Apologies for not checking in sooner.  I’ve been out of commission today, sick and sleeping off what I assume to be a touch of food poisoning.   Was it the curry ramen?  A fried oyster?  The lychee sake that tasted like dish washing soap?  I’ll avoid a Murder on the Orient Express gag here out of respect for spoilerphobes, but let me be clear – it WAS one of them.

Anyway, following my four hour mid-afternoon nap, I jumped online and discovered the Dark Matter Council was in the midst of another fabulous twitter campaign, perhaps my favorite yet –

September 21, 2017: Let’s Do A Dark Matter Mailbag!

I’m amazed by all of you who were inspired by many of the same mainstays of sci-fi that led me down this road.  Asimov, Clarke, Ellison, Alien, The ThingPlanet of the Apes, Star Trek: The Original Series…to name but a few.

I’m also touched and grateful to those of you who mentioned my name and my work, alongside those of my incredible cast and crew, as one of the things you love about Dark Matter.

Tomorrow night, we launch another tweet storm (9 pm EDT/6 pm PDT) to batter twitter…and whoever you care to tag with our deluge of ten of thousands of tweets!  Who, hunh?  Who, HUNH?!  WHO?!!  Follow @DarkMatterFTL for all the latest and tomorrow’s secret hashtag!

But before we storm the castle yet again, I’m going to dedicate this blog to you, the fans, and your healthy curiosity.  Got some burning questions about the campaign, yours truly, or anything Dark Matter-related?  Well post them in the comments section because I’ll be wading in with answer, ANSWERS, ANSWERS!!!

Dark Matter Playback Operator Greg Whiteside meanwhile (follow him here: @Videogreg1) has sent me a slew of Dark Matter-related graphics!  I’ll be tweeting them out throughout the event!

  1. “What about each of the main cast members caught your attention and led to them being cast?”

Besides being incredibly talented and genuinely nice (I personally place great weight on the latter), they were all funny in different ways. At its heart, the show – and these characters – possess an undercurrent of humor that allows audience to really connect with them.

  2. Feel free to disregard this question if the answer is a potential spoiler but since we were first introduced to the ‘Mirror’ Raza crew I’ve been curious about what happened to Five in the other universe. Was there ever a plan to revisit that in a potential season four or five?

Yes, there was a back-up story related to alt FIVE I had in my back pocket. It ultimately depended on whether or not I had the opportunity to tell this particular story.

      1. Thanks for the answer Joe. Part of me thinks it would be cool if the alt FIVE was a true opposite of the one we’ve gotten to know. Maybe the ruthless head of a corporation.

Thank you for all your hard work. I’ll keep tweeting and putting the word out in the hopes it has some chance of getting us more Dark Matter.

  3. Dear Mr. Mallozzi,
Hope you’re feeling better soon! I had 2 questions…I am so worried that this last chance will fall through and hope we can help make a difference.
    1. when will you get an update on Dark Matter from the final suitor?
    2. Is there anything we the fans can do to help encourage them to make this happen?
Thank you as always for your kindness and honesty with us! We love your work!

      1. Hey, Scott. It could take up to a month to know if this miniseries proposal is going to fly.

      2. Keep doing what you’ve been doing. Make noise online. It makes a huge difference.

  4. I have a question about the android that I hope is alright to ask? Anyway, Do you think she would have chosen her own name in the future? Like Seven or whatever number she prefers?

I’m so grateful to you and your blog and all that you do for us fans. I’ve never felt more included than I have since I’ve joined this show and its fandom. So thank you for every thing. Live long and Raza. 🙂

Well, she has learned she has a name – Suki – and the plan is to work it into her story. I have a lot of fun developments planned for her!

Hey, Leigh, thank you for taking the time to join us.

      1. Awesome! Thank you for answering! I was curious if she would accept that as a name or if she’d choose differently like the rest of the Raza crew so that’s definitely good to know.
I hope I get to see those developments!

Thank you so much for your reply.

  5. I have no concept of these things and possibly it may be privileged information but in case there is an answer that can be given; What level of funding is required to produce series 4 and could it even be done from a legal point of view if the funds were available?

    1. “I have no concept of these things and possibly it may be privileged information but in case there is an answer that can be given; What level of funding is required to produce series 4 and could it even be done from a legal point of view if the funds were available?”

They say Game of Thrones has a budget of about 10 million/episode. I’ll just say we’re significantly less than a third of that.

  6. Sorry to hear you’ve been dickie. Maybe the food/drink you suggest – me thinks it’s the stress and upset you’re going through.
Please take care n feel fit soon

Feeling dickie? Is that an English turn of phrase? Okay, I’ll take it! Thanks.

  7. OK, Boss. One question I’ve always wondered about that applies to many characters on many shows:

Was killing off One part of the original plan, or was the death of One a change brought on by contract, personality, other offers, or what (if you even CAN discuss such things, as both you and he are professionals whose public conduct towards each other and all cast/crew is founded on a balance of professional reputation and trust, even during disagreements)?

Follow-up: IF killing One off was part of a larger planned event, would Corso make a return to the storyline in S04 or S05?

I know this could create spoilers, should the very best possible outcome happen…. But please, feel free to tease us. I think we’ve all both earned it, and can take it 😀

As I’ve already mentioned elsewhere, the killing off of ONE was not part of my original plan and was not brought on by contract, personality, or other offers. Marc Bendavid is a fantastic actor and friend and if I had my way, would still be on the show. It was a battle I fought but didn’t win – that I still regret. As for why? A desire to shake things up.

I actually wanted to bring Marc back for an episode in season 3 but, due to a scheduling conflict, had to scrap the story and come up with another script in short notice – what turned out to be Episode 309, “Isn’t That A Paradox?”

  8. Good afternoon Joseph,
2 Things if you don’t mind:
    1. Can you kindly release the tune that has played in the series as a backdrop to illuminate grief, dismemberment of family, and enlightenment? The tune last played during 6’s most recent encounter with his biological son, and then when Nyx grieved over the separation from her brother in the prior season. No issues compensating or purchasing the track itself either…
    2. Should the show get renewed, I would offer my services in any capacity shape or form and donate any form of compensation to CFF. Whether you seek support in the creative outlet or in the operational sector…I got you.

Thank you, while your artistic abilities may not reach ‘millions’ or ‘hit certain metrics’ I can promise you it touches a hell of a lot more. Any faults with Dark Matter is a testament to lack of SyFy’s marketing capability, and not the collective talent of your entire team. Truly is one of the best television series in recent history, thank you for working so hard and composing the best part of my week!

      1. I’ve reached out to Dark Matter composer Ben Pinkerton about putting out a soundtrack and, just this morning, he responded that he was going to do something online for the fans. Stay tuned.

      2. Hey Cameron, thanks so much for the offer. And thank you so much for the kind words.

  9. Well, I’m thinking in the worst scenario, and, in case the show is not renewed… what is the plan? have you think in some way to finish the story? maybe a book? (it would be amazing!)

Thanks once again for all your efforts, enthusiasm and for keeping us so well informed!

    1. “Well, I’m thinking in the worst scenario, and, in case the show is not renewed… what is the plan? have you think in some way to finish the story? maybe a book? (it would be amazing!)

      Hi Martha,

Thank YOU for supporting the show.

As I mentioned, if the miniseries is a no-go, I’d prefer to finish the story in comic book form. While the idea of a book (or a book series) is intriguing, I have neither the time, patience, or talent to do what so many of my favorite authors are able to deliver with regularity.

        1. “Follow-up question: What about an on-line Motion Comic, similar to the HALO video game mini-series? Bring in the original cast to do voice-over. 🙂”

Hmmm. To be honest, I’m not familiar with this.

      1. I was going to mention this, too. Unlike the tv show funding, which is needed too quickly for a crowdfunding campaign to possible or effective, comic book campaigns can be VERY successful, and there would be more runway to raise funds, ect.

        1. “I was going to mention this, too. Unlike the tv show funding, which is needed too quickly for a crowdfunding campaign to possible or effective, comic book campaigns can be VERY successful, and there would be more runway to raise funds, ect.”

We wouldn’t need to crowdfunding as Dark Horse Comics owns the comic book rights to Dark Matter.

  10. Hi Joe,

What has been your favorite moment and the hardest moment to write Dark Matter thus far?

Also if the worst happens and Dark Matter isn’t picked up, what’s next for both the series and yourself?

    Hope you feel better soon!

    1. “Hi Joe,

      Hi Nina,

      Thank you.

Favorite moment? So many. The first day of shooting, watching the actors in character. Watching the the director’s edit of the pilot and having that final twist land. Every time I would put out a new script and go down to set and see the cast at their chairs, madly reading them by the light of their phones.

The hardest are always the character deaths: Nyx, Devon, and ONE. Even Misaki, who was a villain…but WHAT A VILLAIN!

If we’re unable to land the miniseries, I may reach out to Dark Horse Comics about finishing the story where it started.

As for what’s next – I’ve been taking meetings. I have pilots to go out with and have been invited to work on a number of amazing projects. But first, I think I’d take some time off.

    1. “No question just wanted to say I hope you are feeling better.”

      Awww, thanks.

On the bright side, I’ll be fitting back into my suits in no time!

  11. Hi! Anything more we can do on our end to help the cause? I know some people were asking if a crowdfunding campaign would help… Also, while I’m asking questions, any clues you can give as to what adventures you had thought up for the Raza crew? Thanks!

Those tweet storms help more than you know!

As for a crowdfunding campaign, we’re investigating all avenues but this one isn’t as easy as it seems.

As for new adventures: The war against the aliens, the burgeoning Android rebellion, the crew becoming Agents of The Galactic Authority. Oh, and wrapping up that ONE storyline.

  12. Hey Joe, glad you are on the mend from Tummy Tsnumani 2017. Hopefully, the mini-series wrap-up option for Dark Matter is a thing, but if not – any chance you’d go full circle and finish the story as a comic book/graphic novel? And if so, please don’t change the Android back to the original gender – I lurves my Zobot! 🙂

    1. If we can’t give the fans a proper ending via a miniseries, I’d certainly consider pitching Dark Horse miniseries or two season wrap-up.

And, it goes without saying that the story would be a continuation of Episode 313 with the crew you all know and love.

  13. Hi Joe!

I’m still hoping/praying like crazy that Dark Matter receives a new home because I love the show and I need my questions answered! Haha! I know people have asked this before, but is it possible to get some mercandise like T-shirts, bags, mugs, etc. for the show? I would love to have something as a memorabilia for Dark Matter, especially if the show is not able to find a new home ! Thanks!

Also, you gave us the pilot script of DM. Is that white script the official script used or is there a blue script, pink script, etc. that was used instead? As someone who is learning the art of scriptwriting, I realize that there are many different drafts. I was wondering which color denotes each draft of a script?

For some reason, the production company is frustratingly reticent to put out merchandise. Maybe they believe there’s no money in it. I don’t know.

The white script is the official script distributed to the cast at the beginning of prep. Along the way, changes will be made as we head toward production. If you like, and you can remind me, I’ll post the final shooting draft if you’d like to compare.

As for what color denotes what stage, a lot of the time it depends on the production. I wrote about it back in my Stargate days:

      https://josephmallozzi.wordpress.com/2008/03/10/march-10-2008/

        1. “Damn. That would be cool. I assume since you’d be putting it “in the wild” like that, you’d have no objections to my using them together as an example in one of my Video Production courses I teach?”

          Feel free.

      1. I would love to see the final shooting draft! Please post it when you get the chance! Thank you so much!

        Best,
        Alex

  14. You’ve always said you had a 5-year plan for Dark Matter (which I know can be a selling point to get your show produced), but when you build a universe like Dar Matter, there’s tons of stories that hang around the fringe. Did you have ideas for future stories, side stories, etc?

I’ll be greedy and ask a 2nd question, aside from the changes you made in character descriptions due to brilliant casting, is there anything you changed in your planned story because of how well the cast played their roles?

    1. “You’ve always said you had a 5-year plan for Dark Matter (which I know can be a selling point to get your show produced), but when you build a universe like Dar Matter, there’s tons of stories that hang around the fringe. Did you have ideas for future stories, side stories, etc?

I have answers to all the questions, conclusions to those side stories as well as a few of them will dovetail into the bigger stories. Of course, there may side stories that fans would prefer had ended differently…

The biggest change was the character of ONE and his storyline. In the original plan, he was supposed to still be with us – and, while his death did make for a shocking turn, I wasn’t happy about making this change. Marc Bendavid, who played ONE, is a terrific guy, very talented, and I loved his portrayal.

  15. Growing up did you always want to be a part of and create syfy stories and families or was it something you just kinda fell into?

    1. “Growing up did you always want to be a part of and create syfy stories and families or was it something you just kinda fell into?”

Definitely no to “syfy” stories, but sci-fi = yes! 🙂 I grew up reading comic books, SF from the grandmasters, sci-fi movies – and continue to do so. I always wanted to work in sci-fi but didn’t think I ever would…until Paul and I landed a staff position on Stargate: SG-1.

  16. Glad you are feeling better, should the last big IF not work out, would you have any interest down the line of trying to finish or tell the rest of Dark Matter’s story as an animated series with the cast doing VO, assuming they’d be down for that? This would be in addition to or perhaps instead of a stand alone comic should that be your choice.

I ask because while I can’t begin to explain how the completion of the story in any format like comic books, would be so joyously welcome. I can’t help but have a hangup as I think you’ve more than once relayed in interviews, to having the ‘show’ complete and to me an animated mini-series of X episodes is as close to the ‘show’ as we might hope to get outside of the show completing with the two seasons it deserves.

Thanks again for all your efforts, the cast, the crew and the engagement with the fans as well as all your previous work that we’ve all enjoyed.

I actually got my start in animation and, while I have much respect for the field, I don’t think Dark Matter would be suited to North American animation. Anime on the other hand….

  17. Hi Mr Mallozzi

Thanks for all the updates and ofcourse for bringing Dark Matter to our lives. One question. With the way things seem to work these days with all the uncertainties over renewals, how would you approach future projects? Would you go for an arc per season, with a conclusion of sorts each time just in case the worst happens, or would you still go for the cliffhanger and a multi series arc and hope for the best? I know I prefer the latter but it seems to be an increasing gamble.

Fingers crossed you get to finish the story. It’s been fantastic so far.

    Graeme

It would really depend on the project. Dark Matter is, by its very nature, the type of show that peppers its viewers with twists and turns, and ends each episode on a mini-cliffhanger.

    1. “How old is Five, actually? I’ve always been curious!”

In the t.v. series, she’s around 18. In the comic book, she was much younger.

  18. Joe,

In a previous post you mentioned the various options for bringing Dark Matter back: 2 Seasons, 1 Season, Miniseries and Movie.

Like everyone else, I want DM back on a screen, I want to see the cast back in their roles, hell, I want not only the cast but also the entire crew back doing the terrific job they have been doing. But if all that fails, I would still want to know the rest of the story.

So I am curious if you considered, and if there would be viable options, to finish telling the story in another format, not live action. I know DM started with a comic book, would you consider ending it with 2 seasons on comics? How viable would it be to do something in between, like animation (with the cast providing voice work if possible)?

    Thanks.

    1. Just noticed the same question have been asked and answered while I was typing.

    2. “Joe,

Yes. Comics is a possibility. The only thing holding me back would be time.

If a Japanese anime company reached out, on the other hand, I’d be all for it!

  19. I have a million questions for you sir, but for the sake of time I will ask only one… after I say to you Thank you! Thank you for your creativity, intelligence, and dedication and the fact that you like a majority of your peers in the ‘industry’ have decided to share that which makes you unique with the rest of us mortals. I have enjoyed (for years) shows that I had no clue you were a part of till Dark Matter came along…. so I say again THANK YOU! Thanks for sharing your dreams, thoughts inspirations, and most importantly your wit! Regardless of the outcome of the current speed bump I look forward to many many many more years of enjoyment of what spews forth from your brain good sir.

Now the question… What’s up with “Baron Destructo”?? I love that name and would love to hear how that came about and what inspired that.

    Thanks again for everything…

      Hey Tim,

Thanks so much. It truly is my pleasure to interact with fandom and, at the end of the day, a small gesture for the support you’ve all shown me over the years.

As for Baron Destructo – what can I say? I like villains. Surprised?

  20. Well, that sucks about the food poisoning on top of everything else. Though, I can picture you assembling all the suspected foodstuffs in the kitchen and announcing, “I suppose you’re wondering why I asked you all here.”

(It was the ramen, in the kitchen, with the e. coli.)

Do we have to ask Dark Matter questions? I figure you must be pretty tired about thinking about it. I was going to ask how are Akemi, and the pups doing with adjusting to the move? Any news on a permanent place? How are Lulu and Suji doing? I miss the days when Dark Matter was kind of a given.

We’ve settled in nicely. We’re at a new place until the end of the month, then move back to our regular abode (which you have visited) at the top of the month. We’re looking to buy but, so far, haven’t had much luck. Big open concepts with a terrace located close to a park or green area are apparently hard to come by in downtown T.O.

P.S. How are you enjoying retirement?

      1. Ah, that place is actually in a really good spot. I’m really glad to hear that everyone is doing well. I feel we need more Akemi pics! 🙂 I hope the purchase works out!

My retirement so far, kinda feels like I’m on vacation! LOL I did hear today that the fellow that is taking over my job moved to my desk today, which does feel… weird. I’ve been in that particular spot for about 12 years and would NOT give it up, as it’s right by a window overlooking the harbour! I have a better view out my window at home now though anyway! 🙂

Well, now that you have the time – see you in Toronto?

        2. Retirement always does feel like a holiday when you first stop working lol
But, when you get in to the swing of doing whatever you want, whenever you want you wonder how you ever had the time to work! We’ve done so much since retiring in July and plenty of things lined up 👍

          1. Ceresis, that’s what I’ve heard from every person I know that’s retired from where I work. Um, that’s workED now, I guess. They all say they don’t know how they ever had time to work!

          2. Retirement? Probably not in this lifetime. Retirement will be that I can no longer work OR dead. We need to keep working to fund Patrick’s lifetime after we die.

  21. Hey, Joe, since you offered, here’s a mailbag question: you’ve mentioned a few times that One’s story was cut short due to external factors. Can you give us a glimpse of where you had originally planned his character arc to go/end?

    1. “Hey, Joe, since you offered, here’s a mailbag question: you’ve mentioned a few times that One’s story was cut short due to external factors. Can you give us a glimpse of where you had originally planned his character arc to go/end?”

More than anything, I would have explored the love/hate relationship between ONE and THREE, and explored his role as a challenger of the rest of the crew’s shifting badass outlook.

  22. Ugh Hope you feel 100% better soon.

What do you think of the idea of fanfic in general and DM fanfic in particular? I’m guessing you wouldn’t read any. What about professionally published novels based on your universe?

I think the idea of fanfic is great, but I don’t read any for legal reasons.

As for someone else telling the story I have planned – I don’t love the idea.

  23. Hi Joe, I’ve had a burning question for a while now, how did three get his scar? And while I have you I’d like to say how much I love your creation and appreciate what a great job you’ve done in sculpting your vision. I look forward to whatever the future brings you.

      Thank you.

As for THREE’s scar, it was a last minute addition by our uber-talented Key Make-Up Lynda McCormick.

      1. Thanks to Lynda for adding Three’s distinguished scar.

Although a last-minute addition, what would be the story behind him getting it if you had to make it part of Three’s backstory?

        1. “Although a last-minute addition, what would be the story behind him getting it if you had to make it part of Three’s backstory?”

          I’d probably make it Tanner-related.

  24. Hi Joseph,

First off, thanks for keeping us in the loop as things progress. The disappointment thus far is offset by the amazing fan response. Helping to soften the blow for me at least.

Question- is a web series possible or is that not financially feasible?

Unfortunately, no, a web series is not financially feasible.

  25. How are you and the crew holding up?

Also I like the comic book idea. It keeps the story evolving, and the rights could be picked up at any point for a movie, series reboot or game if it attracts a following.

    1. “How are you and the crew holding up?

We’re all well. Disappointed. Baffled by the cancellation. But all doing okay.

  26. Okay I have this burning question I need answering because for some reason I can’t find a consistent answer. How old is Emily/5 anyway?? Is she really 15? Or is she older/younger?

    1. “Okay I have this burning question I need answering because for some reason I can’t find a consistent answer. How old is Emily/5 anyway?? Is she really 15? Or is she older/younger?”

She’s older. By end of season 3, she’s about 18.

  27. Joe, if we collectively were to raise enough money to pay you a salary, would you just write the remaining stories (even as summaries) for us and send them to us?

    Please?

    1. “Joe, if we collectively were to raise enough money to pay you a salary, would you just write the remaining stories (even as summaries) for us and send them to us?

      Please?”

I think a comic book series would be the way to go.

  28. I am sorry to hear you are unwell. I hope you get better soon. Given what has happened we need a great new show from you and your awesome stable of extremely talented people to fill the enormous void that now sits where Dark Matter resided only a month ago.

    1. “I am sorry to hear you are unwell. I hope you get better soon. Given what has happened we need a great new show from you and your awesome stable of extremely talented people to fill the enormous void that now sits where Dark Matter resided only a month ago.”

We’re not done yet. But, if we are, I’d love to find a way to work with this same fantastic crew – and many of the great onscreen talents I was lucky enough to spend time with on DM.

  29. I am keeping my fingers crossed for you and hoping this incredible show and story gets its chance to be completed. Is there a chance that someone could also tell the remainder in graphic novel or novelization form?

    1. “I am keeping my fingers crossed for you and hoping this incredible show and story gets its chance to be completed. Is there a chance that someone could also tell the remainder in graphic novel or novelization form?”

That someone would be me and – yes!

  30. Thanks so much for being so communicative with fans.
Kind of a left field question (and I will not be offended if you deem it too picky) but I noticed that sometimes on Zairon people will be referred to by family name/honorific (e.g. Drago-San, Akita-San, possibly Misaki-kun) but sometimes not (Teku, Misaki). Was there a particular reasoning as to how those were used?

    1. “Thanks so much for being so communicative with fans.

It was really a matter of respect – and familiarity. In the case of Teku, he was like a father to Ryo so he refers to him by his first name in much the same way that Teku refers to Ryo by his first name. Same applies to the longstanding friendship between Misaki and Ryo.

        1. “Thank you so much!
(PS I hope you feel better soon!)”

          Thanks, Beth.

  31. What’s you favorite, guilty-pleasure, sci fi trope? Be as specific or vague as you want. And feel better soon! We need you in fighting form b/c you inspire us as much as the Raza does!

    1. “What’s you favorite, guilty-pleasure, sci fi trope? Be as specific or vague as you want. And feel better soon! We need you in fighting form b/c you inspire us as much as the Raza does!”

Dark Matter is all about upending established tropes, be it character stereotypes or narrative chestnuts.

I have two favorites, both of which are featured on Dark Matter. The first is time travel since it allows for so much humor. The other is Alternate Universes that allow me to explore the road not taken.

    1. “Any chance we could see 1’s doppelganger from alternative Universe? PS Thanks for all you do & have done…”

Anything is possible. This is sci-fi!

  32. O.M.G.!! I just now got out of Twitter Jail after a 2 day stay! I had to get a Twitter savvy Lawyer to represent me in Twitter Court. The Twitter Judge finally apologized for calling me Automated Spam and unlocked my account. I’m FREE again!!! The Judge told me to stop acting like a Robot with my retweets. I told him, “but, It’s a fan thing for Dark Matter!” So, I will be there Friday night, but will be tweeting like Grandma . . . a little slower.

      You’ve been sprung!

  33. Joe, I vote for the curry ramen. You once got sick in Japan from eating greasy ramen. So I bet it was something in that.

Since someone asked about THREE’s scar, I’m wondering about the ANDROID’S bar code. Is it a good bar code? Is it scan-able? If yes, what will it buy?

    1. “Joe, I vote for the curry ramen. You once got sick in Japan from eating greasy ramen. So I bet it was something in that.

Akemi said the exact same thing about the ramen. Love the fact that you know as much about my eating habits as my girlfriend does!

Yes, whenever you scan the Android, you get one half-price title at amazon shipped to your ship!

  34. Hey Joe! Big fan since the Stargate days (actually bingeing SG1 as we speak with a friend that’s seeing it for the first time!) Anyway got a 2 for 1 question. What is your favorite Sci-Fi show that is currently airing, and your favorite of all time?

    1. “Hey Joe! Big fan since the Stargate days (actually bingeing SG1 as we speak with a friend that’s seeing it for the first time!) Anyway got a 2 for 1 question. What is your favorite Sci-Fi show that is currently airing, and your favorite of all time?”

Is that a trick question? Favorite sci-fi show? Dark Matter of course. But if you wanted one I wasn’t involved in, I’d go with Black Mirror.

I don’t know if I have a favorite all time series. Again, Dark Matter is obvious – and all the Stargate. But, again, steering clear of any of the ones I’ve been involved with, I really loved ST:TOS and Farscape.

      1. 😂 obviously I meant OTHER than the greatest show ever laid to film, Dark Matter. 👍 Farscape is a fav for me too, so creative, and had an identity all its own. I feel the Stargate shows really set the standard for what good sci-fi should be. They struck a good balance of drama, action, technobabble, and of course the BEST villains of all time, the Goa’uld!

          I agree!

  35. Sorry to hear you’ve been poorly but good to know you’re recovering.

I look forward to a selection of Ben’s soundtracks going online.

I hope one of the amazing projects you mentioned being invited to work on, is Stargate:Origins.

Alas, no, but the launch of the Stargate: Command site is plenty exciting. And I do plan to make it a point to drop by the MGM offices and say hi the next time I’m in town.

  36. Dear Joe, get better soon. I have a cold so I can commiserate. My question is was Dark Matter your dream project or do you have another amazing idea just percolating? It hard to believe that anything could top Dark Matter but with your fertile mind who knows what you might come up with..

    1. “Dear Joe, get better soon. I have a cold so I can commiserate. My question is was Dark Matter your dream project or do you have another amazing idea just percolating? It hard to believe that anything could top Dark Matter but with your fertile mind who knows what you might come up with..”

I have a half dozen pilot scripts I’d like to go out, some genre, some not. I’ve also been talking with some production companies about developing and show running their projects.

  37. First Joe your Health ,Take the time to fully rest its important.
About the show, well I can’t understand why not more people isn’t offering their network support. After all the tweets from fans and well know figures from all different backgrounds including actors and actress and so many others that I’m not aware of.
We know.. They know ..the show must go on.
Not because i love the show ,Yes I Do love it but soon their will be no turning back and then people might go thinking..”We should have done something .they were right all the way”
What more networks want they have everything of something that works in front of their eyes on the table ready to be taken…Are they hypnotized by all this worldwide involvement’s for a SYFY serie ??Even on that tiny island in the middle of the ocean their was a red dot tweeting to show their love for #Dark Matter. That’s Something!!! If it’s monopolies so much people around the globe there is no questions about it because there is something there of great value.
Ok SYFY didn’t renew they made a mistake Other networks should jump on the occasion ..I would !
Joseph Mallozzi you done Great stuff We all know ,you touched many generations by your stories.. And Dark Matter is another proof of That. Can we just close our eyes and doing nothing like nothing is going on…NO!
Does it means that other projects might come to an unfair ,unjustified End like this again?
Why putting so much love and talents from a Cast that I have never see like that before ,so much interaction with their fans and end up on a Dramatic STOP! What else Do you want ??
Think about it very seriously …What else??

  38. Just a comment, I just wanted you (and crew) to know you are truly a stand up guy for dealing with such a devastating end to what could have been a long lasting classic like all the SG series. I honestly don’t know how you could even start another project knowing there could be a premature cancelation like this one.
With all respect and admiration I’ll always be a huge fan of your work!

    1. “Just a comment, I just wanted you (and crew) to know you are truly a stand up guy for dealing with such a devastating end to what could have been a long lasting classic like all the SG series. Thank you.

As for starting another project knowing there could be a premature cancellation – that’s the nature of the business. In the case of Dark Matter, it doesn’t really make much sense since, as I pointed out, the ratings were strong, other shows the network owned received pick ups, and we reached out to see if we could make ‘the numbers work” and were told no. It’s clear now that there was nothing we could have done to avoid the cancellation. When all was said and done, the decision makers didn’t like the show (this is assuming they actually watched it).

      1. With the departure of Chris Regina from SYFY, I can’t help but wonder if there are office politics involved, in which Dark Matter just happened to caught up. It sounds like that whole, “resigned to pursue other interests” thing, which of course is a euphemism. There seems to be something else going on there.

  39. I love Dark Matter! It’s the best program on SYFY!
    It deserves another season!

    1. “I love Dark Matter! It’s the best program on SYFY!
      It deserves another season!”

      Thanks, Dan. I agree.

  40. Good evening from Russia, Mr. Mallozzi.

I’d like to thank you for waging this fight for two weeks. I won’t pretend that I know how it feels, I’ve never been in such situations. Still, you did more for your fandom than James Cameron did when Dark Angel gets cancelled.
Of course, social networks weren’t so popular back in the day.

Excuse me if I’ll be saying something inappropriate, I’m from other side of the planet. As much as I’m eagering for completion of the story, I would not like for there to be neither mini-series, nor comic books. It’s not what you wanted, it’s not what you’ll be pleased to do. And it will certainly affect the outcome.
Your show raised the bar so high, it will be painful to watch it lowers. In that case I’d really prefer just to stop. With kind of a false hope of getting proper developing in the future.

Nevertheless, I’m anxious why you ain’t even considering possibility of crowdfunding. Maybe we aren’t able to fund a whole season, but we sure as hell able to pay for sets rentals. Many people suggesting it. Many simply want it. It could give you – and us – more time for discover hidden options. And for wrapping our minds around the fact that there might not be any.

All the best, Mr. Mallozzi. Should you ever be in Russia, I’d be happy to meet you in personal.

      Hello John,

Ideally, we would have gotten that 2 series pickup but a lengthy miniseries would be better than nothing. Who knows? If it did well, we could do another.

  41. Keep us posted on your fight to get Dark Matter renewed! It’s the best program on SYFY without a doubt!

      Will do!

  42. Since I’m seeing some Anime speculation in these other questions….

    [Live Action]
    1. Ext. Space (Black Ships finish coming out of the tear in space. Raza in foreground)

    2. Int. Alien Command Ship (Alien hand reaches for a control panel, pushing a button.)

    3. Ext. Space (Reality twists, shakes, vibrates, there is a flash of light emanating from the front of the Alien Armada)

    [Begin Anime]

    4. Int. Raza (Raza crew, confuzed, looking at each other, selves, and bridge surrounding)

    5. Three: (Perplexed) “What the hell is this now?”

    6. Two: (Serious and concerned) “Android, …. What just happened?”

The rest of your S04 and S05 plans can proceed as already written.

Six little scenes to change the format smoothly and seamlessly(ish). My gift to you, the cast, crew, and everyone of us who believes this MUST continue.

If you’d like to buy the idea, Joe, come up, we’ll go fishing, you buy the beer, and we’ll call it square. Deal? (That’s my question, by the way) 😀

Now go get some Anime producers up to speed.

  43. Mr. Mallozzi,

I own every episode of SG-1, Atlantis, and SG-U. I don’t know how many times my wife and family have watched them. IMHO, Dark Matter was the best work yet. I can’t believe how much losing this has bothered me and clearly many others. Keeping an eye out for your next work … we’ll always be your fans.

    Rob

  44. Hi! I just wanted to say that no matter how the future shakes out, I am so very grateful that Dark Matter is a show that exists. It’s absolutely amazing – there are no words, honestly. I’m sad to see it go, but happy beyond compare that it existed and that I and so many others got to see it. So thank you, the cast, and the crew so very much for the show and all the work you all put into it.
Two questions: One, I’ve noticed that Four talked a lot less than Ryo – it definitely made his words count for more when he used them. Is there an in-story reason as to why this is, or is it just to contrast the two characters?
And two, have you picked out names for Two’s daughter and Five’s sister? If so, would you be willing to share them or would they be too big of spoilers?
Once again, thank you and everyone else for Dark Matter. It’s among my and my family’s favorite shows, and I’m sure we’ll be watching and re-watching it for years to come.

Regarding FOUR being a man of few words in comparison to Ryo – yes, this was a conscious effort to contrast the two sides of the same man.

      One of them is Carina.

        1. “Thank you so much for your prompt reply and answering my questions! I hope you feel better soon!”

          Thanks!

  45. Hey Mr Mallozzi, ^_^

If the plans for a live action mini series goes tits up, would you consider putting Dark Matter into anime form? Bioware released Mass Effect: Paragon Lost and Dragon Age: Dawn of the Seeker by FUNimation & Production IG & they both looked great. The cast would be the voice actors for it, as it wouldn’t really work without them. 😀
    Hope you feel better soon.

      I’d certainly consider it!

  46. Do you hold the IP for Dark Matter or does SyFy? I figure they own the rights to the episodes and at least a contract regarding future screen related endeavors, but I don’t know how this side of the industry actually works.

    1. “Do you hold the IP for Dark Matter or does SyFy? I figure they own the rights to the episodes and at least a contract regarding future screen related endeavors, but I don’t know how this side of the industry actually works.”

The rights are held by Prodigy Pictures and Dark Horse Comics.

      1. It’s a shame that international channels can not club together to pick the series up, in the UK it is popular enough to get its own aftershow show, after dark. Clearly they can create some of their own content even if the American channel does not. Wish this could happen. Thank you for what you have given us and your ongoing efforts.

  47. Hey Joe, firstly Thank You for tireless efforts in trying to find DM a new home your energy has been amazing, bad Ramen notwithstanding. But my question is simply the about the Blu-ray / DVD disc and does the DM production company get a good part of the proceeds from them and is SYFY involved in the distribution???

The Blu-ray and DVD component is handled by Funimationn.

  48. It’s been fun reading the comments/answers! Hope you feel better tonight. You sound very perky!

Just FYI, I might miss part of the twitter campaign tomorrow. Ann (Dr Jo’s caretaker) asked me to check on the cats tomorrow evening. Yes, the cats are still “homeless”. Ann’s leaning toward taking them with her, when she heads back to Texas in a few weeks but she’s really hoping someone in the family steps up. The family has been stepping up but only to take things from the house. 🙁

Very sad. You’re a good friend. Hope those cats find a new home.

  49. I’m still desperately hoping for the normal live-action conclusion, but I concur that an anime adaptation would by far be the most fitting next-best thing. Supernatural got one and it didn’t even “need” one! So is there any particular way to get the word out in Japan about Dark Matter? I know the home video releases of Dark Matter are, oddly enough, distributed by Funimation… they have to have some connections, so maybe they can help somehow?

      Maybe…

  50. If all of your/our hopes and dreams to see Dark Matter play out on screen are dashed, do you think you’ll go back to comics to tell the rest of the story?

    1. “If all of your/our hopes and dreams to see Dark Matter play out on screen are dashed, do you think you’ll go back to comics to tell the rest of the story?”

It’s a possibility. The problem with comics is that they require a lot of time and effort (especially a two season arc) without much in the way of payment – certainly not in comparison to television.

  51. Is there a glimmer of hope that Dark Matter will get 2 more seasons? A network that just woke up after another tweet storm? I just can’t believe we couldn’t make it work

    1. “Is there a glimmer of hope that Dark Matter will get 2 more seasons? A network that just woke up after another tweet storm? I just can’t believe we couldn’t make it work”

Dark Matter fandom has been nothing short of astounding – but, sadly, the 2 season possibility is off the table.

  52. Hello Joseph,

I just wonder, what would it take for Syfy to admit they might have made a mistake and reconsider their decision? Or is it simply as a matter of principle now to avoid a precedential case? Or would they actually lose that much money by ordering another Dark Matter season, that even the prospect of a properly concluded epic space opera wouldn’t count enough? Getting that far and then just dropping it? … I don’t get it …
I also want to say, that without a doubt I’d even love to get a short final DM season. It seemed to be almost impossible too in the case of Continuum (Roger Cross was also part of it) two years ago. But Simon Barry somehow worked it out and created a very satisfying ending. I have trust that you can do that for Dark Matter too and I really hope you will get the chance.
Finally I’d like to say how much I like Dark Matter, it was always amazing to watch and for me it was the first series, that had some actual “Firefly vibes” for me. A big part of this besides the fine stories is the incredible cast. I don’t know how you did it, but your choice of all of them, main and support cast members, was pretty much perfect! A bit thx for that and give them a hug from me!
So I’m keeping my fingers crossed for at least that final short season.
Good luck and greetings from Germany!

First, I don’t think syfy would ever change their minds. As I already pointed out, our show ran on their network for three seasons so I don’t see how a fourth season would suddenly change their financial model. What I believe happened is that: a) They spent money on new programming and felt they didn’t need us to fill a time slot, b) Our champion at Syfy New York/Acquisitions, Chris Regina, left. c) And, to be honest, I don’t think the decision makers knew much about the show.

      Thanks!

      1. > c) And, to be honest, I don’t think the decision makers knew much about the show.

I suspect they may have acquired a better idea of what the show is about by now 🙂

        1. “In reply to Joseph Mallozzi.

          🙂

      2. “c) And, to be honest, I don’t think the decision makers knew much about the show.”

I’m afraid, you very well might be right here. Though, how sad and frustrating is that …
But seriously, Syfy should spare their breath then with that marketing phrase “It’s a fan thing” … obviously it’s not … Does Syfy really think their potential viewers are that naive? 🙁

      3. “c) And, to be honest, I don’t think the decision makers knew much about the show.”

        Obviously.

  53. Oh man I’m super late to the party, but I hope that maybe you’ll find the time to answer this. I’m not 100% sure if it was ever in the series, or referred to, but why was the Android trying to kick everyone’s butts in the beginning? I feel like I never understood that, and it has always confused me. Maybe I’ll think of a better question later, but hopefully this one is easy enough for you to address quickly! Thanks so much for reading at least! (Ps if someone else asked this its been a rough ride trying to navigate 100 other comments)

In Episode 208, “Stuff To Steal, People To Kill”, AU Kal Varrick sends a report back to the G.A. and warns them that the ship’s security system is an android that can only be turned off with a command code. Unfortunately, when our crew came out of stasis, they’d forgotten it.

      1. Aha! Okay I do recall that now that you mention it. Thanks so much for taking the time to answer, and I hope you are feeling better!

  54. Joe, first of all thank you for giving us Dark Matter and all the other incredible worlds you’ve created. Second of all, thank you for the opportunity for letting us interact with you and become all one family, just like the crew of the Raza. 🙂

Wanted to just second (or third) the notion that perhaps if the worst came to pass an no pickup at all, then splitting the difference between live action and comic book and going with an animated series might be a good alternative. No need to worry about the sets coming down, and you’d have a lot more freedom with scenery and action scenes. And voiced by the same cast of course!

And I love the idea of going with highly detailed but realistic anime format (FIVE already has the perfect role in that regard.) Just look at the Five Centimeters per Second series – the detail is incredible. Or even hybrid animation like Voltron Legendary Defender (CGI for establishing shots, spacecraft and battles, and conventional animation for the character action.)

    Thanks again. Keeping fingers crossed!

    Anthony

      Hey Anthony,

      I do like this idea.

  55. Mr. Mallozzi, SG-1 seemed to evolve naturally in regards to character relationships. The characters start out as strangers and then become a family as the years go on. Dark Matter follows that line of natural evolution, but did it much faster. Is this due to your writing, or are you blessed with amazing casts that get closer to each other off-screen and reflect it in front of the camera?

The cast is very close and their chemistry is obvious onscreen, but the quicker evolution of the family unit was intentional on my part, owing to the fact that, unlike SG-1 or the Atlantis expedition or the crew of the Destiny, the crew of The Raza had no one to rely on but each other.

  56. Hi. I really enjoy your work, ever since the Stargates. You are one of the best producers out there, who really care about fans, especially with this blog. I was just curious if you can tell us. Is the people you are talking to about saving Dark Matter are investors (for another season) or possible distributors (like Netflix or networks)? Keep your head up!

In that scenario, I guess you could call them distributors.

  57. It seems to me, and I think many others, that the Science Fiction genre isn’t particularly liked by the networks. While certainly there are exceptions, it seems like great SciFi shows get cancelled all the time. It’s disheartening to us devoted fans. In your experience do you feel this is accurate in the industry, or are we maybe just a bit sensitive (we are a passionate group after all)?

I do agree up to a certain point, but I think that’s changing thanks to the likes of Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, even CW!

  58. Hi Joseph. Shaz from Melbourne, Australia. Glad you’re feeling better. Just letting you know there are those of us down this side of the world who are totally peeved about what’s happened. Have watched Dark Matter since the beginning and is by far my favourite Sci-fi. Keep up the pressure on these executives who seem to not consider us multitude of fans around the world. Thank you so much for such an amazing series. Please give all the cast a big hug from me too. So enjoy their characters. Hugs to you too…PS would love to be able to buy at least a Dark Matter t-shirt. Getting my head around these time zones but will try to get in on the tweet. All of my fingers andtoes crossed that these execs will come to their senses and let you all complete the next series. Fond regards x

Hey Shaz, thanks for this. You should know that SyfyInternational and SyfyAU were incredibly supportive of the show and shoulder none of the blame for the cancellation.

      1. “You should know that SyfyInternational and SyfyAU were incredibly supportive of the show and shoulder none of the blame for the cancellation.”

I do appreciate that and I really enjoyed the “After Dark” shows.
Obviously I don’t know much about the TV industry and how that business exactly works, but does that mean that SyfyInternational, SyfyAU, SyfyDE etc. don’t have any influence on the program? And they can’t spent some extra money, if a show does well internationally?
I wish it would be different (like BBC and BBC America) …

The SyfyInternational broadcasters have spent money on the show every season, paying a license fee for the right to air the series. They are a crucial piece of the financial puzzle and they would have been there for us in season 4, but Syfy US pulled out, leaving a gap in the show’s financing.

  59. Questions, questions… but trying to stay away from the stressful topic of Schrodinger’s Miniseries for now…

    1) As someone who has always been interested in TV writing and production, it was great to read the pilot script. Is there any chance of publishing any kind of scripts book? I know the other writers’ work would have rights issues, but maybe just the Mallozzi and Mullie scripts might be possible, with some behind-the-scenes info, restored scenes, and so on?

    2) The original SF series with a 5-year story plan was Babylon 5. (With which I think Dark Matter always seems to have lots of parallels – not so much in style or story but in ethos.) When planning B5, Joe Straczynski always said he had put in “trapdoors” for all of the central characters, so in the event of an actor suddenly becoming unavailable, there was a path for them to be replaced seamlessly(ish), without undoing the plot and all of the foreshadowing and build-up already put in place. What’s your approach when you’re planning Dark Matter, which also has a lot of intricately set up elements that don’t pay off until several seasons down the line? Is there a set of backup plans or are you happier to trust to good luck and write around whatever comes up as and when it happens?

As always, thank you from the bottom of my heart for putting such a wonderful show on my TV screen.

      1. No plans to publish a script book, but I’d be happy to upload more Dark Matter scripts if the interest is there.

      2. The trapdoor approach would have been hard to accomplish with Dark Matter because it was less a big picture story and really all about the journeys of these characters. So, to answer your question – no back-up plan.

  60. Not sure if you’ve answered this but what network or streaming service is the final potential partner. If you haven’t why not, I don’t see the harm.

    1. “Not sure if you’ve answered this but what network or streaming service is the final potential partner. If you haven’t why not, I don’t see the harm.”

I can’t say because they’d prefer me not to in the event things don’t work out.

  61. Oh… and another thing if I may Joe….. as Sci-Fi has all these space/time events, you could always have the Raza pass through one of those space/time events, bringing it back in time before ONE was killed, and move forward from there… just a thought, in the event we get our wishes answered positively… 🙂

    1. “Oh… and another thing if I may Joe….. as Sci-Fi has all these space/time events, you could always have the Raza pass through one of those space/time events, bringing it back in time before ONE was killed, and move forward from there… just a thought, in the event we get our wishes answered positively… 🙂”

I’m not a fan of using time travel to undo long-established events.

  62. (OK… so… here’s my initial post… feel free to delete it if its a dupe… )

    Hi Joe,

Glad to hear you’re feeling better…. I’ve been a big fan of yours since the SG series…. I thank you for all the work you’ve done in the past, and for what you may do in the future… and for all that you do for your fans, such as this Q&A session… over 100 comments in, and you’re still at it… that’s awesome!!

I have a couple of questions to add if I may…

    1) How long does it take to shoot each episode? And are each episode shot in succession, or do you shoot multiple episodes at a time based on outside factors, such as locations, weather, etc, then separate them in post?

    2) And this one is a definite long shot…. is there any chance that we’ll ever see what happens to the crew of the Destiny? Even if a different cast is required due to actors having other commitments? SGU was my favourite SG series…. something about that old ship, wandering aimlessly through space with a crew that initially had no idea how to operate it, had me so intrigued… then, like Dark Matter… left us hanging with the crew in stasis… hmmm…. makes me wonder….Dark Matter starts with a crew in stasis….. did the crew of the Destiny morph into the crew of the Raza??? Lol….

Thanks again Joe for all that you do!!! I can’t wait to see what comes from you next!

      1. Each episodes takes about 7 days to shoot (sometimes a day more, rare a day less). Occasionally, we will block shoot scenes across various episodes if there’s an availability issue – either to do with an actor or a location.

      2. I think that if MGM does relaunch Stargate, we would need to find out what happened to everyone eventually – SG-1, the Atlantis expedition, and the crew of the Destiny.

  63. Joe!

(WP may have eaten my post.)

Keeping decent SciFi shows on air for the length of their natural lives seems like a Sisyphean purgatory. Why not launch your very own Science Fiction network? Be your own Programming Decision Maker? You know how well the fans would support you. We’ve dented Twitter. 😉

Okay, but I’d need every participant in the tweet storms to donate 100k.

  64. Well, from what I can piece together, the real news is that a Season 4 and Season 5 option are now completely dead. Frankly that shocks me because in terms of a campaign of support we are just getting started. I for one have zero interest in the alternative time line of a miniseries / movie cap like Serenity or Peacewars. (Neither do I have even the slightest interest in other medium like comics or whatnot.) If you do go to air with it I won’t be watching. It is of greater interest to me to leave the story in limbo so that I can imagine the likely conclusions extrapolated. And long term the world you have created will have greater value unimpaired by stop gap endings even financially.

I had planned on the fact that after such offers had been pending were exhausted an honest to God push to netflix for 2 full seasons will suceed. But waiting for an unsatisfactory truncated ending hinders that and really your drop dead date is already arrived in ways with sets slated for destruction.

The crew and cast need to get on with their lives and if there is no optimal full-time option then I prefer to let you all go and do your next great thing. The characters and world of Dark Matter live on and will always be loved in the hearts of its fans.

Food poisoning can sometimes just be a result of your immune system being run down by stress and exertion such that the bugs that are there get you that would not normally. You need a complete rest and to feel at home for a few days at the least to get your system restored to function. Delegate and let others work. Doctors orders.

I will go back to my life in exile and leave the campaign. However I want to thank first you for giving us a great piece of culture to both enjoy and enlighten us. And it is not the first time you have done so nor the last. I greatly look forward to your next project. The cast and crew wow I like so many fans will truly miss seeing you. I will be following and supporting the careers of all involve in so far as a fan and consumer of art can. Blessings and Salutations to You all! I wish you all good thoughts, good words and good deeds.

To my fellow fans who supported the campaign I am so sorry for your loss. I have shared the attachment that many of you have to these wonderful characters that determined to define / redefine themselves in the face of all odds and a galactic wide society bent on determing both their identity and their fate for them. It is little wonder that we cling to this narrative as we hope to see a positive outcome to such overwhelming odds. I want that you all be and live that outcome. Each and everyone of you should pursue your dreams in life because you are all just as bad ass as the crew of the Raza. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

The first and most important element to sucess is belief. That is what is exemplified by the Raza crew who believe in themselves of necessity. If the stars were rightly aligned I know we can get those two seasons if that is what everyone wants and is committed to. But I guess the time has passed. No worries. We love you! Get well, be well and do great. Fare well!

First off, apologies. For some reason, this comment ended up in the blog’s spam folder.

Unfortunately, Netflix is no longer an option.

There was never any intention of stringing the cast along past their options – or, frankly, much past our window of opportunity to save the show.

  65. My, you have been busy. Lots of questions and answers. I’ll refrain from asking about the fate of the Raza crew for now…fingers, toes & eyes still crossed. So…I’ll go back to last season and ask about Devan. I feel like we barely got to know him and that his death was a tad premature (like another character’s). Were there other plans for Devan’s character or had he run his course?

Hope you are feeling better. What’s your favorite comfort food?

Don’t think that I didn’t notice that comment about what future adventures awaited the Raza crew: alien invasion (or is that infestation), the android revolution and our crew working for the GA…what?!…seriously?! In what universe?

Were there other plans for Devan’s character or had he run his course?

Hope you are feeling better. What’s your favorite comfort food?

Don’t think that I didn’t notice that comment about what future adventures awaited the Raza crew: alien invasion (or is that infestation), the android revolution and our crew working for the GA…what?!…seriously?! In what universe?”

Interestingly, Devon’s arc turned out slightly different than planned. There was a whole through line involving suspicion falling on him for a number of close calls with the G.A. At the end of Episode 207, rather than being killed he would turn a corner and come face to face with Inspector Kierkan. He’d be gone for a while, and then returned – but turned. Anyway, because of scheduling, we had to abandon this original storyline and wrapped things up quicker than we would have liked.

      My favorite comfort food? Chocolate.

With the double threat of an alien invasion and android insurrection, and a friendly in the G.A. in the form of Lieutenant Anders, the G.A. offers the crew of The Raza a deal: amnesty for past crimes, a fresh start, in exchange for becoming agents of the Galactic Authority.

  66. My favorite part about Dark Matter is the characters development. Number 3 and the android always makes me laugh.

  67. Darn, I missed this!

The thing I’ve always wondered while watching/re-watching: how long has Two been alive? She was built as an adult, so how long ago was she “activated”? I never gleaned a clear timeline on this, though I assume it was at least 10 years.

I’ve been intentionally vague on timelines, but it’s been less than 10 years.

  68. I’m a big fan of both the show and the comic book. You’re a very talented writer, sir. I hope that one day I’ll be able to create something that’s as loved as your work.

If you could pick any show that’s not already on your resume to work on, which one would it be and why?

Assuming it’s a show currently in production, I’d have to say Black Mirror. I love the anthology structure.

      1. I haven’t seen it yet, so I’ll have to check it out.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I’m sure doing things like this isn’t easy to do with your schedule.

  69. Do you have an idea of what industries the corporations in DM grew out of? For example tech, space or energy. The show gives the impression that they are invested in various commercial enterprises, but some seem to have a historic cultural component to them.

    1. “Do you have an idea of what industries the corporations in DM grew out of? For example tech, space or energy. The show gives the impression that they are invested in various commercial enterprises, but some seem to have a historic cultural component to them.”

I preferred to keep it vague, suggesting their vast exploratory and exploitative reach. Not sure about the cultural component you mentioned aside from the fact that they clearly originated from different countries.

  70. Hi Joe! Hope you’re feeling better by now! First off; thank you so much for bringing Dark Matter into our lives. After Stargate was cancelled, I didn’t feel like I would ever get another show that would mean so much to me, but a few years later, there you were with this wonderful gem!

    1. I was curious if you’ve ever brought back a (recurring) guest star purely based on the way the actor portrayed their character, or what they brought to the dynamic of the show?
    2. Do the actors get to improvise a lot, and if so, could you point out a specific scene which stands out to you the most?

Thank you again so much, we’ll keeping lighting that Raza until the very end!

      1. Yes. The character of Wexler played by Ennis Esmer. He was brilliant. So I unkilled him.

      2. So long as I get what I need from a scene, the actors are free to improvise or offer alternate versions so I can pick and choose in the editing room. As for a specific example? Hmmm. Any scene featuring Anthony Lemke. 🙂

  71. Hey Joe!
Here’s my question, Why was Devon even on the Raza? Like, what was his purpose? He was basically abandoned and killed and no one but Five even asked about him. The crew mentions Nyx post death frequently, but no one gives a crap about Devon. Nyx was the only one who cared about him.

    1. “Hey Joe!

In the case of both Nyx and Devon, the point of their arcs was to drive home the point that, despite seeking to become better people, the crew of The Raza are always in danger. And the same can be said for whoever comes in contact with them. Nyx’s death was tragic, but Devon’s death was equally tragic in that he sacrificed himself for Nyx – and nobody knew.

His final scene was truncated by another producer in the editing suite and, as a result, I don’t think this landed as well as it could have.

      1. > His final scene was truncated by another producer in the editing suite and, as a result, I don’t think this landed as well as it could have.

Judging by the tears in my partners eyes at that ending, I think it landed well enough.

  72. Mr. Mallozzi, thank you for taking the time to engage with fans. I feel like I’ve gained so much insight into how the industry operates, how things work behind the scenes, and really enjoyed reading the script, thank you. You have been a favorite for years (since Stargate) and like a great brand, I know when I see your name attached to a project, it means quality. Thank you also for the hope that you have given fans that DM may yet find a home. It seems not a week goes by that I don’t see a report in the tech blogs about new players investing in content (I remember one about Apple having a $1 billion budget to acquire and produce original shows) so we know there are possibilities. My question is along those lines, about companies and corporations. Your world-building assumed a future controlled by corporations (Ferrous vs. Mikkei) and I wonder if this was a reflection of a trendy trope (Continuum, Incorporated) or perhaps something more reflective of your worldview? Since I’m so late to this, I hope you are fully recovered by now. Thanks again!

    1. It’s not so much reflective of my world worldview insofar it’s a reflection of the current reality brought to a logical conclusion. I have no doubt that, in the future, it’s going to be corporations, not countries, taking the lead in space exploration and the inevitable colonization of other worlds.

  73. Will you ever release the original story plan/arc you had for One?

You’ve intimated that SyFy was surprised at just how passionate Dark Matter fans have been following the cancellation. Were you?

    1. “Will you ever release the original story plan/arc you had for One?

You’ve intimated that SyFy was surprised at just how passionate Dark Matter fans have been following the cancellation. Were you?”

Yes, I was both surprised and touched by the enormous support our little show has received. As for the ONE story arc – yes, hopefully, all will be revealed.

  74. Hi Joseph,
    hope you feeling better soon.

I already know that crowdfunding is not an option for the financial issue since you answered that one on twitter, thank you.

But I was wondering, let’s say worse case scenario no one pics up Dark Matter, would you consider (if that is even an option) crowdfunding than to do a Movie or let’s say mini episodes to give us all closure?

I know cowdfunding isn’t always the answer and brings its own set of problems but I would be amazing if we all could help at least bringen Dark Matter to an end.

I would definitely pursue all options, but crowdfunded just doesn’t seem like a viable one.

  75. Hi. Having two series seen cancelled unexpectedly (SGU, DM)… isn’t it possible that you put in a clause in a contract that you always can wrap up the story when cancelled or that the series will not end with a cliffhanger?

    1. “Hi. Having two series seen cancelled unexpectedly (SGU, DM)… isn’t it possible that you put in a clause in a contract that you always can wrap up the story when cancelled or that the series will not end with a cliffhanger?”

On the surface, a great idea – but, realistically, no broadcaster is going to agree to it.

  76. Hey Joe,

I hope you’re feeling better now?

I just wanted to say thank you for giving us a fantastic, genuinely interesting, engrossing and fresh Sci-Fi show that is easily up there with the greats like Star Trek, FarScape and FireFly (the latter two also sadly taken before their time). My partner and I started watching Dark Matter and were hooked from the very first scene…having to watch every episode back to back where we could as we had to know what happens next! Always a good sign of great writing, engaging stories, and intriguing (and impeccably acted!) characters.

I still can’t believe that SyFy haven’t renewed the show, I can only assume that someone there doesn’t like quality programs (I’m guessing they’re the same person/people that fund The Asylum movies and all the other cookie cutter monster/disaster movies SyFy keep churning out…).

We’re both keeping our fingers crossed for you getting some positive news on bringing Dark Matter back in one form or another.

My question for you is this; of all the crew of the Raza, who is your favourite and why?

While Anna & I love the entire crew, we especially love the way that Three’s character has developed over time…That said, we both think the Android is amazing too! 😉

Hey Stuart, thanks for the kind words. As I often respond when I’m asked this question, picking a favorite on the crew isn’t as easy as choosing your favorite child. I love them all for different reasons.

  77. Hi Joseph, is there any chance someone might still get inspired and be able to offer a new home, aside from a long shot of a miniseries? If someone that we have not thought about came forward and offered to take over and produce S4 & 5 would it still be feasible or has it already gone beyond that point?

IF someone were to come along and offer us a new home, we’d certainly take it. But, alas, we’ve explored all options up to this point.

  78. When will we find out if its a YES or no for dark matter. Hope its a yes. Cant waut to here

    1. “When will we find out if its a YES or no for dark matter. Hope its a yes. Cant waut to here”

Anytime within a 30 day window.

  79. How about some love story for Five? It’s so sad to see such smart and beautiful girl spending cold nights all alone 🙁

  80. Hey Joe,
so today I was searching for Dark Matter Merchandise and their really isn’t much out there 🙁 wish is really sad.

I think we all from Team Raza would love to get our hands on some merch.
Is their a chance you know where to get some other’s than DVD’s ?

Maybe putting some up (selling) on kickstarted would be an option?

Prodigy Pictures, the DM production company, holds the merchandising rights and, despite repeated requests, are in no rush to capitalize on the fan demand. I don’t really get it.

  81. Hello from Denmark ! Was it your intention via hints we have so far about the evil destructive mind possessing Dark Matter aliens could turn out to be inter-dimensional demons of the Lucifer/Satan biblical ilk that can be exorcised or the exact opposite ? Thankyou for giving us the chance to ask 🙂

    1. “Hello from Denmark ! No, there was never any intention to give them a biblical tie-in. Interesting, though.

      1. Thankyou for answering my question !
With your background in Stargate (living ancient Egyptian Gods) and your Douglas Adams quote ( his Dirk Gently found Norse Gods alive but unwell living in the 20th Century ) , mention of Star Trek ( with their Bajor wormhole alien Gods) could lead well read fans like myself to the interpretation that the black eye alien possession from the other dimension was an attempt by ´´alien´´ equivalents of the demons of Roman Catholic & Jewish traditions to enter the 3rd dimension from the 4th dimension…… even if it was subconcious cultural influences in your background inspiring your writing ( & mine in jumping to conclusions right after sleeping on & digesting your ´´The Dwarf Star Conspiracy´´ episode with foreknowledge of 3´s parasite from season 2 🙂 )

  82. So, if DM doesn’t work out, what about that space based (even better, MOONbase based) Anthony Lemke/Ennis Esmer buddy cop show?! 🙂 They’re great together!

    (I’m kinda only half joking…) 🙂

  83. Hi Joseph!
I know you can’t really speak for Paul Mulie, but how is he doing with the uncertainty? Thanks.

He’s doing fine, spending time with his family in B.C.

  84. Hello Joe,

Hope you feel better soon. It’s 2am and I should be asleep.

    1. What’s your earliest childhood memory?
    2. Sorry I forgot to enter the $50 million lottery.
    3. Where’s Ivon? I haven’t heard from him in ages.
    4. What size were the black ships in comparison to other ships on Dark Matter?
    5. Do you have plans on revealing who the old guy with Rook in Season 1 was?

    Cheers, Chev

      Hey Chev,

      1. I remember my mother singing Mary had a little lamb to me when I was very young – and me crying because I thought it incredibly sad.

      2. I need to check my tickets. Thanks for reminding me.

      3. Ivon is hard at work on his personal projects. And, of course, fantasy football.

      4. They were A LOT bigger. Let me rustle up a size chart for you.

      5. The old guy with Rook in season 1 was an alien. He mentions the fact that the body he inhabits is only in its twenties, suggesting that inhabiting a regular human being over time is not ideal. Which is why they need TWO.

  85. I love the diversity of the show, from the simple foxy captain of the Riza, to the sly kick ass Asian emporer. The twist and turns are often as impossible to predict as where the blank drive will end up! Save this show. And thank you to the creators.

  86. Thank you for keeping us all informed in what is going on or more importantly, what’s not going on. Thank you for being apart of my favourite shows that have helped shape who I am, first there was Stargate SG1 & now Dark Matter. I also look forward to all future shows.

  87. Hi! Joe . I got tweet from SYFY regarding Star Trek Discovery so it immediately dawned on me that maybe that was the reason they cancelled DARK MATTER. Maybe they didn’t want them to compete against each other when it could have been a blessing. Don’t give up yet. Maybe Reed Hastings changes his mind. Go #TeamRaza

No, that definitely had nothing to do with it. I wish the Star Trek Discovery team well on their premiere.

  88. I am glad to hear you are feeling better.
I’m not supposed ot be online much yet. Looking forward to reading all the questions and replies soonish.

  89. I said it over on Reddit and I’ll say it here, you’re good to the fans and you have my viewership (or readership!) however this works out. I loved all three Stargate series and it’s one of the reasons I tuned into Dark Matter.

Reading through the other Q&As here, if somehow you couldn’t get the miniseries, but could get the anime option would the cast voice their own characters? I won’t lie, while I’m glad you won’t leave us hanging and we’ll still get to follow our crew via paper form, I’m so impressed with the cast (and really the whole crew!) that I would love to even just hear them if not being able to see them kick ass.

My other question got answered which is about the soundtrack. I’ve been re-watching and more than once I hear the instrumental piece and think “Oh, I like that!”

I’ll ask one last off the wall question – television drives me crazy is how little the story seems to be valued by networks. Either they commission great shows that get axed because money or they let shows linger too long because money. Not saying money shouldn’t matter only that it seems to be the only thing that matters. I might be asking a REALLY big question, but what do you think is the biggest issue in the way networks think and if you could revamp the entire process, or even patch the current one, how would you fix this problem? Honestly, I’m so tired of getting invested in shows only be told by the networks that apparently my eyeballs aren’t worth enough 🙁 Maybe this is my lot as a science fiction fan.

Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Yes! If we went the anime route, I’d definitely want the cast to voice their characters.

Firstly, I look forward to a day when the accepted ratings system catches up with 20th century technology. Not 21st century tech. I’d be happy with 20th century tech. Secondly, I think executives should be mindful of their viewers. Cancelling a show without offering longtime viewers any sort of closure is, quite frankly, pretty disrespectful. And that type of dismissive decision making has a way of coming back to bite you in the ass.

  90. I also want to thank you for keeping us the fan so well informed of what’s going on and I will be part of the twitter storm again tonight!

  91. Did you have a cameo on Sg1 season 5 Wormhole X-Treme asking for donuts?
Why would anyone even consider cancelling any of your shows?
    How are the pugs doing?
Are you currently living in Toronto?
How long does it usually take to come up with a script for a single episode?
    Who is Kyden?
Who is TWO and Shaw’s daughter and how old is she now?
    Any upcoming projects of yours?
When did you start your work on Sg1?

Thank you for reaching out to the fans. I love your work and I hope you continue with writing/producing. The legacy of dark matter will live on forever in my heart.

In fact, yes, I did have a cameo in Wormhole X-Treme. And my line was: “Hey! What happened to all the donuts?”

I take it that it’s easier to cancel a show if you have no personal investment in it.

Down to one pug, Suji, and a frenchie, Lulu. They’re old – and fine.

I am currently living in Toronto.

It really depends. I wrote Episode 304, our time loop episode, in a little over a day. Usually two weeks is the average.

Kryden. And, hopefully, we’ll find out in the miniseries.

Rebecca and Shaw’s daughter is…their daughter. We’ll also find out how old she is in the miniseries. Hopefully.

I have a bunch of pilots I’d like to go out with, and some interesting opportunities I’d like to explore. But Dark Matter first!

I started my work on SG-1 prior to the show’s fourth season.

  92. Hello Mr Mallozzi. Been a fan since Stargate SG-1 S1E1. If Dark Matter does not continue in live action format, is that a chance it can continue in some other form, such as going back to comics?

    1. “Hello Mr Mallozzi. Been a fan since Stargate SG-1 S1E1. If Dark Matter does not continue in live action format, is that a chance it can continue in some other form, such as going back to comics?”

Yes, this is certainly a possibility.

  93. Also, without giving away too many spoilers, but because we all are dying to know, what can you tell us about THE BLACK SHIPS!

    1. “Also, without giving away too many spoilers, but because we all are dying to know, what can you tell us about THE BLACK SHIPS!”

      They’re an alien armada!

  94. “And that type of dismissive decision making has a way of coming back to bite you in the ass.”

In the future, I will certainly be less likely to watch any show that has SyFy involved financing. I was bitten by the cancelling of The Border on CBC, so I’m certainly twice shy. I thought Showcase did the right thing by allowing Continuum (as others have mentioned) a conclusion.

I’m very surprised another broadcaster hasn’t jumped at the idea of getting a guaranteed 600K American viewers. By comparison, Orphan Black, which was on BBCAmerica was getting 300k American viewers.

Good luck with the Twitter storm tonight. Thaks for everyting Joe!

  95. I’m sorry if this triple posts, or something but I’m not sure I am doing it correctly, haha… So.

Hello Sir, Thanks for opening up for questions, I have to say the interaction and the complete openness you and the cast have, are one of the reasons my favorite shows become favorites. The show itself, true, but fan interaction is just amazing, and I think I speak for many of us when I say how grateful we really are for your willingness to share. Three questions for the moment…

    1. Technical: for the scenes with one actor portraying two characters in the same frame, was a technodolly used? I’ve seen in depth discussion on Orphan Black about the wonder and the frustration of dear old “dolly”, and am curious… Or was it done with other ‘old school’ (haha) camera/ fx sorcery? How was that to film either way?

2.Bts: Your writing utterly fascinates me, and is very inspiring. In all of your projects, but especially DM, what sparked the idea? Do you write characters first, or plot, generally speaking. Where do you find you do your best writing? And do you use a program like Final Draft, or do you type it all in as you go… As someone who daydreams of scriptwriting, I’m curious, haha. What I find amazing is as you mentioned above, you had to write “isn’t that a paradox” pretty last minute, and it turned out to be a fan favorite! 🙂

3:The campaign: I am curious if there is anywhere #razacrew could send physical mail… I know Twitter is an amazing tool, but would physical mailbags full of fans dedication going somewhere make a difference? I heard NCIS fans sent paper clips to CBS, and flooded the mail room (lol) but perhaps postcards, handwritten letters etc… I’m not sure if that would mean much to anyone, but it seems worth a shot, unless that would only make (dark) matters worse? (Ha) Just looking for ideas. 🙂

This is pretty long, my apologies. Thank you for all you do, and for sharing your brain child with us… For giving so many people out there a sense of family. 🙂

    1. Hoping that worked, lol. I’m currently waiting to get out of Twitter jail – second time tonight… and am enjoying reading and re reading previous answers! Thanks again for doing this! 🙂

    2. “I’m sorry if this triple posts, or something but I’m not sure I am doing it correctly, haha… So.

1. I was a little and a lot of both. I believe we produced a behind the scenes feature on the process.

      2. Although every show is ultimately about its characters, I always come up with an interesting premise first. I love the theme of redemption, the notion of individuals attempting to undo past mistakes, the notions of good and evil. When I script, I use MovieMagic Screenwrite.

      3. Sadly, the time for sending mail has passed.

  96. Wow, what a brilliant and in depth Q&A session. Thank you Joe, so much for taking time to answer all these questions.
Thank you also for clearing up the background to One’s demise. I’m so relieved you didn’t want to kill him off and that it was nowt to do with Marc B either. I really loved how Marc played One’s character, subtly different from the other crew members who were (unbeknownst to them) ‘used’ to their life in crime. Great writing!

Thank you for giving us Dark Matter, Joe.
I really do hope you hear good news soon 😁

  97. Is there any way you might post more scripts? As a budding writer, I really admire your work and appreciate being able to read produced scripts.

In addition, thank you for all of the inspiration, hard work, and dedication! I can’t express how much this family of fans appreciate both your tenacity and daily updates. Also thank the cast and crew for their work on such a delightful series! Here’s to hoping we get a miniseries wrap-up, comic book, anime, or any other form of more Dark Matter!

    Thanks and God bless!

Of course. I’d be happy to post more scripts. I’ll put together a poll to see which episode fans would most like to read.

  98. I was a huge fan of sci-fi & fantasy as a kid, reading books by authors like Ray Bradbury (Martian Chronicles), Orson Scott Card’s (Ender Saga), Asimov etc! I grew up on Star Trek Orig, TNG, and Dr. Who but I left it behind as I got older going to college and what not. Then in the early 2000’s while at a friends house I watched a episode of SG1 and it was great, and I remembered I love this stuff!

After that I did everything possible to find back episodes and stay on top of new ones, and my appetite was insatiable. All these years later and Dark Matter is one of my favorites. I waited patiently every year for a new season and every week I had the same routine on Sat morning drinking my coffee with my den door closed and the wife and kids giving me the peace to watch my fave show!

You sir are an creative genius, amazing writer and a extraordinary visionary. I’m a huge fan of your work and appreciate everything that you do, in my mind you are right up there with Bradbury or Card as a favorite writer and as icing on the cake.. you’re a fellow Canadian. I swear the best sci-fi comes out of Canada 🙂

I just want to say thanks for everything, I sure hope you get to complete Dark Matter in one form or another and I’m really looking forward to whatever creative journey you have in store for your fans next.

Thanks so much for taking the time to write this. Greatly appreciated.

  99. If its not too late to ask a question I had some ideas for you. Idk know if you got my tweets but you could put the episodes on your blog and if money would be a problem you could try to get donations to help pay for it. Or you could tell networks about getting donations to help cover the costs. Idk about you but I cannot lose dark matter so please don’t give up. we can find a way for dark matter to continue and get the costs covered. its not time for dark matter to end just yet

Writing and posting 26 episodes to the blog sadly would not be very practical. But I understand fans desire to get an ending.

  100. Hi, first things first, a big thank you for all your doings about Dark Matter. I wish this campaign to be successful, but even in case of failure, you have done something trully amazing, you have bring its fanbase together for this, which I feel as a very rare thing, so …. amazing, thank you.

Now to the question. Today, Anthony Lemke posted this: https://twitter.com/ranthonylemke/status/911394771826028545

And this brings me to an idea – if the show will be renewd, would you be hypotheticaly willing to take some small, minor role in one of the episode? For fans? You know, in fanbase eyes, you are the same (or even bigger) hero as the crew and I believe, being just a row in closing credits is … a pitty. Being on screen, much later, when some tweetstorms will be forgotten, people still could point on your character and say – Yes, that is the man, who saved Dark Matter … Hard to do that with credits name …

Ha, thank you for this, but I definitely do my best work behind the camera.

  101. Have you ever thought of NOT putting cliffhangers in your season finales, and just starting a new story if and when the series gets renewed for another season? I mean, is it more important to you to have some cool twist in the season finale than to give the fans closure if the show gets canceled?

    1. “Have you ever thought of NOT putting cliffhangers in your season finales, and just starting a new story if and when the series gets renewed for another season? I mean, is it more important to you to have some cool twist in the season finale than to give the fans closure if the show gets canceled?”

The nature of the show is a narrative filled with twists, turns, shocks, and surprises. There’s no way to wrap up all the arcs in play or answers all the unanswered questions at the end of every season and start over.

      1. You couldn’t have wrapped up the corporate war storyline, and left the beginning of the alien invasion for the next season? It wouldn’t have wrapped up ALL the story arcs, but at least it wouldn’t have left the fans wondering about the fate of the characters. It would have ended the season on a semi-hopeful note rather than the impending doom that will be the series finale if you can’t find someone to continue it, which let’s be honest, is a HUGE long shot.

I mean, when a show gets canceled, there’s always talk of having it saved by another network, but how often does that actually happen? Everyone starts talking about how Netflix saves shows, but I can only think of one show that they’ve saved in this way; Community. Arrested Development doesn’t really count, since that was a revival of a show that was canceled seven years before they started producing their own content.

How many shows today are successful enough to survive to a planned conclusion? Or even lucky enough to have advance notice of their impending cancellation? Not very many by my count. Every show is a crapshoot and even if one season does well, the next season may tank in the ratings. Which means that about 90% of shows today will never have an ending, since cliffhanger season finales seem to be obligatory now.

In other words, you write cliffhanger season finales knowing that there is a very strong possibility that the fans will be left in the lurch since networks cancel low rated shows at the drop of a hat.

If by some miracle, you do get someone to pick up the show for a fourth season, are you going to use it to wrap up the story arcs, or will you end it on another cliffhanger and then hope they give you a fifth season? Because while I love the series (as do my friends) the ratings have been dropping and at this point, a fourth season to give the show a proper ending is about the best we can hope for.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see the show stay on the air for many more years, but I’m a realist and I know that’s not going to happen. Just like I know CBS is going to cancel the show Zoo, after ending that on a cliffhanger. I want to see it come back for a fourth season, but the ratings have been dropping and in TV land, ratings are everything. Stick a fork in it, it’s done. And it’s such a waste because they could have easily ended it on a hopeful note and then started the whole kidnapped baby plot later if there was another season. But nope, they HAD to go for the cliffhanger. 🙁

Joss Whedon managed to have satisfying season finales through five seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on the WB and that show had plenty of twists and turns, so it CAN be done.

  102. Pretty lame that you never approved my comments. I guess wishing you, the cast, crew and all the fans all the very best is not welcomed unless it comes in the exact form that suits your purposes unrevealed to us. You can’t just turn fan love on an off like a faucet.

Don’t know what you’re talking about. I haven’t deleted a legitimate comment in years.

  103. Hello.
Being an industry veteran, could you give advice, on which good quality show/series are out there that I can watch in the meantime? Possibly something you admire or watch yourself?
Will you tell us later which parties were approached for Dark Matter pick up and how it turned out with each of them?
P.S. Thank you and everyone involved for making DM!

I’m a big fan of Black Mirror. I also enjoyed The Handmaid’s Tale. If you’d be willing to give anime a try, Cowboy Bebop is a series that greatly influenced Dark Matter.

  104. I wanted to say that the thing that enjoy most about Dark Matter, is the rich, inventive, confident plotting. It’s difficult to explain what a difference it makes when you know that the story is going somewhere definite, interesting, and satisfying. And Dark Matter has superb plotting, I never cease to be pleased and surprised at how good the stories are. So, thank you, for the care you took, for the shows so far, and I hope very much you can show us more of your craft soon, with the miniseries.

Thanks, Matthew. Sitting on the story for 5+ years allowed me to come up with a fairly detailed narrative game plan including story arcs, major and minor, and the beginning and end to each of our characters journeys. It was a lot of fun seeding in hints and set-ups that would pay off episodes, sometimes seasons down the line.

      1. Yes, the series always had that feeling of a world that existed well outside the boundaries of the particular episode or plot arc, and it made the world solid and real. Great, classic story-telling.
