September 21, 2016: Tokyo Day #7!

Typhoon Malakas rolled through Tokyo late last night and most of yesterday was one long wet preamble to the storm.  To be honest, I didn’t mind so much.  It cleared out the crowds, clearly dampening many Tokyoites enthusiasm for shopping, and also cooled things down a few degrees.  Also, hey, I’m from Vancouver.  I love the rain.

So, while most of Tokyo was indoors, battening down the hatches, Akemi and I braved the elements – hatches brazenly unbattened – and hit Akihabara, aka Electric Town, aka Electrical Town, aka Anime Central, aka Geek Heaven.  Our two hour tour in photos –

While walking around looking for a lunch spot, I noticed this delicious looking pizza place.  What is that they’re serving up on that woman’s back?  Rosemary, cranberries, and fontina cheese?

Tonight, we had dinner at Sushi Tokami whose young chef has been wowing locals with his inventive, sometimes brazen ways.  Like offering paper thin sliced onions as a side dish.  Or serving uni two ways, raw and cooked, in the same bite.  And ending the meal with a unique take on the traditional tamago, served brûlée style.

Can I just say how much I love sake.  My good friend Ivon Bartok will vouch for this.  I’m not a wine guy, enjoy the rare beer, and even whisky is one (okay, maybe two) drink max.  But sake…  You know, what’s amazing?  How a mere two bottles can loosen up the storylines knotted in my head, allowing me to more effectively piece together the grand narrative puzzle I’ve designed.  As I’ve often said, I know where I’m going but, occasionally, figuring out how to get there is the challenge.  But, after last night, two big Holy Shit! character backstory elements snapped clearly into place.  But more of that in season 3.

Or, more specifically, Episodes 7 and 12.

  1. Still trying to catch up on the blogs, but wanted to be sure to note this day (9/20 for the United States). Was thinking of our Kelly Hurt (aka @AnneTeldy) today. Can’t believe it has been 4 years since she passed. Wanted to send love to her other friends and family out there.

  2. Wow, that really is anime central. I guess that’s the same place you were Periscoping from last night?

Two bottles of sake? That sounds like a lot. Are you sure it actually loosened up the creative knots or you just *think* it did? 🙂 Maybe you better run those plot twists by Paul before production just to be sure. 😉

  3. Ok, so besides food, what did you buy? Lots of cool figurines & cosplay ideas. You’re going to be so spoiled by all the good food you’ve eaten since on vacation that your taste buds will revolt once you get back home.

Love the last pic – bright lights & neon in the rain!

  4. Two crates of Sake to the Dark Matter office!!!

    Cheers, Chev

P.S that’s a lovely photo of you in the chair… Cute turtle socks.

  5. Hey buy me a dragon! They’re really cool.

I too, love sake. I’ve been a fan for over 20 years. But the hangovers are bad. Probably because I drink 2-3 bottles at a sitting. I just recently tried Tozai Snow Maiden nigori sake, and loved it. Great texture.

  6. Typhoons in Japan … always meant I was locked up on base for days. One bed in the bunkroom meant I slept behind the warm equipment racks. Never be “essential”. Or don’t join the Navy. Or both.

  7. But, after last night, two big Holy Shit! character backstory elements snapped clearly into place. After you sober up, I hope it makes as much sense. 😉 Hey, you’re working, is this a tax deductible trip?

Thanks for reminding us about AnneTeldy, Hilda! She sure made an impression on us.

  8. Escaped Malakas.
Tokami is interesting. Tossaki temaki and the collagen soup quite nice. Sato-san is friendly. Nigiri/shari size big, assuming perhaps Akemi had asked for josei size here too? Lol.
Forgot Sep 22 public holiday Tsukiji is closed. 🙁 Will need to find another morning activity.

  9. I think after all that walking you and Akemi should do that foot suction cup torture thing…..I mean therapeutic thing. 😉

  10. Looking forward to the sake infused Season 3 plots. That tiny square desert looks yummy and futuristic, like tasty space food. I like the giant ramen chairs but back food isn’t for me. Just had the worlds biggest sticky bun, I feel like the boa constrictor that swallowed the elephant in The Little Prince.

  11. Let’s make sure you get a lot of saki then when you get back to Vancouver so if you hit a creative wall, it can help.

So I have been so OUT OF TOUCH with life that I didn’t even know there was a typhoon threatening you. Glad it didn’t seem to affect your visit.

TamDixon & Chev: Thanks for saying something about @AnneTeldy. It’s important to remember those anniversaries because as the support fades from the immediate event, it seems that the family only remembers the date of a loved one’s passing. As special needs minister, many of the children had passed away due to complications of their disability, but we also served the needs of families with children with chronic or acute conditions, like cancer, etc., to help them (and also adults). Of course not everyone passed, but We would send cards out letting the families know that we were remembering too (and we had a celebration of life ceremony every year where everyone came up to say the name of their child, and carry their candle around the baptismal font where everyone joined hands and prayed together. And then we had a reception of food where we could share in fellowship and support. The cards seemed to really touch the families hearts. So while the ministry no longer exists (sadly) I personally have continued the tradition. I have an upcoming anniversary to remember, the 1st anniversary, of Patrick’s classmate, Jon, who seizure after a bad seizure. It hit very close to home for me. Following the death of Lisa Broome last year, it was just one death after another that I barely stopped crying for one when another happened. I’m hoping 2017 will be a better year.

    Those chairs look SO comfortable.

But back to happier things — I can’t wait until season 3 of Dark Matter and following along with the blog to get all the inside scoop.

  12. Body pillows are creepy, more so the kind of people who would spend ¥13,000+($130 onwards..) buying them. It’s just a picture printed on some fabric.

Saying that, the bottom picture figures look kinda cool. I see to name a few Shiro from No Game No Life(Long blue haired girl), Asseylum Vers Allusia from Aldnoah Zero(Blonde girl at the back), Hestia from DanMachi(Girl with the apple at the front, it’s a pretty good fantasy series actually, the character design aside, the series mostly focuses on Bell, a somewhat goofy but kind hearted guy who goes journeying in a dungeon and levels up a ton lol). And naturally there had to be a Saber figure there, one of the quadrillion out there produced from the Fate series!

Fate/Grand Order will probably get an anime eventually. It’s the newest instalment of the Fate franchise.
