happened to catch the latest mini-series of shorts that chronicle Catherine as a young woman and the events surrounding her father’s discovery of the gates in Egypt. I’m sure only super fans of Stargate will know what I’m referring to. I can’t wait for more!
Leonard Nimoy remarked that Science Fiction is very expensive to make and is disliked by TV executives for that reason. Shows get cancelled for reasons that are not connected with characters or plot. The reason the crew ‘beams down’ in Star Trek is that this avoids the very expensive special effect of having the ship land on the planet. It has to be observed that as any Science Fiction series progresses, there is a need for more expensive special effects to keep the viewers hooked, but that leads to the show being over budget and cancellation. It also has to be noted that many Science Fiction shows lose the modesty of the original series. The crew become icons, the aliens become gods and cannot be afforded within a TV show budget!
