Apologies for not checking in sooner. I’ve been out of commission today, sick and sleeping off what I assume to be a touch of food poisoning. Was it the curry ramen? A fried oyster? The lychee sake that tasted like dish washing soap? I’ll avoid a Murder on the Orient Express gag here out of respect for spoilerphobes, but let me be clear – it WAS one of them.
Anyway, following my four hour mid-afternoon nap, I jumped online and discovered the Dark Matter Council was in the midst of another fabulous twitter campaign, perhaps my favorite yet –
I’m amazed by all of you who were inspired by many of the same mainstays of sci-fi that led me down this road. Asimov, Clarke, Ellison, Alien, The Thing, Planet of the Apes, Star Trek: The Original Series…to name but a few.
I’m also touched and grateful to those of you who mentioned my name and my work, alongside those of my incredible cast and crew, as one of the things you love about Dark Matter.
Tomorrow night, we launch another tweet storm (9 pm EDT/6 pm PDT) to batter twitter…and whoever you care to tag with our deluge of ten of thousands of tweets! Who, hunh? Who, HUNH?! WHO?!! Follow @DarkMatterFTL for all the latest and tomorrow’s secret hashtag!
But before we storm the castle yet again, I’m going to dedicate this blog to you, the fans, and your healthy curiosity. Got some burning questions about the campaign, yours truly, or anything Dark Matter-related? Well post them in the comments section because I’ll be wading in with answer, ANSWERS, ANSWERS!!!

Besides being incredibly talented and genuinely nice (I personally place great weight on the latter), they were all funny in different ways. At its heart, the show – and these characters – possess an undercurrent of humor that allows audience to really connect with them.
Feel free to disregard this question if the answer is a potential spoiler but since we were first introduced to the ‘Mirror’ Raza crew I’ve been curious about what happened to Five in the other universe. Was there ever a plan to revisit that in a potential season four or five?

Yes, there was a back-up story related to alt FIVE I had in my back pocket. It ultimately depended on whether or not I had the opportunity to tell this particular story.

Well, she has learned she has a name – Suki – and the plan is to work it into her story. I have a lot of fun developments planned for her!

They say Game of Thrones has a budget of about 10 million/episode. I’ll just say we’re significantly less than a third of that.

OK, Boss. One question I’ve always wondered about that applies to many characters on many shows:
Was killing off One part of the original plan, or was the death of One a change brought on by contract, personality, other offers, or what (if you even CAN discuss such things, as both you and he are professionals whose public conduct towards each other and all cast/crew is founded on a balance of professional reputation and trust, even during disagreements)?
Follow-up: IF killing One off was part of a larger planned event, would Corso make a return to the storyline in S04 or S05?

As I’ve already mentioned elsewhere, the killing off of ONE was not part of my original plan and was not brought on by contract, personality, or other offers. Marc Bendavid is a fantastic actor and friend and if I had my way, would still be on the show. It was a battle I fought but didn’t win – that I still regret. As for why? A desire to shake things up.
I actually wanted to bring Marc back for an episode in season 3 but, due to a scheduling conflict, had to scrap the story and come up with another script in short notice – what turned out to be Episode 309, “Isn’t That A Paradox?”

As I mentioned, if the miniseries is a no-go, I’d prefer to finish the story in comic book form. While the idea of a book (or a book series) is intriguing, I have neither the time, patience, or talent to do what so many of my favorite authors are able to deliver with regularity.
Follow-up question: What about an on-line Motion Comic, similar to the HALO video game mini-series? Bring in the original cast to do voice-over. 🙂

Hmmm. To be honest, I’m not familiar with this.

I was going to mention this, too. Unlike the tv show funding, which is needed too quickly for a crowdfunding campaign to possible or effective, comic book campaigns can be VERY successful, and there would be more runway to raise funds, ect.

Favorite moment? So many. The first day of shooting, watching the actors in character. Watching the the director’s edit of the pilot and having that final twist land. Every time I would put out a new script and go down to set and see the cast at their chairs, madly reading them by the light of their phones.
The hardest are always the character deaths: Nyx, Devon, and ONE. Even Misaki, who was a villain…but WHAT A VILLAIN!
If we’re unable to land the miniseries, I may reach out to Dark Horse Comics about finishing the story where it started.
As for what’s next – I’ve been taking meetings. I have pilots to go out with and have been invited to work on a number of amazing projects. But first, I think I’d take some time off.

As for a crowdfunding campaign, we’re investigating all avenues but this one isn’t as easy as it seems.
As for new adventures: The war against the aliens, the burgeoning Android rebellion, the crew becoming Agents of The Galactic Authority. Oh, and wrapping up that ONE storyline.

For some reason, the production company is frustratingly reticent to put out merchandise. Maybe they believe there’s no money in it. I don’t know.
The white script is the official script distributed to the cast at the beginning of prep. Along the way, changes will be made as we head toward production. If you like, and you can remind me, I’ll post the final shooting draft if you’d like to compare.
As for what color denotes what stage, a lot of the time it depends on the production. I wrote about it back in my Stargate days:

I have answers to all the questions, conclusions to those side stories as well as a few of them will dovetail into the bigger stories. Of course, there may side stories that fans would prefer had ended differently…
The biggest change was the character of ONE and his storyline. In the original plan, he was supposed to still be with us – and, while his death did make for a shocking turn, I wasn’t happy about making this change. Marc Bendavid, who played ONE, is a terrific guy, very talented, and I loved his portrayal.

Definitely no to “syfy” stories, but sci-fi = yes! 🙂 I grew up reading comic books, SF from the grandmasters, sci-fi movies – and continue to do so. I always wanted to work in sci-fi but didn’t think I ever would…until Paul and I landed a staff position on Stargate: SG-1.

I actually got my start in animation and, while I have much respect for the field, I don’t think Dark Matter would be suited to North American animation. Anime on the other hand….

It would really depend on the project. Dark Matter is, by its very nature, the type of show that peppers its viewers with twists and turns, and ends each episode on a mini-cliffhanger.

Yes. Comics is a possibility. The only thing holding me back would be time.
If a Japanese anime company reached out, on the other hand, I’d be all for it!

We’ve settled in nicely. We’re at a new place until the end of the month, then move back to our regular abode (which you have visited) at the top of the month. We’re looking to buy but, so far, haven’t had much luck. Big open concepts with a terrace located close to a park or green area are apparently hard to come by in downtown T.O.

It was really a matter of respect – and familiarity. In the case of Teku, he was like a father to Ryo so he refers to him by his first name in much the same way that Teku refers to Ryo by his first name. Same applies to the longstanding friendship between Misaki and Ryo.

Dark Matter is all about upending established tropes, be it character stereotypes or narrative chestnuts.
I have two favorites, both of which are featured on Dark Matter. The first is time travel since it allows for so much humor. The other is Alternate Universes that allow me to explore the road not taken.

I don’t know if I have a favorite all time series. Again, Dark Matter is obvious – and all the Stargate. But, again, steering clear of any of the ones I’ve been involved with, I really loved ST:TOS and Farscape.

Just a comment, I just wanted you (and crew) to know you are truly a stand up guy for dealing with such a devastating end to what could have been a long lasting classic like all the SG series. I honestly don’t know how you could even start another project knowing there could be a premature cancelation like this one.

As for starting another project knowing there could be a premature cancellation – that’s the nature of the business. In the case of Dark Matter, it doesn’t really make much sense since, as I pointed out, the ratings were strong, other shows the network owned received pick ups, and we reached out to see if we could make ‘the numbers work” and were told no. It’s clear now that there was nothing we could have done to avoid the cancellation. When all was said and done, the decision makers didn’t like the show (this is assuming they actually watched it).
With the departure of Chris Regina from SYFY, I can’t help but wonder if there are office politics involved, in which Dark Matter just happened to caught up. It sounds like that whole, “resigned to pursue other interests” thing, which of course is a euphemism. There seems to be something else going on there.
I love Dark Matter! It’s the best program on SYFY!

As much as I’m eagering for completion of the story, I would not like for there to be neither mini-series, nor comic books. It’s not what you wanted, it’s not what you’ll be pleased to do. Your show raised the bar so high, it will be painful to watch it lowers. In that case I’d really prefer just to stop. With kind of a false hope of getting proper developing in the future.
Nevertheless, I’m anxious why you ain’t even considering possibility of crowdfunding. Maybe we aren’t able to fund a whole season, but we sure as hell able to pay for sets rentals. Many people suggesting it. Many simply want it. It could give you – and us – more time for discover hidden options. And for wrapping our minds around the fact that there might not be any.

Two questions: One, I’ve noticed that Four talked a lot less than Ryo – it definitely made his words count for more when he used them. Is there an in-story reason as to why this is, or is it just to contrast the two characters?
And two, have you picked out names for Two’s daughter and Five’s sister? If so, would you be willing to share them or would they be too big of spoilers?

Bioware released Mass Effect: Paragon Lost and Dragon Age: Dawn of the Seeker by FUNimation & Production IG & they both looked great. The cast would be the voice actors for it, as it wouldn’t really work without them. 😀

Do you hold the IP for Dark Matter or does SyFy? I figure they own the rights to the episodes and at least a contract regarding future screen related endeavors, but I don’t know how this side of the industry actually works.

The rights are held by Prodigy Pictures and Dark Horse Comics.
It’s a shame that international channels can not club together to pick the series up, in the UK it is popular enough to get its own aftershow show, after dark. Clearly they can create some of their own content even if the American channel does not. Wish this could happen. Thank you for what you have given us and your ongoing efforts.

I’m still desperately hoping for the normal live-action conclusion, but I concur that an anime adaptation would by far be the most fitting next-best thing. Supernatural got one and it didn’t even “need” one! So is there any particular way to get the word out in Japan about Dark Matter? It’s a possibility. The problem with comics is that they require a lot of time and effort (especially a two season arc) without much in the way of payment – certainly not in comparison to television.

Dark Matter fandom has been nothing short of astounding – but, sadly, the 2 season possibility is off the table.

I just wonder, what would it take for Syfy to admit they might have made a mistake and reconsider their decision? Or is it simply as a matter of principle now to avoid a precedential case? I also want to say, that without a doubt I’d even love to get a short final DM season. It seemed to be almost impossible too in the case of Continuum (Roger Cross was also part of it) two years ago. But Simon Barry somehow worked it out and created a very satisfying ending. I have trust that you can do that for Dark Matter too and I really hope you will get the chance.
Finally I’d like to say how much I like Dark Matter, it was always amazing to watch and for me it was the first series, that had some actual “Firefly vibes” for me. A big part of this besides the fine stories is the incredible cast. I don’t know how you did it, but your choice of all of them, main and support cast members, was pretty much perfect! A bit thx for that and give them a hug from me!
So I’m keeping my fingers crossed for at least that final short season.

First, I don’t think syfy would ever change their minds. As I already pointed out, our show ran on their network for three seasons so I don’t see how a fourth season would suddenly change their financial model. What I believe happened is that: a) They spent money on new programming and felt they didn’t need us to fill a time slot, b) Our champion at Syfy New York/Acquisitions, Chris Regina, left. c) And, to be honest, I don’t think the decision makers knew much about the show.

In Episode 208, “Stuff To Steal, People To Kill”, AU Kal Varrick sends a report back to the G.A. and warns them that the ship’s security system is an android that can only be turned off with a command code. Unfortunately, when our crew came out of stasis, they’d forgotten it.

And I love the idea of going with highly detailed but realistic anime format (FIVE already has the perfect role in that regard.) Just look at the Five Centimeters per Second series – the detail is incredible. Mr. Mallozzi, SG-1 seemed to evolve naturally in regards to character relationships. The characters start out as strangers and then become a family as the years go on. Dark Matter follows that line of natural evolution, but did it much faster. The cast is very close and their chemistry is obvious onscreen, but the quicker evolution of the family unit was intentional on my part, owing to the fact that, unlike SG-1 or the Atlantis expedition or the crew of the Destiny, the crew of The Raza had no one to rely on but each other.

In that scenario, I guess you could call them distributors.
It seems to me, and I think many others, that the Science Fiction genre isn’t particularly liked by the networks. While certainly there are exceptions, it seems like great SciFi shows get cancelled all the time. It’s disheartening to us devoted fans. In your experience do you feel this is accurate in the industry, or are we maybe just a bit sensitive (we are a passionate group after all)?

I do agree up to a certain point, but I think that’s changing thanks to the likes of Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, even CW!

The SyfyInternational broadcasters have spent money on the show every season, paying a license fee for the right to air the series. They are a crucial piece of the financial puzzle and they would have been there for us in season 4, but Syfy US pulled out, leaving a gap in the show’s financing.
Dark matter has to keep going it’s not an option
Questions, questions… but trying to stay away from the stressful topic of Schrodinger’s Miniseries for now…
1) As someone who has always been interested in TV writing and production, it was great to read the pilot script. Is there any chance of publishing any kind of scripts book? I know the other writers’ work would have rights issues, but maybe just the Mallozzi and Mullie scripts might be possible, with some behind-the-scenes info, restored scenes, and so on?
2) The original SF series with a 5-year story plan was Babylon 5. (With which I think Dark Matter always seems to have lots of parallels – not so much in style or story but in ethos.) When planning B5, Joe Straczynski always said he had put in “trapdoors” for all of the central characters, so in the event of an actor suddenly becoming unavailable, there was a path for them to be replaced seamlessly(ish), without undoing the plot and all of the foreshadowing and build-up already put in place. What’s your approach when you’re planning Dark Matter, which also has a lot of intricately set up elements that don’t pay off until several seasons down the line? Is there a set of backup plans or are you happier to trust to good luck and write around whatever comes up as and when it happens?

1. No plans to publish a script book, but I’d be happy to upload more Dark Matter scripts if the interest is there.
2. The trapdoor approach would have been hard to accomplish with Dark Matter because it was less a big picture story and really all about the journeys of these characters. So, to answer your question – no back-up plan.
Not sure if you’ve answered this but what network or streaming service is the final potential partner. If you haven’t why not, I don’t see the harm.

Oh… and another thing if I may Joe….. as Sci-Fi has all these space/time events, you could always have the Raza pass through one of those space/time events, bringing it back in time before ONE was killed, and move forward from there… just a thought, in the event we get our wishes answered positively… 🙂

1. Each episodes takes about 7 days to shoot (sometimes a day more, rare a day less). Occasionally, we will block shoot scenes across various episodes if there’s an availability issue – either to do with an actor or a location.
2. I think that if MGM does relaunch Stargate, we would need to find out what happened to everyone eventually – SG-1, the Atlantis expedition, and the crew of the Destiny.

Well, from what I can piece together, the real news is that a Season 4 and Season 5 option are now completely dead. Frankly that shocks me because in terms of a campaign of support we are just getting started. I for one have zero interest in the alternative time line of a miniseries / movie cap like Serenity or Peacewars. (Neither do I have even the slightest interest in other medium like comics or whatnot.) If you do go to air with it I won’t be watching. It is of greater interest to me to leave the story in limbo so that I can imagine the likely conclusions extrapolated. And long term the world you have created will have greater value unimpaired by stop gap endings even financially.
I had planned on the fact that after such offers had been pending were exhausted an honest to God push to netflix for 2 full seasons will suceed. But waiting for an unsatisfactory truncated ending hinders that and really your drop dead date is already arrived in ways with sets slated for destruction.
The crew and cast need to get on with their lives and if there is no optimal full-time option then I prefer to let you all go and do your next great thing. The characters and world of Dark Matter live on and will always be loved in the hearts of its fans.
Food poisoning can sometimes just be a result of your immune system being run down by stress and exertion such that the bugs that are there get you that would not normally. You need a complete rest and to feel at home for a few days at the least to get your system restored to function. Delegate and let others work. Doctors orders.
I will go back to my life in exile and leave the campaign. However I want to thank first you for giving us a great piece of culture to both enjoy and enlighten us. And it is not the first time you have done so nor the last. I greatly look forward to your next project. The cast and crew wow I like so many fans will truly miss seeing you. I will be following and supporting the careers of all involve in so far as a fan and consumer of art can. Blessings and Salutations to You all! I wish you all good thoughts, good words and good deeds.
To my fellow fans who supported the campaign I am so sorry for your loss. I have shared the attachment that many of you have to these wonderful characters that determined to define / redefine themselves in the face of all odds and a galactic wide society bent on determing both their identity and their fate for them. It is little wonder that we cling to this narrative as we hope to see a positive outcome to such overwhelming odds. I want that you all be and live that outcome. Each and everyone of you should pursue your dreams in life because you are all just as bad ass as the crew of the Raza. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Interestingly, Devon’s arc turned out slightly different than planned. There was a whole through line involving suspicion falling on him for a number of close calls with the G.A. At the end of Episode 207, rather than being killed he would turn a corner and come face to face with Inspector Kierkan. He’d be gone for a while, and then returned – but turned. Anyway, because of scheduling, we had to abandon this original storyline and wrapped things up quicker than we would have liked.
My favorite comfort food? Chocolate.

My favorite part about Dark Matter is the characters development. Number 3 and the android always makes me laugh.

I’ve been intentionally vague on timelines, but it’s been less than 10 years.

1. Yes. The character of Wexler played by Ennis Esmer. He was brilliant. So I unkilled him.
2. So long as I get what I need from a scene, the actors are free to improvise or offer alternate versions so I can pick and choose in the editing room. As for a specific example? Hmmm. Any scene featuring Anthony Lemke. 🙂

Here’s my question, Why was Devon even on the Raza? Like, what was his purpose? He was basically abandoned and killed and no one but Five even asked about him. The crew mentions Nyx post death frequently, but no one gives a crap about Devon. Nyx was the only one who cared about him.

In the case of both Nyx and Devon, the point of their arcs was to drive home the point that, despite seeking to become better people, the crew of The Raza are always in danger. And the same can be said for whoever comes in contact with them. Nyx’s death was tragic, but Devon’s death was equally tragic in that he sacrificed himself for Nyx – and nobody knew.
His final scene was truncated by another producer in the editing suite and, as a result, I don’t think this landed as well as it could have.

Judging by the tears in my partners eyes at that ending, I think it landed well enough.

Your world-building assumed a future controlled by corporations (Ferrous vs. Mikkei) and I wonder if this was a reflection of a trendy trope (Continuum, Incorporated) or perhaps something more reflective of your worldview? It’s not so much reflective of my world worldview insofar it’s a reflection of the current reality brought to a logical conclusion. I have no doubt that, in the future, it’s going to be corporations, not countries, taking the lead in space exploration and the inevitable colonization of other worlds.

I would definitely pursue all options, but crowdfunded just doesn’t seem like a viable one.

I just wanted to say thank you for giving us a fantastic, genuinely interesting, engrossing and fresh Sci-Fi show that is easily up there with the greats like Star Trek, FarScape and FireFly (the latter two also sadly taken before their time). My partner and I started watching Dark Matter and were hooked from the very first scene…having to watch every episode back to back where we could as we had to know what happens next! Always a good sign of great writing, engaging stories, and intriguing (and impeccably acted!) characters.

Hey Stuart, thanks for the kind words. As I often respond when I’m asked this question, picking a favorite on the crew isn’t as easy as choosing your favorite child. I love them all for different reasons.

Prodigy Pictures, the DM production company, holds the merchandising rights and, despite repeated requests, are in no rush to capitalize on the fan demand. I don’t really get it.

With your background in Stargate (living ancient Egyptian Gods) and your Douglas Adams quote ( his Dirk Gently found Norse Gods alive but unwell living in the 20th Century ) , mention of Star Trek ( with their Bajor wormhole alien Gods) could lead well read fans like myself to the interpretation that the black eye alien possession from the other dimension was an attempt by ´´alien´´ equivalents of the demons of Roman Catholic & Jewish traditions to enter the 3rd dimension from the 4th dimension…… even if it was subconcious cultural influences in your background inspiring your writing ( & mine in jumping to conclusions right after sleeping on & digesting your ´´The Dwarf Star Conspiracy´´ episode with foreknowledge of 3´s parasite from season 2 🙂 )

1. I remember my mother singing Mary had a little lamb to me when I was very young – and me crying because I thought it incredibly sad.

5. The old guy with Rook in season 1 was an alien. He mentions the fact that the body he inhabits is only in its twenties, suggesting that inhabiting a regular human being over time is not ideal. Which is why they need TWO.
ahhhhhh, so that’s what was going on there.
I love the diversity of the show, from the simple foxy captain of the Riza, to the sly kick ass Asian emporer. The twist and turns are often as impossible to predict as where the blank drive will end up! Save this show. And thank you to the creators.

I won’t lie, while I’m glad you won’t leave us hanging and we’ll still get to follow our crew via paper form, I’m so impressed with the cast (and really the whole crew!) that I would love to even just hear them if not being able to see them kick ass.
My other question got answered which is about the soundtrack. I’ve been re-watching and more than once I hear the instrumental piece and think “Oh, I like that!”
I’ll ask one last off the wall question – television drives me crazy is how little the story seems to be valued by networks. Either they commission great shows that get axed because money or they let shows linger too long because money. Not saying money shouldn’t matter only that it seems to be the only thing that matters. I might be asking a REALLY big question, but what do you think is the biggest issue in the way networks think and if you could revamp the entire process, or even patch the current one, how would you fix this problem? Honestly, I’m so tired of getting invested in shows only be told by the networks that apparently my eyeballs aren’t worth enough 🙁 Maybe this is my lot as a science fiction fan.

Yes! If we went the anime route, I’d definitely want the cast to voice their characters.
Firstly, I look forward to a day when the accepted ratings system catches up with 20th century technology. Not 21st century tech. I’d be happy with 20th century tech. Secondly, I think executives should be mindful of their viewers. Cancelling a show without offering longtime viewers any sort of closure is, quite frankly, pretty disrespectful. And that type of dismissive decision making has a way of coming back to bite you in the ass.

In the future, I will certainly be less likely to watch any show that has SyFy involved financing. I was bitten by the cancelling of The Border on CBC, so I’m certainly twice shy. I thought Showcase did the right thing by allowing Continuum (as others have mentioned) a conclusion.
I’m very surprised another broadcaster hasn’t jumped at the idea of getting a guaranteed 600K American viewers. By comparison, Orphan Black, which was on BBCAmerica was getting 300k American viewers.

1. Technical: for the scenes with one actor portraying two characters in the same frame, was a technodolly used? I’ve seen in depth discussion on Orphan Black about the wonder and the frustration of dear old “dolly”, and am curious… Or was it done with other ‘old school’ (haha) camera/ fx sorcery? How was that to film either way?
2.Bts: Your writing utterly fascinates me, and is very inspiring. In all of your projects, but especially DM, what sparked the idea? Do you write characters first, or plot, generally speaking. Where do you find you do your best writing? And do you use a program like Final Draft, or do you type it all in as you go… As someone who daydreams of scriptwriting, I’m curious, haha. What I find amazing is as you mentioned above, you had to write “isn’t that a paradox” pretty last minute, and it turned out to be a fan favorite! 🙂
3:The campaign: I am curious if there is anywhere #razacrew could send physical mail… I know Twitter is an amazing tool, but would physical mailbags full of fans dedication going somewhere make a difference? I heard NCIS fans sent paper clips to CBS, and flooded the mail room (lol) but perhaps postcards, handwritten letters etc… I’m not sure if that would mean much to anyone, but it seems worth a shot, unless that would only make (dark) matters worse? (Ha) Just looking for ideas. 🙂

What I find amazing is as you mentioned above, you had to write “isn’t that a paradox” pretty last minute, and it turned out to be a fan favorite! 🙂
3:The campaign: I am curious if there is anywhere #razacrew could send physical mail… I know Twitter is an amazing tool, but would physical mailbags full of fans dedication going somewhere make a difference? I heard NCIS fans sent paper clips to CBS, and flooded the mail room (lol) but perhaps postcards, handwritten letters etc… I’m not sure if that would mean much to anyone, but it seems worth a shot, unless that would only make (dark) matters worse? (Ha) Just looking for ideas. 🙂

1. I was a little and a lot of both. I believe we produced a behind the scenes feature on the process.
2. Although every show is ultimately about its characters, I always come up with an interesting premise first. I love the theme of redemption, the notion of individuals attempting to undo past mistakes, the notions of good and evil. When I script, I use MovieMagic Screenwrite.

I was a huge fan of sci-fi & fantasy as a kid, reading books by authors like Ray Bradbury (Martian Chronicles), Orson Scott Card’s (Ender Saga), Asimov etc! I grew up on Star Trek Orig, TNG, and Dr. Who but I left it behind as I got older going to college and what not. Then in the early 2000’s while at a friends house I watched a episode of SG1 and it was great, and I remembered I love this stuff!
After that I did everything possible to find back episodes and stay on top of new ones, and my appetite was insatiable. All these years later and Dark Matter is one of my favorites. I waited patiently every year for a new season and every week I had the same routine on Sat morning drinking my coffee with my den door closed and the wife and kids giving me the peace to watch my fave show!
You sir are an creative genius, amazing writer and a extraordinary visionary. I’m a huge fan of your work and appreciate everything that you do, in my mind you are right up there with Bradbury or Card as a favorite writer and as icing on the cake.. you’re a fellow Canadian. Idk know if you got my tweets but you could put the episodes on your blog and if money would be a problem you could try to get donations to help pay for it. Or you could tell networks about getting donations to help cover the costs. Idk about you but I cannot lose dark matter so please don’t give up. we can find a way for dark matter to continue and get the costs covered. its not time for dark matter to end just yet

Writing and posting 26 episodes to the blog sadly would not be very practical. But I understand fans desire to get an ending.

Have you ever thought of NOT putting cliffhangers in your season finales, and just starting a new story if and when the series gets renewed for another season? I mean, is it more important to you to have some cool twist in the season finale than to give the fans closure if the show gets canceled?

The nature of the show is a narrative filled with twists, turns, shocks, and surprises. There’s no way to wrap up all the arcs in play or answers all the unanswered questions at the end of every season and start over.
You couldn’t have wrapped up the corporate war storyline, and left the beginning of the alien invasion for the next season? It wouldn’t have wrapped up ALL the story arcs, but at least it wouldn’t have left the fans wondering about the fate of the characters. It would have ended the season on a semi-hopeful note rather than the impending doom that will be the series finale if you can’t find someone to continue it, which let’s be honest, is a HUGE long shot.
I mean, when a show gets canceled, there’s always talk of having it saved by another network, but how often does that actually happen? Everyone starts talking about how Netflix saves shows, but I can only think of one show that they’ve saved in this way; Community. Arrested Development doesn’t really count, since that was a revival of a show that was canceled seven years before they started producing their own content.
How many shows today are successful enough to survive to a planned conclusion? Or even lucky enough to have advance notice of their impending cancellation? Not very many by my count. Every show is a crapshoot and even if one season does well, the next season may tank in the ratings. Which means that about 90% of shows today will never have an ending, since cliffhanger season finales seem to be obligatory now.
In other words, you write cliffhanger season finales knowing that there is a very strong possibility that the fans will be left in the lurch since networks cancel low rated shows at the drop of a hat.
If by some miracle, you do get someone to pick up the show for a fourth season, are you going to use it to wrap up the story arcs, or will you end it on another cliffhanger and then hope they give you a fifth season? Because while I love the series (as do my friends) the ratings have been dropping and at this point, a fourth season to give the show a proper ending is about the best we can hope for.
Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see the show stay on the air for many more years, but I’m a realist and I know that’s not going to happen. Just like I know CBS is going to cancel the show Zoo, after ending that on a cliffhanger. I want to see it come back for a fourth season, but the ratings have been dropping and in TV land, ratings are everything. Stick a fork in it, it’s done. And it’s such a waste because they could have easily ended it on a hopeful note and then started the whole kidnapped baby plot later if there was another season. But nope, they HAD to go for the cliffhanger. 🙁
Joss Whedon managed to have satisfying season finales through five seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on the WB and that show had plenty of twists and turns, so it CAN be done.

I’m a big fan of Black Mirror. I also enjoyed The Handmaid’s Tale. If you’d be willing to give anime a try, Cowboy Bebop is a series that greatly influenced Dark Matter.

It’s difficult to explain what a difference it makes when you know that the story is going somewhere definite, interesting, and satisfying. And Dark Matter has superb plotting, I never cease to be pleased and surprised at how good the stories are. Thanks, Matthew. Sitting on the story for 5+ years allowed me to come up with a fairly detailed narrative game plan including story arcs, major and minor, and the beginning and end to each of our characters journeys. It was a lot of fun seeding in hints and set-ups that would pay off episodes, sometimes seasons down the line.
Yes, the series always had that feeling of a world that existed well outside the boundaries of the particular episode or plot arc, and it made the world solid and real. Great, classic story-telling.
