What began as a quick trip to pick up our new French Bulldog, Lulu, turned into a bit of a nightmare for Fondy when the breeder informed her that, although he had accepted a personal check for the down payment, he would not be doing the same for the balance. Rather than head back home and wait for another opportunity, my royally pissed-off and not-to-be-denied wife scoured every Money Mart and bank in Coquitlam until she came up with the money and finally brought Lulu home. And, when she did, the rest of the pack where surprisingly accepting of the new addition. Bubba, who we expected to be the most domineering, was delighted to finally have a friend who could chase him. Maximus, who we expected to be the warmest and most welcoming, was actually somewhat aloof despite Lulu’s persistence in following him around the backyard. Finally, Jelly who, as alpha bitch and pack leader, we suspected would have the hardest time with the newcomer was incredibly nurturing and playful. Lulu took a shine to her almost immediately and, come lights out, crawled into Jelly’s doughnut bed and fell asleep, nestled alongside her.

Day 3 of Kindred I took the cast and crew to Green Timbers, a location shoot that necessitated our ordering in. We went with an old standby, Burgers, Etc., for barbecue chicken salads, pulled pork, and smoked sausage. For dessert, we were treated to something extra special by our extra special guest star/visitor – none other that Chef William Poole of Wen Chocolates in Colorado. It was a milk chocolate genoise with spiced French chocolate buttercream and elements of tofee with a rich chocolate ganache glaze. Incredible! After a tour of the sets, I took Chef Will on a tour of some of Vancouver’s tea and chocolate shops before capping things off with dinner at Tojo’s.

By the way, we watched Marty G.’s producer cut of Be All My Sins Remember’d today. Another great episode. Can’t say enough about the convening of the war council scene. Oh, and in dailies today = the wee turtles!

Today’s pics: more Comic Con, Chef Poole’s inspired creation, Chef Poole on tour, Lulu.

  1. Oh, what a precious little puppy. Glad to hear she’s getting along so well with your pugs. That makes things much easier. That’s not cool about the breeder, though; you’d think he would have told you guys that before you drove all the way over there.

    Oh, and…turtles! *squee!*

  2. Awwww..Lulu looks so cute. We recently bought an 11 week old Italian Greyhound to be a playmate with our other 6 month old Italian Greyhound. My husband and I absolutely love the breed. Thank goodness they are a miniature of the Greyhound breed.

Will’s creation looks absolutely devilish! I’d love to have a slice, could you send me one?

Oh, and Joe, I really love your blog.

  3. Oh my Lulu looks just so petite and adorable – good to hear that the others are taking to her! 😀

Nice photos – I love Hewlett’s funny faces. He certainly has a knack for pulling faces.

    Take care,
    M

  4. Lulu is adorable and will no doubt be completely in charge by the end of the week.

The choccie cake looked positively droolable…tis my birthday tomorrow (2nd) and unfortunately a Tesco smarties muffin is as good as i’ll get.

Thanks as always for the pics and input.

  5. Glad to hear Lulu made a good addition to the pack. I am ashamed to admit this, having read your blog for months now, but I just noticed you have a leather couch, and dogs who get on it. Don’t they scratch it with there claws? Also, who takes care of them while you’re gone? I’ve been debating about getting a pug myself but the 2 problems I have is that I travel a lot and I’m afraid they would scratch my leather furniture to junk.

  6. Okay Joe, now that you have Lulu can you say,it must be a hoot to watch her run on those teeny little legs. How cute does she look running??

  7. Oh Alipeeps you didn’t let me down, I knew I could count on you from yesterday’s blog posts. There really are some people on here that you can set your watch to.

  8. Special request Mr M.

More pics of Jewel’s legs please!!

    Thanks a million.

  9. Lulu’s adorable. I’m glad your other pugs have accepted her. Oy, that dessert looks so delicious, but extremely rich.

  10. Great to meet you this weekend at ComicCon, Joe!

You’re reccing Wen Chocolates again – guess that makes it official, I’ve got to go for a visit. Does this tempting creation you’ve pictured today have a name? I’d love to try it. Think Chef’ll give me a deal if I tell him I’m a big Joe Mallozzi fan? 😉

Love the blog, love the pics. Thank you for sharing so much with us!

    Jen from Denver

  11. Lulu is beautiful, and tell your wife
congrats on the newest addition to your family, more pictures!! The puggies seem to be very sweet with her too

    awwwww

  12. I’m going to be bold here: Can I have a pic of Mr Mcgillion holding the turtles? pleassseeeee? Strange, I know. But I am a biologist and have a gigantic crush on Mr Mcgillion. No worries I live a continent too far away for stalking porpoises. ;D

Now that I have behave (or is it had behaved? I have problems with the use of have/had and other things in english) as the gigantic fangirl I am, I must say that reading your blog is quite a fun way to avoid the boring part of science. Thanks for the gossip and, in a way, for introducing me to new and exotic food. I always get hungry after reading your blog.

  13. Your little Lulu makes me want to look at that breed for my next dog. The dogs look somewhat confused by her, but I’m glad they’re getting along. Oddly enough of my two dogs, the more personable one was alpha. He was Captain of his kingdom. He wouldn’t let my other dog an inch near his precious throne (bed). Ha!

  14. Was Atlantis shooting somewhere outside the studio today at around 12:30? I noticed a lack of those black trucks

Also, do you know if that 100 page special magazine is out or not?

  15. Vikki…back off the chocolate, woman! It’s MINE! MINE I say! Muahaha

    What?

OMG Joe..Lulu really is the cutest little thing. She makes me miss my Boston. Maybe I should try a Frenchie too.

  16. By the way, we watched Marty G.’s producer cut of Be All My Sins Remember’d today. Another great episode. Can’t say enough about the convening of the war council scene.

Well, we are listening Joe so keep talking about the War Council. 🙂 We promise we won’t tell anyone else, right everyone?.
Are the Wraith involved in the council? It seems to me Larrin wouldn’t reveal her people to the Wraith unless absolutely necessary. I hope this an all human council dealing with the possibilities of another Wraith double-cross like in Allies.

  17. OMG! I want a Puppy like Lulu!

I love the Pics, soo cute…The Pics of David arn’t bad either…
I love the one with Jane in the back ground!

    NZJ

  18. Lulu looks super awesome, congrats! Makes me want to buy a pug 😛 . I move into my own house in a year and a bit, now i want to invest in one haha.

  19. Lulu is just beautiful! I one thing I really regret about having young dogs/cats/ect. is that they grow up too fast. If only they could stay in that ‘childhood’ a bit longer. But then we say the same about human children too don’t we?….

And darn it, now I want something chocolate. That cake is too heavenly to look at!

  20. Joe,

A quick note to thank you for the great con coverage. The photos were great. Everyone was beautiful , but Ben Browder looked especially sexy.

Hooray to Fondy for getting the pup . I wouldn’t have waited either. I’ve been anticipating puppy photos all day. Great that everyone is getting along. I know you are relieved about that.

The large picture of the magazine. I love the photos from that shoot. Many of the ones I have seen are terribly airbrushed . Is there anywhere I can find those photos more natural looking ?

    Thanks

    Silver

  21. Just dropping you a note to say thank you for all the hot Ben B pics. Cam Mitchell scaped me too. ;p

  22. Hi Joe

Nice photo of Ben.. But he should smile more.. he looks sad..

You should cheer him up with your great sense of humor and maybe some lovely chocolate samples. You know you can’t hog it all..

    Have a great day

    Dori

  23. Clearly, Chef Poole is a god! My goodness, but that cake looks delicious.

Congrats on your new baby. She’s adorable. And here’s to ongoing smooth relations between the siblings.

  24. Joe, I know its just a rumor at this point, but nonetheless, I suspect that its true… and I and I’m sure many others, are very disappointed in the news that the new directo-to-DVD SG1 movies won’t be coming out any time soon. Spring ’08 for Ark of Truth and next fall for Continum. (especially since AT said that the events in the movies occurred before the events of S4)…

My question is this; do you know anything about the decisions to hold back the releases? Are the spring/fall 08 dates true, likely to be true, or totally false?

  25. Nothing you can really do about it, but I have to say that cover for the Atlantis season 3 DVD looks awful. Everyone looks fine except Joe F. Looks like they photoshopped someone else’s head onto his body and got the angle wrong.

  26. Lulu is absolutely adorable! I’m glad Fondy was able to find enough cash to bring her home where it sounds like she belongs like she was always there. I can’t wait to see more pics of her as she gets older!

  27. Wow, what a sweet little pup. I can smell the puppy breath. Hope you and your wife have many happy years with that little cutie. Oh, and the pics of David and Joe were great too.

    Rian

  28. Wee turtles? You are too kind!

Love that picture of Jewel just standing behind David as he points himself out. Not sure what it means, but it amuseth me.

Glad to hear that Lulu is being accepted! You just never know when you introduce a new dog to the household. When we brought our last dog, Roxy, home, it was a strange mix. The alpha of our house was aloof, but refused our other dog to yell/scream/pick on the puppy.

More pictures of Lulu tomorrow? (Or I guess that would be today technically.) Puppies make me smile.

  29. Oh my god the cake looks absolutely delicious! Can I have one for my birthday this weekend? Please? 😉

  30. Lulu is simply adorable! She really looks at home with your other babies. I’m so glad they have accepted her so well.

I have a puppy who’s 9 months old now, and I just wondered how the toilet training is going with Lulu?

When my labrador, Lucy, came home with us at 8 weeks old, she hadn’t a clue where to go, poor puppy, and my poor floor! It took some weeks, okay, months, before we didn’t have any mishaps, and I hope Lulu gets the hang of things more quickly than my pup did! Saying that, you’re an experienced dog owner, and must know the ropes. As a first time dog owner, I hadn’t a clue what to do, each dog book I read said different things about how to encourage the puppy to ’empty’, as they wonderfully described it, outside and not indoors! I expect Lulu is fully trained already!

  31. Lulu looks absolutely adorable. Good job to your wife for doing what it took to bring her home!

    That cake looks delicious!

Happy first day of August by the way!

  32. Hi Sir,
In spite of the fact that I do understand that you are very busy for the moment and do not have much time for our questions may I ask which stories of s10 SG1 eps would have done ( or deserved to be ) a good feature film, considering that to do a film is not the same thing that a tv show?
    Which one of s2 SGA?

  33. Wee turtles? All the SCB tartan turtles are more than happy to see the return of Paul.

Cute wee ‘dug’ is young Lulu – but her ‘lugs’ are awfully big are they not.

Glad she is settling in. Maybe it brings out Jelly’s maternal side.

  34. As a recent addition to the readership of your blog, which always makes me smile, I was totally shocked when I saw my friend Erin in your pictures! She is the one who has the “Cameron Mitchell Scaped Me” shirt on. She is just one of the many people I have met since I started watching Stargate. Thanks for expanding my universe to include such wonderful people! See what you do does make the world better!

  35. Thanks for all the SGA pics you posted on July 30 and 31. Loved them to bits!

Very cute pics of the pugs too.

According to the Internet, today’s Jason Momoa’s birthday. Say happy bday to Jason on behalf of the SGA fans. Well, at least on my behalf 🙂

Any bday cake on set? Any chance of getting some pics? *grins*

  36. Cute puppy pics! 🙂

Definitely a big boo hiss on the breeder for pulling that stunt at the last minute – they should have informed your wife before she arrived of the change. Almost seems fishy, like the breeder had possibly had gone & done a double sale on the pup & was trying to work their way out of it, while still keeping the deposit paid by you guys.

But, very glad to see that the pack has accepted her w/o fuss and that she’s been adopted by the lead trouble maker. 🙂

Great to see more CC pictures – Everyone looked to be having too much fun – Especially David Hewlett who certainly likes to ham it up for the camera.

And man, that cake looks awesome! I guess I now have an excuse to visit friends out in Colorado Springs now -gonna have to check out Chef Wen’s establishment… 🙂

Okay, back to studying… gotta pass my board exam this week!

  37. Hi Joe:

I just wanted to say that, even though your blog has taken on a decidely “anemic” direction of late it is nice that you have risen above most of the crap that you let through in earlier days of your blog.

It seems that this blog has taken on an air of civility in some ways with the fact you seem to be a lot more discerning in what you make public, and with how you choose to respond to and address the fans, it is a pleasant surprise. Kudos for being able to make the change.

    Shari L.

  38. Ahhhhh, puppies! You have beautiful dogs, Joe! 🙂 (And as others have commented, the breeder was being a turd.)

That cake looks incredibly good! Food is art.

Oh, yeah, nice pics from Comic-Con! – probably should mention them since I was smiling wide while looking at them. 😀

Wee turtles? Cool! I love turtles.

    Jill_Ion

  39. Awwww Lulu looks so adorable! Puppies are so cute when they’re so small and haven’t yet grown into their ears! 😆

Oh Alipeeps you didn’t let me down, I knew I could count on you from yesterday’s blog posts. There really are some people on here that you can set your watch to.

Thank you. I make no secret of my opinions of ill-mannered behaviour. 😀 Of course, the fact that you feel you can so accurately predict which posts I will respond to must surely indicate that you too, somewhere deep inside, recognise that those same posts are, in fact, rude and ill-mannered..? 😉

  40. Joe-

Lulu is precious. But that dog breeder sounds sketchy….needs cash only eh? Hope he’s not running his gig under the table!

Since you and Fondy work, what do you do with the children, er, dogs during the day? Do you have a pet sitter, do they have a romper room to run around in or do you (gasp!) crate them? Do you leave on Animal Planet for them to keep them company?

  41. Aw…little Lulu is finally home. See, Jelly proved you wrong! How adorable. Thanks for sharing.

How does it feel like to have four dogs, now? Will there be room for a fifth!?

    Camy

  42. Hey Joe:

Not answering questions anymore? Not that everything you provide for cool information isn’t wonderful and appreciated…it really is. So, if you decide to answer questions again, here’s one:

    1) Since Jewelle and Morenna worked together on Firefly, and, therefore, know each other, did they get a chance to meet up with each other on set during their respective shoots and get an opportunity to catch up on old times?

    Patricia

  43. Lulu is absolutely adorable!!!! It makes me want a puppy, but sadly the landlord says no.

  44. Your new pooch is just as adorable as the rest of the happy bunch.

I, too, adopted a new pet yesterday. Unfortunately, things haven’t been going as well with my new addition as they have with yours. We’ve made some progress, though. After a sleepless night trying to calm her (the kitten) down, she’s not spitting and hissing so much at me — and she just ate her first meal in about 20 hours. Horay! See my blog if you want to know the details.

    KJC

  45. That cake… Looks amazing. Thanks for all photos – David Hewlett’s facial expression! Haha.

Just a few questions for whenever we see the mail bag back!

    1. Lorne and Zelenka have had such a great fan reaction since they were introduced – was it your intention to keep them as recurring characters from the beginning or did it just sort of evovle? Have you ever planned to keep a recurring character and then decided it wouldn’t work?

    2. There have been questions about Teyla/Sheppard, Ronon/Teyla, Sheppard/Weir, etc. scenes, and I was wondering if there will be any good friendship scenes between McKay and Sheppard to look forward to in season 4.

(Sorry if these have been asked, it seems they might have been, but I scoured the past entries and couldn’t find anything!)

    Thanks again!

  46. I saw where Atlantis is returning to its 10pm spot on Friday’s this fall. Are you happy with that decision? It seems like a show of faith from the network (crosses fingers). I just hate that your lead in will be Flash Gordon. The promos aren’t doing a thing for me.

Congrats on bringing baby Lulu home! She is seriously precious. And what was that website for Wen’s again???? You should get a commission…

  47. Alipeeps quoted here “Thank you. I make no secret of my opinions of ill-mannered behaviour. 😀 Of course, the fact that you feel you can so accurately predict which posts I will respond to must surely indicate that you too, somewhere deep inside, recognise that those same posts are, in fact, rude and ill-mannered..? 😉 “

You are quite astute as am I — I am always 1000% concious of what I write and how I write it and no post goes forward to Joe-land without my full knowledge and understanding of exactly what I am saying, why I am saying it and what I hope to see from it.

My posts do not come from idle hands doing the devils work — every post has a meaning and a purpose and most of my posts garner exactly the response I expect (and no not all of my posts have been negative such as this particular one. However, with this topic I WAS truly surprised and disappointed in seeing how the panel was conducted both from an audience perspective and a panel perspective and it made me realize that if this is what cons are I can and will continue to, live without them. Your response just put the icing on the cake for me, as expected.)

I never met a cake I didn’t like, untill I developed diabetes that is.
Your cake made my blood sugars implode just looking at it.
And do the words healthy diet hold any significance for you? ;D
Wot! no ice cream with the cake…double chocolate, chocolate chip!!!
By the way has the chocolate I sent you arrived yet? Hope you enjoy it.

Okay, I see what you’re saying. You were not only aware that you were being insulting but you actively intended to be so. Well. That makes it all so much better then.. :S

Remind me next time I am, for my own entirely personal reasons, not entirely pleased with how an events turns out to make sure I tell the people involved how dumb they are… 😉

Out of interest, what did you hope to “see from” your post about the “dumb” behaviour at ComicCon? An apology? An admission of culpability? An agreement from Joe that he and his friends are dumb? Repentence for not having met your personal expectations of what the event should be?

You see, the point I think you have perhaps missed is that my concern is not for the opinions you express but the way you expressed them. You could have expressed that you felt the panel was not as serious as it could have or should have been. You could have stated that you had expected the event to be less light-hearted and jokey. But you didn’t. Your use of language was pejorative. What did you honestly think you would achieve by coming onto someone’s personal blog and telling them that they and their friends acted dumb and immature? How is using insulting language ever going to garner any kind of positive response?

  50. Hey Joe, just wanted to say thanks for all your photos and goss from Comic Con! It’s great to read and see what’s going on but also to have an insight into what it’s like actually being a guest! Limos eh? Nice.

Aww. Congrats on the new addition to your family! Lulu is adorable! And so good that the others have accepted her into the fold! Funny how they don’t always react in the way we predict!

  51. “My posts do not come from idle hands doing the devils work — every post has a meaning and a purpose and most of my posts garner exactly the response I expect….”

Oh my God, you were paying attention when you wrote this?!

You’re right, you should stay away from conventions.

The informal and friendly atmosphere could be a shock to your system.

  52. Do you have any feelings on Atlantis being put back in the 10pm timeslot on SciFi? Is it going to be a good thing in the long run?

  53. Hi Joe

Welcome back from comic con and thanks for posting your great pictures.
I just read on gateworld that Atlantis will be on a 10pm after Flash Gordon at 9 and doctor who at 8. HOw do you feel about this? Will this be the potentially best thing as it did well at this timeslot a few years ago or the death knell?
    Thanks

  54. Holy…wow…

To think that there are actually people out there who go out of their WAY to create insults for the mere pleasure of slinging them about on a blog is an insane idea to me. Apparently, however, Alipeeps and myself are in the dark with this newest tradition.

  55. I heard a rumor awhile ago from people who toured the SGA set that Sam, having taken over Weir’s office, had some pictures on her desk of Jack, Daniel, and Teal’c (uh-oh, looks like another subtle hint at a Sam/Teal’c romance?!)…but why no Cam or Vala? I actually found those two friendships to be the most compelling of season 10. It’s admittedly a small quibble, but it’s still a little disappointing.

Speaking of Sam/Vala, can I just thank you for finally writing a scene with the two of them hanging out in “Family Ties?” I only wish that deleted scene from “Morpheus” had been in there as well, it was too cute.

It’s often hard for me to find strong female friendships in sf, so I’m glad to see that you made a conscious effort to establish one. I can’t wait to see some of the interactions between Carter/Keller/Teyla/(Weir??)
