Hey, you know what I hate more than moving?

Nothing.  Nothing even comes close.  I hate the packing, the boxing up, the hiring of the movers, the move itself, the unpacking and unboxing, the farewell to your old comfy place, the hello to your new weird surroundings.  As I mentioned in a previous post, even though I’m moving cross-country for work, I don’t intend to give up my home in Vancouver.  At least not yet.  That will entirely depend on how things pan out with the new job and the city of Toronto in particular.  THEN, I’ll decide what will be in my better interest.  According to my accountant, regardless of how things go in T.O., it would be in my best financial interest to sell it and downsize.  He argues that, now that I’m separated, I no longer need a big house.  I disagree.  My dogs need running room, especially Jelly who, since her spinal surgery, has slowly but surely started to regain her ambling ways –

I’m in a cranky mood, the result of no one major annoyance but, rather, an avalanche of tiny little irritations.

Like, for instance, the “grilled cheese” croutons served with the tomato soup at Romer’s Burger Bar here in Vancouver.  When they first opened, the croutons were nice, large squares of grilled cheese.  Between then and last month, they’d been reduced to about a third their original size.

And then today, I go for lunch, and they serve me this –

I mean, seriously.  Now they can’t even be bothered to grill them?  I’m afraid that next time I go, they’ll just toss me a slice of bread and a pre-packaged Kraft single and tell me to knock myself out.  Ah, screw it.  With only a month to go before I hit Hogtown, I’ve got to be selective about my final meals.

Refuel, for instance, is one of the restaurants on my Farewell Tour – especially since owner Tom Doughty has advised me Chef Rob and Chef Ted have designed a special going away menu for me. Very much looking forward to it – and seeing them.  On my last visit to Refuel, they weren’t around.  I enjoyed two fantastic additions to their pasta menu – and then was utterly baffled to be served a dessert containing fruit and chocolate (note: You know what I hate more than moving?  Nothing.  But you know what comes in a close second?  Fruit in my dessert.).  Apparently, Chef Ted took ill and the rest of the kitchen staff was unaware of my dietary requirements.  Anyway, Tom assures me there’ll be no fruity desserts on my next visit.

Oh, and another thing that bothers me is this ridiculous ten film limit for the best picture nominations.  Why only ten?  Why leave equally worthy candidates on the outside looking in.  What about Clash of the Titans, Sex and the City 2, Furry Vengeance, and The Back-Up Plan?  Where’s their reward for getting made?

Also the SGU cancellation.  Which brings me to this – another behind the scenes vid.  This one, console playback of (a section of) the cool new section of the ship the crew discovers in the back half of season 2:

Mailbag:

woody woodward writes: “I am trying so hard to locate a SGU Ball cap for my bald head. Is there some place I can order, buy, steal …well, not steal one?”

Answer: There’s one sitting in my office.  You can have it if you’re in the Vancouver area.

IggyMing writes: “BTW, I love how Space/CTV was such a great supporter of SGU and the Stargate franchise in general. They really pulled out all the stops to market it, and it paid off big time.”

Answer: Exactly that.  A perfect example of a terrific promotional campaign paying off in the form of great ratings.  Also, the trailers Space cut for the show were nothing short of fantastic.

for the love of Beckett writes: “Aw, Joe. This is just sad, this pathos of departure. And you’ve taught us that until you and Paul sign your contracts, it’s too soon to celebrate. Where does that leave us?”

Answer: In a comfy little limbo.  But don’t get too comfy.

hal ehlrich writes: “He must be pretty upset with them,, along with all of the other Stargate people.”

Answer: You have to understand that this is a business.  Nothing personal.  At the end of the day, unfortunately, Universe wasn’t getting the strong ratings that SyFy’s other Fall scripted shows were pulling in.

Bryan M. White writes: “Is Rob planning on doing any directing for the new project? -or is it too early to tell?”

Answer: Too early to tell, but I certainly hope so.

E writes: “Once SGU’s fate is determined, will you share with us an AU season 3, like you did with SGA S6?”

Answer: Unlike SGA, we didn’t have stories in place – more general ideas of where we wanted our characters, and the show, to go.

DP writes: ““It can now be found at the end of Act III.” Is that a cryptic hint about what the “suspicious character” talk is all about? Just being silly?”

Answer: Sorry, not a clue to anything beyond my skewed sense of humor.

DALLAS MARSHALL writes: “Sir, Is there any truth to this rumor? “There was a report over here in the UK last week saying that Robert Carlyle asked to be let out of his contract and that the new head of scyfy was not a fan of the series.””

Answer: Absolutely no truth to the rumor that Bobby wanted to leave.  He had a great time making the show, loved Vancouver and the people he worked with – and we were very, very lucky to have him.  He was a class act who put his heart and soul into the character of Nicholas Rush and I know he was just as disappointed as we were to have it come to a premature end.

walkersguidetomiltonkeynes writes: “How are you supposed to submit mailbag questions? Every time I try it this way nothing happens…”

Answer: Maybe you’re doing it wrong.

Mike McGinnis writes: “So, are you a rob or russel fan this season?”

Answer: I’m in the Boston Rob camp.

Michael writes: “Have you decided on an area in Toronto that you find suitable to look for real estate?”

Answer: Not yet.  Still looking.  Have a month to decide.

glennh73 writes: “Question, want to start reading books. Havent read book for about 10yrs. But want to start up but need a good book to start. I love scifi like Stargate an Charlie Jade. Any suggestions?”

Answer: Old Man’s War, by John Scalzi (who was, incidentally, a Creative Consultant on Stargate: Universe).

Gina writes: “As you are now currently between two different shows, are you finding it hard to shift back and forth between them or has Stargate been a part of your life for so long its just second nature?”

Answer: Not much shifting going on as the work left to do on SGU is minimal: commenting on the remaining mixes.  It certainly will be a different to go from a well-oiled machine that has been in production for some 15 years to a fledgling production.

  1. this is probably a question for a different person but..

i noticed the music played for the “recap” at the beginning of each episode in season 2 is different from season 1. To me, the season 2 music is just a tad lighter in tone. Was this a conscious choice? Which one did you like more?

  2. Joe – I like it when you’re cranky. It makes me smile. NOT because I’m gloating or delighting in your misery or anything like that (I SWEAR!), but because you remind me so much of…ya know…Todd. 😀

  3. Been lurking here for a while and this is my first comment as I’m very curious about this:

E writes: “Once SGU’s fate is determined, will you share with us an AU season 3, like you did with SGA S6?”

What did you do with s6? What did I miss?

Ps: Etobicoke is a great area to live in Toronto. I moved here last summer. Oh and just wanted to say I enjoy reading your blog 🙂

  4. Hi joe:
That video of Jelly is so cute!
I love Pugs and yours looks so adorable!
Is she a bit overweight ?
She seems to be struggling a bit to walk around.
Thanks for all of the small behind the scenes shots of season 2.5.
Also, I finally started seeing some commercials on SYFY for the last 10 episodes.
They say “All destinies come to an end” They are trying to make as if the show is actually going to have an ending to it !
This must be a way for them to try to get descent ratings for the show.
I know I will be watching them since who knows how long it will be before we see any new Stargate again !
I have to say that the back half looks like you guys saved the best for last. From what I can tell every episode looks action packed and no “filler episodes” . Hopefully I am right and at least we will get some of the best SGU episodes that were made.
Do you agree that season 2.5 will be the best as far as the action and storytelling ?
Gee only 2 weeks to go .. I can’t wait!
    Thanks

  5. I love that you’re keeping your Vancouver home. The word is options. I also love that you’re in a really great place in life right now. You have so much going on, but it’s all good stuff. And seeing Jelly girl roaming around is fantastic! Oh, and don’t forget Swiss Chalet on your Farewell Tour.

  6. @Ryan

You can find the AU Season 6 — ideas the writers were working on for the season that never came —

  7. Just wanted to give a quick brava! to Jelly.. She’s getting around very well..

and I’m very glad to see it!

I am hoping to get involved in the online reader’s group here soon too.

I also wanted to thank you for taking the time to do this blog with your busy schedule. It’s meant a lot to fans like me to have someone take the time to give us a peek in. It’s just too bad that there are those who have been cruel in their comments. It ruins it for the rest of us who appreciate your time.

And no, I’m not sucking up to also get a SGU baseball cap =)

    Gina

  8. Thanks for answering my question. I guess in the end it’s good not to know exactly how awesome season 3 would’ve been. 🙁 It’s breaking my little fangirl heart as it is.

Watched rest of 2.0 episodes last night. Now I read your entry and get as cranky as you. Actually I’m feeling a little bit something else, but it’s hard to translate into English. 😛

Damn, life. SGU is so mighty fine show. I have enjoyed *every* episode, there are so many things I love about this show… It’s been one helluva ride and I’m very sad to see it end so soon. Still hoping with all my heart SGU’s story gets a satisfactory ending. Another three seasons would be ideal… but I’d settle with almost anything right now.

  9. Yeah, keep the VYR house. The value will only go up. Sublet if you have to. Hey, rent it out to a “Studio”… ;-]

  10. It’s just sad Joe. But I don’t know which is worse, that there will be nothing to watch on TV between SGU’s end and the start of your new show ( 🙂 ) or grilled cheese and tomato soup without the grill.

I like fruity desserts but I don’t like fruit in desserts where the primadonna is something else. Cherries and chocolate together are a duelworthy insult, as is cherry jam on cheesecake. The latter just shows that whoever made it just doesn’t care about cooking much or actually likes what he/she’s made, which is worse. Other culinary insults are tiramisu made with cake doh instead of lingue di gatto or lady-fingers, fajitas with gravy, (oh yeah, that was made, but not eaten) and last but not least (actually the most) an overpowering taste of cumin in burger patties. Capital punishment for that one please.

QUESTION: Are there going to be any SGU fiction books and if so, how canon are books considered to be in Stargateland? (I’m only asking because I know they aren’t canon at all in Star Trek.)

  11. DALLAS MARSHALL writes: “Sir, Is there any truth to this rumor? “that the new head of syfy was not a fan of the series.””

“Answer: Absolutely no truth to the rumor that Bobby wanted to leave. I hear lots of crickets. 😮 So it does seem that the new head of SyFy doesn’t like Stargate much? If so, that’s no surprise, as ghosts and wrestling are SyFy channel’s money makers. I guess their changing the name from SciFi Channel was their subtle way of letting us know they care more about money and non-sy-fy related shows, than real sci-fi. Oh well.

  12. i’m going to New York on Tuesday. Got reservations at Jean Georges, Daniel, Eleven Madison Park, WD-50….Per Se i’m going to walk in for the salon menu.

  13. Aw…Joe, I feel your pain!

I hate having to clear out/pack boxes and moving is just the pits!

Would love to tell you that you’ll feel better about the whole thing soon, but if you’re anythng like me, change is something that takes a while to get used you – but you will.

Soon you’ll find a great place to live, some new great restaurants – and who knows, maybe even a hot new woman!
And if the worst happens and you really hate it – which I doubt – you still have the dogs, and your bloggers!

Speaking of which I have to go as my dog is trying to walk across the laptop…

    Take care Joe!

  14. Well I just got a horrible shock today, a assumed stray cat I’ve been looking after but couldn’t have in the house due to me being unsure if it’l take well to existing pets turned up with a assumed broken leg.

Am unsure if it has an owner, looks in very good condition so am hoping for the best for it but aren’t holding out hopes.

Thing is. I pretty much feed it and provide a warmish place for it to go if it needs it but am worried for it’s safety now more than anything.

Poor thing left before I could do anything to help it. Now my Sunday will be operation wait for a cat to come back to help it lol

Best case scenario I can provide a room for it to recover in. Worse case scenario the thing ends up dying somewhere.

    Depressing. I love cats too.

  15. @Robert Carlyle rumors

Wouldn’t believe them personally, just search out his interviews if anyone is unsure. The guy has said enough times he was tired of doing films only a handful of people would watch, and wanted to do something different. He has spoken no end of times about his love for the show and playing Rush on said show.

  16. Thanks for the video this morning,Jelly is looking so good. I am off to Daytona to watch the race, should be a good time! Have a great day! best wishes with the packing, don’t want to ever move again. where do all the boxes come from, they seem to multiply on their own.like rabbits.

  17. Hi Joe,

My boyfriend and I have been actively reading your blog. Keep your options open, not saying TO and the GTA is a bad area, but I’ve lived here my whole life and want to move out East or West.. Possibly near the ocean or a lake in the countryside.

Its been so sad to see Stargate fall like this. Everyone is saying how it can be renewed by another network. I do hope this happens, and Space keeps saying they cannot carry the show alone. (Sad, because Space on Fridays night was the thing to watch around here, followed by of course, InnerSpace w/ Ajay & Fry.)

My boyfriend Paul always reminds me how the SGA movie was supposed to come out on his birthday (June like 2-3 yrs ago at least lol); and I was going to buy it without realising it had been put on hiatus….

What about the MMO Game? Is the whole idea scrapped or just permantley on Hiatus? Paul wants to go pre-order it(If I told him there was a release date avaliable he would wake up and run to Square One and be like : Stargate Pre-Order Please :D) .

Let us know what else we can do on the Canadian side of things if there is anything.

Hope your move goes well. Your Dogs are absolutley cute!

Wishing you all the best with the new endeavors as well.

    Always with Care,
    Anna

  18. So, are you flying out to Toronto again before the final move, to confirm your new digs, or are you relying on an agent or other proxy to provide you livable quarters? Is a stint in a hotel, or perhaps moving in with an unsuspecting friend? Not having undergone a move myself for well over a decade, I admit to enjoying your ongoing ventures with a sense of “better him than me”. Thanks for sharing, and hoping your new digs will work out well for all parties.

  19. Great video of Jelly – she looks happy to be moving so easily…

I wish you good luck with whatever happens…yeah I am majorily sad there will no longer be any Stargate on, but the way SyFy is going there won’t be any scifi on the channel soon..

The only thing I watch on the channel now is the occasional day marathons, depending on the show and Face-Off…I am enjoying that contest and the “behind the scenes” aspect of movie makeup and special effects..I used to watch Ghost Hunters, but got bored, same ole, same ole…

Did anyone catch the quip on Big Bang with Leonard trying to figure out how to pronounce Syfy? Pretty funny!

  20. You “disagree” with your accountant? That’d be like if your accountant disagreed with some of your writing. I don’t understand why people go to professionals and then disregard some of their suggestions.

Maybe you want to be like an American and live past your means.

That being said, I agree with you about the food.

  21. Hang in there Joe. It will all work out in the end.

    (It’s just getting there that’s a bitch)

  22. I’m cranky too Joseph..but it has more to do with the endless amounts of snow that Mother Nature is dumping on my driveway lately.

The banks are so high that I have to lift the damn shovel instead of just pushing it along. Come to think of it, with your move coming up, that is one more thing you can look forward to, seeing snow again….misery loves company after all 🙂

And don’t let your accountant dull the baller lifestyle that you have with….numbers.

    Cheers

  23. I’d be cranky too if I was facing all of that. Wait a minute. I will be if hubby finds the job he wants. 😉 He wants to relocate which, of course, would require a move. This has been a weekend and a half. Just found out from my parents last night that my cousins have requested hospice for my aunt. My mother told me that the doctors were not giving her long to live.

Anyway, hope everyone has a good Sunday!!

  24. Hello Joseph,

thanks for your answer, and good luck for the future !

i see : You give your SGU cap ?

I’m interested! can you send it? I pay the postage!

For your biggest French fan ? please! please! please!

  25. I always said if they could just beam my belongings from one place to another, moving would be okay. I feel your pain.

    @Zach P

Wow. First, maybe he isn’t some idiot with no opinions of his own. Lives have been saved by people disagreeing with their doctors’ opinions. Being a professional isn’t equal to being G-d. And for an ACCOUNTANT, as you said, he gave SUGGESTIONS. Period. Joe gets to decide what is important to him and if the house and less funds are it, good for him.

Nor was your jab at Americans called for. Get over yourself already. And read up, bucko… Canada isn’t doing so superbly either:

  26. What about selling out Mr M? I have Atlantis here, in the Bahamas, as well as Flowers Games; where everybody wins. Now Flowers is a gambling house, wink wink nod nod, but an aspect of Flowers online, is one can place bets via the internet. And we all know, gambling is illegal in many states, but then, so is porn, and that hasn’t stopped anyone. And Flowers numbers comes from United States various lotteries, the day and night lotto. From Cali to Florida. We all know what Atlantis Resorts and Casinos is about, therefore, I’m thinking you lot can appeal to Pepsi, or perhaps your former cohorts can, so they can appeal for product placements to save our show (not commercials, but have Rush drinking the last Pepsi on Destiny, Volker being taught by Destiny’s AI, while he’s traversing Atlantis Hotel, a Bahamian guy on Destiny saying how on a trip to earth via the stones, he suggested to his sister, to use a number he saw on Destiny’s data pads, and she won a butt load of money from Flowers online, etc, etc). MGM should love this idea, because, they did just so for about every Bond film in the last, God knows how long. And Quantum of Solace, in my opinion the best one, was sold up the wazoo. It’s doubtful Atlantis or Flowers will pay me any heed, being piss poor, uglier than sin permits (even for a Bahamian; with partial DNA of Carib Indians and Irish; must be the Irish fraction of me), and blacker than the unseen forces of black matter that supposedly permeates the space time of the real. Not to mention, I don’t have much clothing of value, being a tall fat bastard who hasn’t a job (on account of having a bad back, and the Bahamas being in a recession). But Mr M, you’re white, Awesome, and a Producer of a multi Billion dollar show—the bloody Prime Minister may want to have you over for dinner if you appealed for product placement here (I’m very serious, they’re mystified by Producers, and product Placements, and white people).

  27. You know, I love your SG-1, SGA, SGU episodes. Many of them are in my list of “all time favorite episodes”.
Couldn’t you just freelance for SGU, if and when the show goes on in some form?
Because I will REALLY miss your episodes.
Or is that something you crossed out?

PS. If you want to read the list, just say it. 😉

  28. Oh crap! Sorry about that post Joe. That was my crazy Beagle putting her big paws where they don’t belong. I think she was “leaning” over the keyboard trying to get an empty chocolate wrapper.

Or maybe she just wanted to say Hi! and as long as you have your dogs, don’t worry everything is fine and don’t forget their bones in the move.

  29. I am more stressed than cranky when moving. Dad was in the Navy, I was in the Navy, hubby was in the Navy. I have moved a lot, although with the luxury of the military picking up the tab. It does suck. I was always the new kid at school. At least your puppers won’t have the social pressure of fitting in and having the others dogs tease them about their hair and clothes.

Just got a look at the job the demolition/clean up guys did on dad’s basement. They managed to break the wiring to the furnace, throw out hubby’s supplies to do basic repairs, hauled away the headboard I was storing in the carport, leave all the live wires exposed, tripping a breaker, and oh yes, the furnace? Left the gas on with the pilot light out. I couldn’t be so lucky as to have the place blow up, no, I couldn’t could I? And hubby’s handtruck we were using to move large items stolen from the shed. And then hubby found a huge hidden stash of pop bottles full of pee hidden in the backyard. Uh, really? Yuck. Oh yeah, the insurance is due. And dad’s taxes.
I keep reminding myself this is temporary, temporary, temporary.

    And it is snowing. Bleh.

On the bright side, hubby’s new used Harley is lovely. Needs a little TLC, but that’s fine.

  30. Do the folically challenged get dibs on the SGU cap? If so put my name down please. 😛 🙂

  31. Space has been the BEST network for SGU. At least a couple times a day. I have been seeing AWESOME previews for the second half of season two. So excited since that same week sees the premiere of Riese Kingdom Falling as well which includes many Stargate cast including Patrick Gilmore and Peter Kelamis.

Before you head out of town, don’t forget to hit “Five Guys Burgers”.

  32. @Debra

Probably shouldn’t say this as you’l likely become hostile again to me too, but you seriously need to stop attacking peoples posts, you come accross as really offensive/angry and it wouldn’t surprise me if you moved on to someone else who comments here too.

    @In general

Anyway haven’t seen the poor injured cat from earlier, been a while now. However as it was able to climb onto a 5 foot odd fence at the end of the garden I’m wondering if its just hurt its foot and not actually broke anything. Still it seriously needs help so am hoping still it has an owner, as I couldn’t stop it leaving my garden. Just hoping it comes back so I can get it treated.

  33. @Joan001
    (From yesterdays post)

I agree with you that the Nielson system is flawed but until an alternative that works for everyone can be introduced it’s unlikely to change. I also agree with you that high viewing figures does not always mean a quality show, with shows like Jersey Shore and other teen shows pulling in astronomical figures because they simply find it cool regardless of the quality. It speaks volumes.

I’m not sure what you mean about the fate of SGU but simply put I personally think perhaps MGM should of done things differently with the show so that if Syfy pulled out the show still could of been continued, had they done this it’d still be on the air, arbeit on a new network, somewhere.

It’s a shame that so many countries have SGU on the air and in some ways they’re doing reasonably well.

@I truly hope that Brad Wright and MGM are able to come to some positive conclusion with the rest of SGU’s story.

I maintain that Syfy will likely be the only channel that will air SGU in whatever form it may come. With some work from MGM to make it happen.

I generally would love to see Season 3. Mostly because I’m wondering what kinda creative take it would have with Paul and Joe having reduced roles, meaning if they brought back Linda and Remi and made them do more episodes, how would their writing still mix things up?

@SGU has only 2 years of a 5-year plan’s worth of stories and the whole thing comes to a crashing end.

That again is a shame too. So much potential. I think you’d agree it’s a crying shame.

@Maybe we should have been lobbying the advertisers of SGU instead of the network.

No. I think people should be lobbying MGM personally, or if told too by the powers that be, whatever network is interested in picking SGU up.
(I still think Syfy is the only network that will air a continuation to SGU in whatever form) They love the show, it just didn’t pull the figures they expected. But most importantly, they love the show.

  34. Ew, I like Boston Rob as much as you like Big Ben. Looking forward to the second chancers on Amazing Race, especially the adorable cowboys.

Watched Jelly’s training films several times and those are definately four little paws moving in synchopation, yay for Jelly!! I remember that painful gait from last year, it’s like she’s a whole new lady; almost bionic in her tree sniffing powers!

I started the week walking more at lunch and walking home from work, managing only 5 minutes of my work out tape before collapsing, but by the end of the week I managed 20 minutes of cardio and a mile walk yesterday, plus some barbell work to Popye my arms. Feeling so much better, I’m gonna keep on working out to boost my energy.

Glad you’re keeping the house; you have work on both coasts, and what if they move with a SG movie and you’re needed on both coasts? Plus if you did come back to work in Van would you have to search for a house with a nice yard in a neighborhood that you loved? Since Van is the heart of the film biz that you’re in it seems wise to keep it.

  35. I know how you feel Joe. I absolutely loathe packing and moving. I cannot really think of any one thing that just wracks on my nerves more than the thought and definitely the action of moving. Like you said, just every little thing that it enlists: packing up boxes, hiring movers (or moving all the stuff yourself), unpacking, leaving your old home, trying to get used to the new one. Just ugh!

And your home situation, you know, it may be the more conscious and “wiser” decision with the way times are today to downsize, but I definitely do understand the wanting more room for your furry loved ones too. And Jelly is such a little trooper. I’m glad to see that she seems happy and is moving around a lot better and everything!

And thanks for the video, I can’t wait to see what that new section is. Watching the video, my mind had an idea as to what, but I’m sure I’m completely wrong.

Foodie question: Ever try any Cajun/Louisiana cuisine? If so, what particular dish(es) did you enjoy?

  36. To Joseph: You have supposedly said the best way to support SGU is buying the DVD’s and/or iTunes episodes. This is my suggestion then. Open SGU sales on itunes to the rest of the world so I can support the show I find may be the best scifi show since BSG. I truly fail to see the point in having the hassle of network channel cancellations when we have modern technologies that present new ways to distribute shows. The digital age is here but only if we let go of the old hierarchy which only serves the networks, not the fans or the cast or the producers. The film and tv industry must one of huge frustration on the flip side.

    Sincerely Michael

  37. Hey Joe,

I have someone on the Syfy.com forums, posting plot info from episode 211. They stated something about a flashback with the Asgard and them developing something and whatnot. I need to know if this is far-fetched because I have to remove those posts or at least label them speculation. Not sure if you want to reply to my e-mail if this is too private, but this is important because I cannot have people posting un-approved spoilers on Syfy.com

    Thanks!

    Squall78

  38. Just wanted to give my condolences for your separation. I don’t think you’ve really mentioned it before, unless I missed it, glad you’re having a chance to move to a new place in a new city though =) (I know you spoke briefly about Ash fixing you up with her friends last April, but since then you’ve been quiet about it)

  39. I’ve been a little selective in my TV watching lately. I keep trying to watch The Office, but my TV doesn’t work well. If I try to watch on Hulu, I end up distracted by all the other sparklies on the internet.

I have to get dragged into something before TV watching seems more important to me than taking over more villages in Tribal Wars. I’m sure it’s just a phase.

So, in my limited watching, I’d occasionally see a reality show with something called a “confessional”. When the contestants on Hell’s Kitchen talk to the camera, it’s clear what’s going on. They are talking to us. Thumbs up so far.

When SGU characters would record stuff for whoever on the kino, at least they had the sense to ask Eli why. Eli chimed in with why. I’m with you, Eli. Makes sense. Justifies the scene at least.

My sister insisted I watch this show called Modern Family last night. I suddenly became very uncomfortable. “Who are they talking to?” I asked.

Did you notice what TV has slipped in on us? The characters occasionally sit in front of the camera and talk. To us. “Hey, look up from your iPhone a sec, here’s what we’re doing on this show you’re sorta’ watching.”

What am I measuredly ranting about? The characters on sitcoms talk to us now. Who let this happen?

I’ll go back to my other pursuits now. I won’t stand in the way of progress. Put enough explosions in the show and I might even go along with these shenanigans, I mean, new developments.

SPACE channel in Canada is getting a free ride from Skiffy (AKA SyFy) since they didn’t spend any money on producing SGU. IIRC the show was funded almost solely by Skiffy with financing in place for 2 seasons. Also SPACE only pays MGM not Skiffy for a licensing fee.

As I mention in a previous post SPACE channel Canada is a re-broadcaster with no original scripted shows of it’s own. Their annual operating budget might be about the same as one single episode of any hour long scripted show. In it’s current incarnation, it will face a steady defection of viewers to online streaming or online download that offer HD format. I think because SPACE broadcast only in SD is the reason why SGU is only offer in SD on the iTunes Canada store.

The SPACE channel and others was primary created to lock out the SciFi and other American specialty channels from Canada. Things would be a lot different if there was a combine American-Canadian audience for Skiffy.

The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis broke the fourth wall in 1959. Dobie talked directly to the audience.

  42. Just wondering, if I just won the lottery for a 100 million €, could I make you guys produce like 10 more episodes for a season 3 SGU? :p

  43. Hello Joe.

Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions. As someone who has moved twice in the last five years, I wish you luck. I hope everything goes well for you, and that the movie is not traumatic for the pups. Keep us in the loop.

    Best Wishes,

    Bryan

  44. Feeling cranky here as well, Joe. We’re down to last two days prepping estate house for inventory by liquidators. That means moving stuff into the “not for sale” room and second-guessing the keep /sell choices we’ve made since Sept. 09. *sigh*

  45. @ Anne Teldy – I think Bob Hope started it all back in his Road films, if not in something else. He was always talking directly to the audience, bringing them into the joke. It’s one of my favorite things about his early films.

  46. “Aw, Joe. This is just sad, [snip] and it’s too soon to celebrate. Where does that leave us?”

Answer: In a comfy little limbo. But don’t get too comfy.

Well okay, then, if you promise. 🙂

Does that mean there will finalizing news on the Toronto front? And concrete news on the reconnecting with Carl & Brad?

Miss Jelly Bean is moving much better! You can tell she is still using her upper body to pull herself forward. Did the vets and/or Christine recommend any physical therapy exercises or massage to warm up and build up her back and leg muscles? It is so good to see her enjoying herself outdoors. 😀

Thanks for sharing das, even though for some reason, that picture is as creepy as hell. Regardless, It’s beautiful. Thanks to Stargate, you spent your last on a ethereal picture that invokes non-ethereal sensations—can Glee or Jersey shore do this? Thanks to Stargate, I’ve renewed my love for theoretical and experimental physics; Entanglements, and peer focus phase transitions—triumphant; an observed particle loses it’s entanglements and the passage of particles through a two slit, won’t produce the usual third slit on the receiver, but would lose the third slit projection on a two slit experiment during any observation (we change it’s state by observing it 🙂 ). When SGU is gone, which show, will encourage us, or the ones behind us, to think like gods, even though we’re flesh?

  48. Das,, I want that photo, or one similar, in color! One of my favorite de-stressors is to float on my back in the water. With a warm sun beating down, and gentle waves rocking me, it’s easy to literally kick back, tuck my hands behind my neck, cross one ankle over the other, and drift away. Just like laying in a hammock. I could use some of that right now, in fact. To borrow a phrase from Narelle, “Woo-sah!”

  49. Hi Joe,

Have you seen “Threat Level: Midnight”?

    Whatcha think?

It’s a *totally* AWESOME half-hour movie, definitely worth watching. Maybe it’ll give ya some cool ideas for jam-packed action sequences in your new tv show. 😀 heheh

  50. (((((Joe))))) I think you need a hug. 🙂 Awwww…Jelly!! She is looking really good! She’s in such good spirits! 🙂

  51. SGU was and is awesome! Wasn’t a big fan at first but it’s gone on to become my favourite sci-fi show ever. So sad to see it go 🙁
