We had our visual effect spotting today for This Mortal Coil. “What, pray tell, is a visual effects spotting?”you may ask. Well, after the director and producer edits (in which the visual effects already proposed, planned, discussed, and set up have been clearly identified within the body of the episode) proceeding the shooting of the episode (in which the visual effects already proposed, planned and discussed are set up) following the visual effects meeting (in which an episode’s visual effects are planned and discussed) subsequent to the concept meeting (in which an episode’s visual effects are proposed), the producer, editor, and VFX supervisors gather in a tiny, darkened editing suite to debate the mess we’ve gotten ourselves into.

The editor will take us through each visual effects as it appears in the episode, from cinchy staff blasts to complex space battles. “The first shot is at 7:13,”the editor may say and bring up the shot onscreen. It’s a puddle pass-thru. Easy enough. “21:12 – McKay turns into a werewolf.” Ah, something a little meatier. Onscreen, the human McKay is standing there for some three seconds – then we cut to another three seconds of Werewolf McKay before cutting over to Teyla’s horrified reaction. We discuss the visual effect that is going to bridge the two McKay looks. Perhaps we’d like to go with a weird alien fluctuation, a morph that causes McKay’s features to melt like wax and reform. Or maybe it’s more of a transformative progression: whiskers sprouting, ears growing, fangs forming. Once we’re all on the same page, we decide on the very important length of the effect. Is six seconds long enough? Does the transformation need to be longer? Do we want to “add head” to the shot of a pre-werewolf McKay (when one “adds head”, one adds time to the beginning of the shot)? Or should we “add tail” to the shot of the full werewolf McKay (when one “adds tail”, one is adding time to the end of a shot)? Once we are all in agreement, we move on.

And so it goes, in that cramped little room, as we thrash out the finer details. Is the ship traveling from left to right or vice versa? Should we add an errant wraith blast to the shot of Ronon returning fire? Do we want to do a bit of a camera move on the matte shot (usually an establishing shot, like that of a distant wraith lab, in which a unique element – like said wraith lab – is superimposed on another image – like a surrounding forest for instance) to make it less static?

Depending on how many visual effects we’ve budgeted, the process can take anywhere from ten minutes to the better part of the day. On this day, we were only in there for an hour. Between now and the finished shot, the gang at VFX will drop by to show us the various stages of the shots in question, from wire-frame temps to flawless silver ships making the jump to hyperspace.

Boy. Can’t wait to see how werewolf McKay turns out. I’ll let you know.

  1. In regards to season 4 and the the SG1 movies, where is season 4? Before the movies, during, or after? Thanks.

  2. Is Lorne second in command? Or is that other random major?

I had some grits the other day that were not gross, but in fact a little tasty. Along with the delicious sweet potato pancakes with brown sugar syrup. Southern brunch rocks.

  3. Hiya Joe,

I think I like the sound of werewolf McKay… mind you, I kinda always saw Rodney as a big pussy cat though.

I wonder, are there any plans for you to “guest star” perhaps in a small role in SGA? Eg, like Marty G did last season as a backdrop Danger Beckett?

Do you guys ever get invited or tempted to do this? Or it’s just hard to find the time as writing is already a full time job?

  4. me again, so you have any spoilers your allowed to drop for me ive been watching finally over and over again lol.

  5. I watched the Spacey Awards and wanted to congratulate the whole SGA crew on getting the Spacey for Fave TV Show (and Dave will be insuffarable having gotten the Fave TV Character for McKay).

    CONGRATS FROM ONTARIO!

  6. Boy. Can’t wait to see how werewolf McKay turns out. I’ll let you know.

    and

Answer: I did? Was it at the same time I admitted to the Kennedy assassination?

Heee… you do make me chortle. For which I duly thank you.. 🙂

I tried hard to think of something witty to say but, you know what? It’s 1:30am here and I’ve not long gotten done interviewing a candidate (damned international time zones!) and I’m done for the day. Brain no workee no more.

Atlantis good. Me likee. Joe’s blog fun. Make laff. Go sleepy now….

  7. So what’s your take on the nuttiness that’s been polluting your blog for the last 2 days? To me this can only mean strong viewer ratings (hopefully) for the last 2 episodes. Let’s hope the trend continues well into season 4, (Weir or not).

Although after watching one of the old Season 5 SG1 episodes, I honestly am over the Sam Carter character.

I tell you one thing though, I love all the characters that has made up SGA, but McKay, he’s just special – in the sense when he goes into one of his tirades, I want to punch him :-). That just shows to me what a great actor David is.

No food today Joe? Or did the werewolf McKay ate it all?

  8. Hi Joe,

So an SG1 character in the second half of the season…We know that it’s not Mitchell or Vala, you said that Jack probably wouldn’t make an appearance, and Sam’s already a regular. If it’s someone from the main cast that leaves Landry, Daniel, or a second appearance from Teal’c. Would you like to narrow it down?

P.S. I guess you couldn’t outrun Martin and Brad but that’s O.K. I’m sure they’re pretty sneaky too!

  9. O_O Werewolf Rodney???

    *SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEE*!!!!!!!

Oh, wait … he’s gonna be all evil, then — or at least go after his friends with deadly intent — ain’t he? *Pout* Oh well, I’ll take what I can get — my fave character as a wolf? I can’t be tooooo picky, I guess, sou desu ne? 😉

(Wha-aaat, you didn’t think my name was Wolfie for nothing, did you? ^^)

  10. I’ve always loved both Atlantis and SG-1’s opening themes, but I’m curious… Is there one you like better?

And one other thing… Did Amanda Tapping have to lobby you guys to let her keep the longer hair? 😉

Submersion was really well done, by the way. Glad to see the ratings reflect that!

  11. Now that most of season 4 is scripted, which ep do you think is shaping up to be a fan favorite? Which one is your favorite? (Spoiler-ish reasons why would be awesome) Thanks!

  12. Anonymous #3 writes: “Even you admitted yourself the Shep/Weir was more popular than Shep/Teyla…”

Answer: I did? Was it at the same time I admitted to the Kennedy assassination?

Back in May 4’s blog you were confronted about the same thing and you didn’t deny it. Your answer was you’re just not interested.

    May 4:

Grace writes: “ About this comment from you: I don’t think anyone expects you to show people out on dates or anything like that. What confuses people is that YOU KNOW THIS. You know that Shep/Weir has more support than Shep/Teyla.”

Answer: To be perfectly honest, it doesn’t really interest me. Sheppard/Talking Chimp (Shemp) can get ten times as many votes as Sheppard/Discarded Melba Toast (Shdmt) and it still won’t impact the creative decisions we make.

  13. Hi Joe:

1)What year were you born? 2)Does Bam Bam have pugs because you talked him into them? 3)Have you ever traveled across Canada by car? 4)Have you ever done your own home renovations or are you stuck paying for them like I am? Or do you just move to another house?

Thanks for being so much fun, Joe.

    Patricia

  14. Dear Joe, I’m just wondering if you get upset when people rant about two characters getting closer as friends or whatever. I feel that the hug I saw was just friends comforting or supporting each other and I’m sure it would be true with any true friends, male or female. Not every hug has to be romantic or sexual. I know many of my friends feel the same.

I’m really looking forward to seeing Miller’s Crossing. I love seeing McKay and his sister together, and the thought of Ronon on Earth… sounds exciting.

McKay as a werewolf, hmmm. Who’s going to be Frankenstein and the Mummy?

Did you do any fun things with Teyla’s pregnancy? Like cravings for some exotic Athosian foods or maybe some one introducing her to chocolates?

Last one. Have you decided which pug you’re taking home? They all look so cute.

  15. if you could put Tony Soprano in any other ending what would it be?

  16. First off I must say the pug pups are absolutely adorable!

Secondly, the geek in me must ask whether or not you were thinking of Nathan Fillion or any of the other characters from Firefly to possibly guest on the show, since Jewel Staite and Morena Baccarin have already gotten spots in the stargate universe?

  17. Camy writes: “Regarding SGA, how were the ratings for Submersion?”

Thank you, Mr. Mallozzi. That is somewhat of a good news, right? I”ll keep my fingers and toes crossed while watching the next couple of episodes. They are two of my favorites.

Question: Not much has been mentioned for Ronon besides his big role in Reunion, can you share any additional tidbits or developments for Ronon’s character in Season 4?

    Thanks,
    Camy

  18. Hello Joe,

I thoroughly enjoy both the show and this blog. It is nice to be able to keep up with something that is updated everyday. Thank you for taking the time to do it.

On another note, I was wondering what news could be gained about Torri Higginson. I know that you said that you could not reveal the title of her fourth episode, but do you have an idea of where in the episode lineup it may fall? Is it towards the back half of the season, since the front half has already been written?

I know you probably do not wish to answer, but I thought I would ask anyway. Thanks either way.

Can’t wait for more news on season four! It certainly sounds interesting so far. I’m looking forward to seeing an evolution of Michael’s character. He is a most intriguing villain.

I hope you are doing well, and good luck with the pug pups!

  20. Hey Joe,
I’m going for Thai food this weekend. Any suggestions? Like spicy, but not drain a fire hydrant spicy. Any help would be appreciated.

  21. In the Shroud Adria talking to Daniel about Vala’s affection for him. He goes “affect..What ?” I thought Vala likes Daniel and he is clueless about her feelings ? Is Daniel interested in Vala romantically ?
In scenes right before a meeting, they are often shown off together talking. So I think they are at least very close friends now. When she was missing in Memento Mori, I thought Daniel realized he had deeper feelings for her. The end scene In MM, I didn’t get whether the gang was just teasing him or they thought he was in denial. Mitchell gives Vala a look or words something which makes her smile. I can’t tell if he says anything.
I have seen the entire season 10. I’m just trying to put things in perspective. I want to know if I interpreted the scenes correctly or just saw what I wanted to see.
I was also disappointed in the Sopranos ending. Thanks for giving us a memorable finale for Stargate.

that’s true. but when you ‘know’ the two ppl involved in the hug have attraction feelings for one another, then even an innocent hug isn’t innocent, because those feelings are still there and still influencing them.

    just saying…

  23. When Carter goes out on missions with the team, Sheppard will have to take orders from her. Will there be any clashes between them considering his history of disobeying the chain of command?

  24. Hi. Congrats to all the SGA crew for winning fave TV show on the Spaceys!!!!

When naming a character is it something that is discussed or is it the writers choice?

  25. Is there really going to be a werewolf!McKay bit? Because if so, I think I may just have to love you forever. (Actually that sounds like something that could fit into Doppelganger.)

  26. Joe,

If I’ve been reading the info you spit out in this blog correctly, then am I right in saying that Quarantine is the episode that will feature an SG-1 character?

  27. Hannah said…
Is Lorne second in command? Or is that other random major?

Don’t know if you’ve seen the news, but as of carter’s arrival, Shep’s 2IC. Nothing like having an SG1 character as his boss. Blah!

  28. TV Guide has recently said that Continuum will not be released until spring of 2008. Can you confirm that this is true and that the release has been pushed back so long?

  29. Those pug puppies were cute (hmm, new method of distraction?) – have you committed to getting one or do you have time to make up your minds?

Also, knowing that one pug is a handful, are additional pugs multiplicative or asymptotic as far as the tendency to get into trouble and amount of attnetion they require (or exponential as a friend of mine with Jack Russells found)?

  30. FOUR. Pugs. Oh good gods bless (and help) you both. (Do post photos once you bring her home!) 🙂

  32. Would SGA consider doing some direct-to-DVD movies if Sci Fi Channel doesn’t pick up a fifth season ?

Not that I want to see you get cancelled, far from it, but you know. This TV viewer was burn so many times, with so many unfair cancellations. Might as well start considering options in advance.

  33. Joe: Just for a chuckle/ reference from the web. Guardian Observer’s 2007 Style guide pretty straight forward. The 1928 one from the Manchester Guardian is a hoot. Enjoy/

PS: Enjoying the blogging. I’m a little worried about the many-headed pug beast that is emerging. A pug Cerberus./Almost a Hydra….keeps growing more heads./Good Luck!

  34. Going through my SG1 collection (for the several dozenth time).

Will Jennifer Hayley pop up in SGA? Super smarty pants like that must have some Ancient genealogy!
What about the “Giant Aliens” and Nick.
Grace… Those (super powerful, but helpless without Carter) aliens – Travellers perhaps?

Come on Joe, Anything? Are we going to see any of the SG1 loose ends, or only ever SG1 main cast cameos? (Which are nice anyway)

  35. For those fans who used to rant and rave about Weir ’emasculating’ Shep, wait until Carter gets into the mix. He’ll be a eunuch!

  36. Yo, Joe!! I’ve been meaning to do that…since I started watching G.I. Joe again. ^_^

What sort of material is the new uniform made out of?! The one I saw on Carter for the Spacey Awards just didn’t have that 100% cotton look, nor did it look like leather (but I couldn’t really tell).

  37. A couple of weeks ago (May 25) you mentioned having an autistic character on Atlantis. Was that a hypothetical “if there was an autistic character…” comment, or a “there will be an autistic character” comment?

  38. im wanting to know if we will see any romance for Teylas character this season and some backstory of her family?

  39. Joe

Were you on the grassy knoll or in the library? and how do you manage to stay so young? You’re not an alien are you?

    YOu’re a funny guy…

    Dori

  40. The whumpers love the fact that you are aware of their hearts’ desires 🙂 How do the actors take it? Do the writers sit around a table and discuss possible whump scenarios that will fit in with the plots? And do you ever get opposition from the actors for those scenes?
I’m just picturing a bunch of you around a table discussing amounts of blood, and who hurts who 🙂

  41. Hi!

Your blog always entertains me. For some random reason, when I read the McKay turning into werewolf I pictured David morphing into a scary version of his dog Mars, which made me laugh even more than normal. I think I need more coffee.

  42. …I am skeptical about your loud claim about Merwolf ;D. I thinks Joe is a pullin’ ours leg. Now, if you had said Radek turns into a werewolf, I would have been more inclined to say, “BWAH?!” as he already has the fly-away hair ;).

  43. Hey Joe,

So, has the “hidden clue” aired yet or is it coming up?

    Thanks, Lauren.

  44. Is it possible that someday in future we can see some kind Stargate movie for IMAX?

    ~~

Ain’t necessarily so, or at least no more so than when Weir was expedition leader. It could conceivably be that the relationship between Sheppard and Carter is akin to the relationship between a base commander and a tenant commander. Think U.S. Special Operations Command which is headquartered on MacDill AFB. The MacDill base commander can set policy ands regulations that pertains to SOCOM’s tenancy on the base and resource allocation but he doesn’t get to tell COMSOCOM how to fight the war. That is, within his defined area of responsibility, Carter may have no more say in how Sheppard runs the military on Atlantis than did Weir. Just because someone is superior in rank does not mean that said superior officer has final authority.

    Suzann

  46. dont suppose you’ve mangaged to get any shep backstory into the second half of season 4?

  47. Anonymous said…
For those fans who used to rant and rave about Weir ’emasculating’ Shep, wait until Carter gets into the mix. He’ll be a eunuch!

Yes, because Carter is just the sort of character who neuters men…right, okaaaay…

Shep a eunech? Er, I don’t think so somehow.

Nice to see such intelligent posters expressing their well thought out views again!

How entertaining. Well, Anonymous, at least your post has given me a chuckle today! Well done! 🙂

  48. Joe,

I have a Daniel question concerning
Atlantis. Daniel is the one that discovered Atlantis and wanted to go there in “Rising” and was kept from going in “Prometheus Unbound”.
At the begining of season 9 Daniel was the one packing and on his way to Atlantis when Mitchell was trying to get SG1 back together. Daniel was determined to go to Atlantis and would have gone if Vala hadn’t stopped him from going.

I guess what I’m trying to say is Daniel would have rather gone to Atlantis than rejoin SG1. Obviously Jack or Landry had given him permission to go or he would not have been packing when approached by Mitchell.

If the Ori storyline is rapped up in the first movie then will you explain why Daniel wouldn’t permanently take off for Atlantis? I think it’s great that Sam is going but I would just like it mentioned why Daniel wouldn’t go. The character of Daniel has been trying to get to Atlantis for 3 years now and it just doen’t make any sense.

    Thanks Joe

  49. anonymous said: “[…]Come on Joe, Anything? Are we going to see any of the SG1 loose ends, or only ever SG1 main cast cameos? (Which are nice anyway)”

I don’t understand why SG-1 fans keep coming up with this “let’s use SGA for giving closure to SG-1 story lines”. It’s gotten annoying and tiring.

I don’t watch SG-1. I would prefer the cast from s2 and s3 unchanged in s4, but I love what I’ve read so far about s4. I think, if done right, cast changes are not necessarily a bad thing.

But Atlantis has its own mythology and stories and some of their fans only watch Atlantis and never liked SG-1 because THEIR mythology don’t appeal to them.

If SG-1 fans feel they have some unfinished stories, look for their resolution in SG-1 movies, not in a different show like Atlantis. Just because one character from your show is going to Atlantis, it doesn’t mean we have to watch whatever story started in SG-1 and was never followed up.

  50. For Suzann regarding the Carter/Sheppard relationship stuff posted earlier; From Sci-Fi.com story quote by R. Cooper:

“The difference between Carter and [Dr.] Weir [Torri Higginson] is that Carter is in the military,” Cooper added. “In fact, when she joins them she’s a full-bird colonel, and she’s a superior to [Lt. Col. John] Sheppard [played by Joe Flanigan], so there’s really not much he can say or do; she’s his superior officer.”

  51. “Will Jack make an appearance in S4 ?”

Boy do I hope so! Return was the most exciting Atlantis episode ever!

  52. I, for one, am happy to see Sam Carter in S4 of Atlantis. Carter’s a wonderful character, and AT is a terrific actress. In fact, now that SG1 is over, the only reason I am now going to start watching Atlantis is because of Carter.
To be honest, I didn’t really care for the Weir character as introduced in SG1. I thought she was very bland. Not sure how Weir was like in the first three seasons of Atlantis, perhaps she was more likeable….?
Regardless, I am looking forward to seeing Carter and AT.
BTW, just as a personal preference, I hope Carter doesn’t get shipped with anyone on Atlantis. I prefer her shipped with Jack, even if it is rarely and subtly hinted at! Ten years of unrequited Sam/Jack shipping on SG1 was enough; I just couldn’t stand the thought of her being shipped with anyone else after 10 years of waiting and hoping for an S/J resolution.
Thanks for keeping an entertaining and informative blog 🙂

  53. So Mckay turns into a werewolf but you guys don’t read fan fiction. Yeah right. Pull the other one – it’s got bells on!

  54. Today (the 13th) is my birthday!!
Now a serious note, when the shows are all over and done with,(I hope some day not soon what one piece from the show will you want to keep, and why?

  55. To re-iterate Yasmin’s quote…. What! No food today?

The werewolf-Rodney idea is interesting, and I like it. Does this mean that Ronon’s gonna have to kick Rodney’s butt?

  56. There’s a rumour going on GW that Jack might die in “Continuum”.Please Joe pout it to rest !

  57. I was just watching Runner and Sateda and I was curious if there are any plans to explore Ronon’s unique physiology. For example, why the wraith stopped feeding on him and his accelerated recuperative ability. Do all Satedans possess the recuperative ability or is it part of Ronon’s genetic makeup?

  58. I read on Gateworld that The Real World may not be in S3 DVD box set. I know Ivon deals with this, but could you find out about it?

  59. M said…
I think I like the sound of werewolf McKay… mind you, I kinda always saw Rodney as a big pussy cat though.

ROFLMAO!!! I just had a mental image of Rodney doing some sort of Cringer/Battle Cat transformation!

    Can’t stop laughing/coughing!

  60. Two questions:
    1. Based on the pictures of Carter, and her uniform, is it safe to assume that her going to Alantis means that it is now militarized?
    2. I’m kinda confused; if Carter is in Atlantis as of season 4, how is she still a part of SG-1 in the movies? Or will the movies be realsed before season 4 airs? Or am I completely missing something?

  61. Is McKay gonna claw Sheppard eyes out when there’s a full moon, he gets more cranky during this time and later eats Teyla tava bean pot soup and fart a tropical storm hurricane wind that almost level the eastern pier?

  62. *waves*

No food pix today? Have you got food poisoning again and that’s the reason you couldn’t bear to post any scrumdiddlyumptious’s? Or were you just completely hacked off with your blog yesterday and couldn’t be bothered? I love your food pics, because it just makes me realise how unadventurous I am with food. Through your blog though, i’m actually getting better and have now eaten languistine (I think it was called). And I have to say, it looked a hell of a lot less scary than the picture of the lobster you posted. :o)

So Joe, let’s talk werewolves! McKay as a werewolf? Nah, he hasn’t got the right chest hair for it, unlike a certain pilot! 😛 But, it has to be said, McKay’s certainly got the snapping part down to perfection. (And I mean that in the nicest possible way). 😉

So any more clues on Rise of the Googlions? Maybe? Please? Do I need to beg? *flashes Joe her most cheekiest smile* :o)

Okay i’m done being silly for the night. But before I depart, *insert shameless plug* I’m taking part in a Race for Life, for Cancer research, and have been advised to get the link ‘out there’ so to speak. Hope you don’t mind, but if you do, please feel free to do your snippedy doodah thing that you do so well. 😉

    *hugs*

  63. “21:12 – McKay …”

JM are you a Rush fan and are letting people know about it subtly? Or was this just a coincidence with the time and McKay (a Canadian) and the name of their Sci-Fi based album?

I read on Gateworld that The Real World may not be in S3 DVD box set. I know Ivon deals with this, but could you find out about it?

I think the info on GW is that “The Real World” doesn’t have a commentary on it, not that it won’t be included on the Season 3 DVD.

  64. Hey Joe

Will Niam the Asuran ever return?

The possiblity for his return was definitly spelled out in First Strike.

He was a great character and he represented all those Asurans who wanted to ascend

  65. Hi Joe,

we’ve been having “Family Ties” discussion at Farscape board and some people started discussing the Van Gogh’s painting above Vala’s bed. Was it Vala who chose this reproduction to decorate her room? If she chose that painting herself was it because that deep down inside she is sad and lonely just like Van Gogh used to be?

  66. I know this is a day late – My alterative name ideas for “Rise of The Googlions” is “Aspersion of the 4,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000” or “R.P.G. – Revolution of the Pegasus Galaxy” Also how much chocolate would a girl have to send to get a walk on role to Atlantis? ;0)

  67. Hottest dining spot in my area is Holstein’s (pronounced not like the cow), because of the final scene of The Sopranos. There’ll be no photos of the food however; it’s far from gourmet. You go there for sandwiches and ice cream, esp in the summertime.

  68. Hi Joe,
Have you read any of Philip Pullman books (His Dark Materials) to be specific its a trilogy (for any who dont know) and the first part has been filmed and is due out at the end of this year here in the UK. What are your thoughts on finding a favourite read is being given the movie treatment.

  69. Joe,

How is Sam’s addition to the storyline being handled on the show
    character wise?

Is it a smooth transition or are there some problems to be worked out through the course of season 4 while the character is there.

    Thank you.

  70. Answer: We will definitely be seeing a more emotional side to Rodney this season. And, while his character will not be taking a dark turn, there will be dark moments ahead for McKay.

A more emotional McKay?! Yikes! The mind boggles.

Seriously, thanks for all the behind-the-scenes, this-is-how-it’s-done information. I love knowing how things work.

Congratulations on the Spaceys! Very cool. I just wish SGA and SG1 got their due respect and kudos in the U.S. as well.

I loved Submersion and am looking forward to Vengeance. While I am not a horror fan, I thoroughly enjoy dark mind whump.

  71. “I don’t understand why SG-1 fans keep coming up with this “let’s use SGA for giving closure to SG-1 story lines”.

Just because one character from your show is going to Atlantis, it doesn’t mean we have to watch whatever story started in SG-1 and was never followed up.”

I know this is hard for some “Atlantis Fans” to understand, but there are a breed of fans called “Stargate Fans” in which we happen to be fanatical about both series. But hey – who cares about us hmm?

As for SG1 storylines in Atlantis, I hate to burst your bubble, but Atlantis is an SG1 story line. They are not mutually exclusive, as much as some people in their pretend realities like to believe. Everyone complaining for history and character building, but then complaining because that involves Sg1 to some degree. Its not something you can exclude. Atlantis’ history is SG1.
