April 28, 2015: Time Flies! We All Like Vanessa! And Gelato!

Time flies when you’re having fun.  Today marked our very last read-thru of Dark Matter’s first season.  Pictured above: the cast (with the exception of Zoie Palmer who was excused because she had a note from her mom), EP Vanessa Piazza, Director Andy Mikita, Line Producer Norman Denver, Consulting Producer Ivon Bartok, VFX Supervisor Lawren Bancroft-Wilson, and Story Editor Trevor Finn.  Well be going out with a big bang.

It’s hard to believe it’s been five and a half months since I moved to Toronto, girlfriend and dogs in tow, and now, here I am less than three weeks away from wrap – and a little over six weeks away from our season premiere.  It’s been hard, exhausting work – but, ultimately, incredibly fulfilling.  The cast and crew have been nothing short of awesome and I sincerely hope we get the chance to do it all again next year.

But that, of course, is up to you!

“I really like Vanessa,”said Consulting Producer Ivon Bartok the other day.

“Oh, me too,”I said.  And, really, what’s not to like.  She worked tirelessly to help EP and Prodigy Pictures President, Jay Firestone, get the show financed and green lit.  She is on set, in meetings, on the phone, supporting the show 24/7.  I can honestly say that I could not have done it without her.  Or, could have possibly done a lot of it – before succumbing to a complete nervous breakdown.

She is awesome at all she does, be it Exec Producing, negotiating deals, or eating one of the croissants left over from that morning’s production meeting.

Well, if it isn’t my old friend Steve Ermao who covered Stargate for various magazines (online and otherwise) back in the day and now turns his sights on Dark Matter.  Just like old times!

Director Martin Wood finishes episode #111 in fine style, with windmill kicks, concussive blasts, and gelato!

Who is this masked man?  You’ll find out when he directs episodes #112 and #113!

I forwarded SyFy the first round of assets – sketches and concept drawings of the airlocks, stasis pods, GA badge, space station, and our phantom class marauder – which should be hitting the net sometime soon.

Oh, hey, did you happen to catch the first Dark Matter trailer?  110 000+ viewers have…and counting!  Share away if you haven’t already and let’s try to hit the quarter mill mark before the season premiere, Friday June 12th and 10 p.m. as part of the new SyFyFriday lineup!

  1. Think positive – there WILL be a season two! And three. And..

Heh, I love Ivon getting ready to slap Andy M’s hand away from his food in the meeting shot. Great timing.

That mask continues to freak me out!

  2. “EP Vanessa Piazza, Line Producer Norman Denver, Consulting Producer Ivon Bartok” As my next question, can you please tell us what all these various producers do? You are also a producer, yes?

  3. Science fiction themed chocolate at Dark Matter chocolate laboratory!

I saw this at an auction benefiting Con or Bust, which helps people of color fans to attend cons we otherwise could not afford.

“I’m a small-scale, Massachusetts-licensed chocolatier who specializes in geeky chocolates. Want ginger scald truffles with spicy ginger and pear brandy inspired by the Lies of Locke Lamora? Done that. Chocolate daleks, R2D2s, giant dice? Done. I can do decorated chocolates; my Daleks are metallic and my solid two-pound Millennium Falcon is starship grey on a black cake board with white chocolate stars….”

She also makes molds for new chocolatey projects.

P.S. I don’t know this person. I’m not trying to advertise; just sharing.

  4. I can’t believe you will be done with season 1 in 3 weeks. I’m sure your season 2 will seem a lot easier. Don’t you?

I guess with that mask the wearer doesn’t talk very much.

I’m exhausted. Finally got my satellite TV back on and working. No TV since Sunday. I picked up a different cable thingy then stumbled my way thru the process. Part of the problem is, not only is Dish giving me a new receiver, but I bought a new TV too… @ Sparrow_Hawk, – My Dish guy is coming Friday. 🙂 Like you, my “new generation” receiver isn’t the right type for my new HD Led Smart TV. NEVER buy anything smarter than you! 🙂

@ MrsTigerCat – You are exactly right about the doggie exercise. But T-storms and tornadoes lately have keep my beagle and me inside. She is stir crazy.

  5. From yesterday…
@ ivonbartokfans – Chev you keep your eyes off of Ivon’s “good stuff”! Shame on you! 😉 (I am also waiting patiently for Joe to forget and not blur something important.)

  6. If you’d known about the ballistic face masks sooner, it would have made the decision between ballistic and energy weapons a far sight easier.

Given that ballistic weapons are a danger to pressurized bulkheads, I wanna’ see a scene that’s a tribute to historic soccer face saves. All you have to do to make it funny is do three of them. Extra points if the jack boot learns to direct the ricochet by the third hit.

Do the masks have some support to keep every face hit from being a nose hit? I just had an image of that old trick where you tell someone to put their hand over their face, then smash their hand into their nose.

  7. Ponytail: We call that the “Cascade Effect”. When you buy something new, then you have to update the old.
I am also waiting patiently for Joe to forget and not blur something important. 😆 I hope it’s an android picture!

It’s nice having people you can count on like, Vanessa! I believe the show will do great and I hope Vanessa will be around for the whole ride.

Is Jelly having a good day?

  8. Just shared the trailer on my Facebook page and asked friends to share. Love Martin Wood’s work, can’t wait to see #111! He did the best audio commentary on the Stargate Atlantis DVD’s, learned a lot from him.

  9. 21 days until you wrap up season one, 20 days until we get prove that you weren’t kidding about this show. lol Really looking forward to this show Joe! Not worried if there is gonna be a season 2, I can’t wait to see the cliffhanger in season 5. Are there gonna be tshirts? Particularly in x-large and black?

  10. I have no doubts you’ll get a Season 2. I’m confident Dark Matter will pull higher than a 0.1/0.2 in the 18-49 which most of the networks scripted shows have pulled lately. Personally I expect to see quite a few seasons from Dark Matter, when the competition is so poor ratings wise, I think you’ll do well.

  11. Ha…I just noticed Andy M was in the picture, wearing the telltale shirt, stealing food (my bad, didn’t see gforce‘s comment until now). I was in a hurry and didn’t bother looking closely at the picture, nor did I read all the names. I just skimmed (hey, I WAS in a hurry!). No, instead of reading the blog thoroughly, I deduced it was Andy by examining pictures of his hair and forearms, checking his directing credits and work schedule, deducing whether or not he was clean-shaven, and estimating his weight, based on 5-year old pictures. I’m pretty smart, but not too bright. 😉

    das

  12. as someone coming from the Lost Girl fandom let me kindly inform you about some stuff a lot of peeps from the LG fandom really, really, really don’t want to hear or read about: gelato trucks on set, espresso/coffee machines/baristas on set, that effin’ orange couch in the production office, EPs hanging out in boxes, picspam of VP.
sorry for being so rude. we just had wayyyyy too much of that stuff in the hiatus leading up to S5. actually that was ALL we got during that hiatus.
on another note, heartfelt thanks for giving us a glimpse of the aesthetics and feel of the show, guest stars etc. you rock!

  13. Question for the mailbag. The X-Files went off the air 13 years ago. Is there any chance MGM MIGHT green light a limited run of SG-1 or Atlantis to tie up loose ends?
