I picked up the message this weekend, a reminder from my dentist that I had an appointment, today, at noon. At noon? That was perilously close to lunch and didn’t sound like an appointment I would have made. Still, it was too late to cancel so I went into the office, then cut out at a little after 11:00 a.m. and made the drive down to Yaletown. I arrived in record time and so, with twenty minutes to kill, I figured what better way to treat myself following a trip to the dentist than by purchasing a mess o’ handcrafted chocolates from Chocoatl. I dropped in on my buddy Themis (who gave me a sneak peek of his new chocolate line that will be premiering in about a month), picked up some tasty tidbits for the gang back at work, then headed off to my appointment. It was a follow-up cleaning and check-up. Because I apparently clench my jaw a lot, I was fitted with a night guard during my last visit. “Are you using the nightguard every night?”asked the dental hygenist. “Not every night,”I answered truthfully. In fact, the nightguard was still sitting in the trunk of my car where I tossed it after that last visit, oh, three months ago.
On the dog front, Lulu is settling in quite nicely. She rough-houses with Bubba, snuggles up at night beside her boyfriend Maximus, and is treated with general indifference by Jelly.

I’ve been reading this blog every day, and I *think* I’m up to speed, but please forgive what could still be a stupid question even so: is “Outcast” the Sheppard backstory episode proposed by Joe Flanigan and written by Alan McCullough? If not,
what is the title of that episode?
Also, have you read Robert Silverberg’s novella “Sailing to Byzantium”? It struck me that the main character in it would make an excellent role for Mr Flanigan, if it ever gets adapted for the screen (preferably big rather than small) – though there are other reasons for reading it besides that.

To be honest, the only phrase that comes to mind is in season 2 when Rodney is talking about how he is keeping a tally of all the radiation he’s been exposed too, and comments, “At this rate, I don’t even know if I should procreate!” and Major Lorne answers, “You know, I was just thinking the same thing.”

First time commenting, been reading for a couple of months. Love the blog, laugh out loud funny! I had a dentist appointment today, too.
Anyway – love the shows. I watch a lot of sci-fi/fantasy, but not a big reader of it, although I read alot. Read more of it as a kid and kind of got out of it. Which books/authors would you recommend to start with? I have “Ender’s Game” and picked up “Lies of Locke Lamora” today. Looked at George RR Martin, but there were so many to choose from. I actually read alot of kid lit, especially scifi/fantasy, as I am a third grade teacher. Loved “City of Ember,” enjoyed “Eragon” am reading “Dragon Rider” and “Hatching Magic” now and I love the “Wrinkle in Time” series. Course have read all of HP. Thanks, Gracey

With Atlantis having a military leader (Carter) instead of a civilian one (Weir), what does this mean for how the expedition will conduct itself, especially when relating to alien peoples/species?
I grind my teeth terribly at night, sometimes it gets bad enough (usually during grad school finals week) that I wake up with headaches. But I have a terrible gag reflex too. So until they come up with a nightguard that doesn’t set off my gag reflex, I’m with you and tossing the nightguard into the trunk of Neon.

Love the idea of one of the guys becoming a father. I feel like it would add so much to a character, and just kind of round out things… It would also be interesting, since so many of the actors have kids and/or are having kids in the near future in real life! 🙂 (also, as an aside: I love that Teyla’s having a baby! 🙂 I think it’s great how you guys are so flexible to include the actress’s pregnancies in the story lines. it’s so awesome.)
I was wondering, have you guys ever thought of doing an episode from the perspective of someone who’s not on(and/or not from) Atlantis? Or at least, most of the episode. Kind of like “The Other Guys”, except about a person on another planet (or something)? I think it would be interesting to see the SGA team from an outsider’s perspective… could be fun. 🙂

if I may add my two-cents to Olivia the puppy novice, a puppy crate is invaluable! we have two,well we have two dogs so d’uh. They use them as their own bedrooms, they feel safe and secure and an added bonus is when the chewing phase kicks in and you have to leave them, put them in the crate, it isn’t cruel and avoids all manner of destructive behaviours.
Lulu is getting more adorable each time I see her, I hope you take care though, if a strong wind happens to catch those ears right she’ll be long gone.

Lulu is adorable! I have a 5 lb toy poodle mix that adopted us and a miniature schnauzer (not *that* little!) and they are a lot of fun.
On a final note, way back when I’d asked if you could post pictures and you have, so thank you so much! Seeing shots from the set has been wonderful and it’s really the major source of season 4 images and information. Thanks to your blog, I am super excited about Atlantis this year. Sally, since you’re a fan of Sam and AT, I understand your concerns and your questions.
However, for some fans who never watched SG-1, and/or fans who love Atlantis as it was, the addition of Sam will only work if those Atlantis characters who were already there before season 4 are still the ones that know things better than Sam. Sam knows more about things in the Milky Way, but John, Rodney and the others know more about things in the Pegasus Galaxy, so Rodney IS the expert in science in Atlantis, not Sam, and as such, Sam needs to defer to him. The same with John and military decisions in Atlantis.
As I said, I understand your feelings. But think about it: how would you feel the other way around? If Rodney had gone to the SGC as base commander, wouldn’t you prefer him deferring to Sam, since she’s the one that has more experience in the Milky Way? Likewise, if John had gone to the SGC as base commander, wouldn’t you prefer him deferring to Sam, since she’s the one that has more experience in the Milky Way?
The addition of Sam will only work, in my opinion, if Sam is changed to fit the show and the old characters are still the heroes and the ones that know more than Sam, and not the other way around. I’ve never watched SG-1, but I’ve heard enough complains about how the old characters were wallpapered in favor of the characters played by Ben Browder and Claudia Black, and how the show was changed to fit the new characters and not the other way around. I’m positive about season 4, because all I’ve heard makes me think they’re not making the same mistake twice. Time will tell, of course.

2)The episodes 13 to 17 are stand alone, or there is a continuity?

Will this still count as watching the show ratings wise? Or do I have to watch the whole thing commercials included for it to be counted?

I hate comments like this. Sheppard was stuck on a world for six months with no prospect of ever leaving and as time went by and feeling I’d guess pretty lonely– allowed himself a night of being someone who obviously wanted the same in return.
The woman from the “Tower’ threw her self at him and yes he kissed her, but I highly doubt he slept with her after finding out she wanted him to have a kid. If the guy is the military commander of Atlantis, I doubt he feels its appropriate to have relations with anyone under his command.
So the Kirking and manho stuff just irks me. If there’s a spark between him an Larrin I say go for it. The guy deserves something after all these years.

Since Sam Carter is now on Stargate Atlantis, I plan to start watching it regularly. The only thing is, I don’t know what station its on as a current-run series (i.e., new episodes, not re-runs) in Canada. I believe that the Space channel only shows re-runs. I know that the various CityTV and A-Channels across Canada also show re-runs, but I’m not sure if any of them show new episodes (I believe that they are independent stations in each city, not one consolidated network at the moment, so it would mean emailing each and every CityTV and A-Channel station in each major city to find out if they plan to air season 4 this fall — a rather onerous task). I was hoping you could would know? It doesn’t matter to me if the first-runs air only on Vancouver’s CityTV or Ottawa’s A-Channel, for example, as I have satellite and get all the stations. I just need to know which ones. Thanks so much.

That ole fade to black thing means “they done it” in movie/TV land, sorry to say. My problem was that Shep is a 40 year old Air Force colonel and he couldn’t say NO to a girl who looked like she was 16. It was DISGUSTING!!!!

Shep being targeted by a Vala-immitation who insults his manhood? Yeah, that’s Daniel and Vala all over again.
Carter. Just Carter being there at all when she’s NOT an SGA character and she’s been around long enough for those of us to don’t like her to have made a decision (come on, Joe. Ten years)
A lot of us are ‘refugees’ for want of a better word from SG1 post season 6 or 7. We bailed when things got too ridiculous, too soapie (I still blame Amanda for the Pete storyline.. afterall, she’s the one who said she wanted her character to have a boyfriend!)
If you go the same way with SGA, you’ll be lucky to have the show still airing by the end of season four.
We’ve all been there, done that, and while we may have put up with it to a certain extent the first time around with SG1, there are many who’ll just cut and run if you do the same thing on SGA. There are too many good shows out there to waste time on Scifi that’s become a soap.

That ole fade to black thing means “they done it” in movie/TV land, sorry to say. My problem was that Shep is a 40 year old Air Force colonel and he couldn’t say NO to a girl who looked like she was 16. It was DISGUSTING!!!!

If my memory serves me correctly, Joe, didn’t you say on your old GW ‘Ask Joe’ thread that, in fact, Sheppard gave Mara her marching orders in The Tower after she tried to seduce him, but that it was edited out of the episode we saw on screen?
My memory usually serves me correctly, and as you co-wrote this episode, perhaps you could confirm that Sheppard didn’t, er, put a big smile on Mara’s face after the scene faded to black?
Geez, a 40 year old man, and who says Sheppard is 40, having sex with a younger woman? Perish the thought. Everyone knows sex is only for those under 40…yeah, tell my husband that!

Joe, I have 1 more question…
In his recent interview with Gateworld, Martin Gero said that 1 in every 3 episodes this season was a ‘giant’ episode, that I took to mean in the epic, big special effects sense. I was wondering, kind of more for confirmation, will this season have a more ‘epic’ feel overall, a kind of Rising or First Strike feel if you will, i.e. the kind of thing you expect from a season opener or season finale, but instead carried through out the whole season?

Given your post, I have a sense that if we stuck a lump of coal up your ass, two weeks later we’d have a diamond! Either that, or you’re jealous that Shep has a sex life. If you’re feeling stressed about it hon, i’m sure I could reccomend a good 12 step programme for you. :o)

Grew up? Oh my goodness me. Yes, you’re right. One night of passion in 3 years is definately cause for concern… Joe, I think it’s time to get the old chastity belt out for Shep! 😉 Gate Lady, do you honestly think that the writers are going to write 20, 45 minute episodes of Shep or anyone else on the team for that matter, doing the wild thing? Do you really think that they care more about romance and mushy stuff, along with who is having sex with whom, when the pegasus galaxy and our team are in mortal danger? Really? If you do, then sorry to be blunt… But I will, I think it might be time to get some perspective.

In a 3-person household with two computers, you’d think I’d be able to get online once in a while. Instead, last night I watched about 4 hours of SG-1 season 10 commentaries waiting for a chance to check my email. I doubt my email would have been as entertaining, so it turned out fine. I did mean I had to wait until this morning to the latest pics of Lulu, though. So cute!

and i understand your feelings totally, but (and you knew there was going to be a but :p)…
no matter what character was brought over to be leader of atlantis (whether new or an established character), this person would be IN CHARGE. what’s the use of having a leader if this character is basically gagged from making any contributions?
there’s a balance to things. that’s all i’m asking for. whether mckay or sheppard or the guy that cleans the computer screens knows more because of their (longer) time being there, there still is someone else in charge. so i’m just hoping that with all that deferring, sam actually IS in charge.
(sam carter was brought over to atlantis, so this *is continuing* her character’s storyline)

Sorry but I blame the people who conceived the character pete, the people who wrote it, the people who produced and directed it and the showrunner. Absolute drivel that has had a major damaging impact on the Carter character.
AT asking for a boyfriend for Carter did not have to result in the immature idiot that was served up by the creative minds in charge who ultimately decided the boyfriend idea would be included. THAT was one of the first of many problems facing SG-1 in seasons 7-10. Its almost as if the people who made the show for seasons 1-6 disappeared and some strangers appeared to take charge in seasons 7-10 – God what a disaster.
