As most of you probably already know, Stargate SG-1’s 200th episode has been nominated for a Hugo Award in the category of Best Dramatic Presentation Short Form, up against a Battlestar Galactica and about a half-dozen episodes of Dr. Who. While checking out the various other categories, I noticed that a number of the nominees vying for Best Short Story are available online. A terrific bunch of candidates. And being the film buff I am, I found Timothy Pratt’s Twilight Zone-esque “Impossible Dream” a particularly enjoyable read. If you have the time, why not swing by and check out the stories yourselves – and if you like what you read, maybe think about picking up further readings by the respective authors (I’ve included some suggestions):

Neil Gaiman’s “How to Talk to Girls at Parties” –
http://www.neilgaiman.com/exclusive/shortstories/partiesstory
Pick up: the Sandman series (graphic novels), Fragile Things, Neverwhere, American Gods.

Bruce McAllister’s “Kin” –
http://www.asimovs.com/_issue_0704/Kin.shtml
Pick up: Dream Baby

Timothy Pratt’s “Impossible Dreams” –
http://www.asimovs.com/_issue_0704/Impossibledreams.shtml

Robert Reed’s “Eight Episodes” –
http://www.asimovs.com/_issue_0704/8episodes.shtml
Pick up: The Cuckoo’s Boys, The Well of Stars, Marrow.

Benjamin Rosenbaum’s “The House Beyond Your Sky” –
http://www.strangehorizons.com/2006/20060904/house-f.shtml
Check out: “Embracing-the-New”, “Start the Clock” – available online.

Paul finished his pass on This Mortal Coil and did a great job. The script is much clearer and cleaner. We celebrated in the grand writer tradition, lunching on chicken pot pie and avocado salad, then swung by the conference room where we picked up our very own Ark of Truth t-shirts to go with our Ark of Truth caps and Ark of Truth boxers (coming soon). And then, look at who dropped by the office today: none other than Bob Picardo who is in town filming an episode of Stargate: Atlantis (The Seer).

Fondy is on a cooking tear – two dinners in a row! To mark the occasion, I have included pics of last night’s roast beef dinner.

Q&A –

Anonymous #1 writes: “Okra for or against?”

Answer: The first time I tried it, I was decidedly against. But there’s a Malaysian restaurant in town, Banana Leaf, that makes a great sambal okra – so I’ve changed my vote to “For”.

Anonymous #2 writes: “All the “oh they don’t advertise enough” and “the fans just won’t accept what we’re giving them” won’t fly if the series fails.”

Answer: Yet the fact is that after a six month lay-off, lack of any significant promotion, and previous airings throughout the world and on the internet, both Stargates have seen their numbers dip. It doesn’t take a genius to connect the dots.

M writes: “Are all your pugs boys?”

Answer: Maximus and Bubba are boys. Jelly is the little lady.

Haliyah writes: “How do you get a concept/story/script solicited so that it becomes legitimate and legal in the eyes of the show executives?”

Answer: It would have to be submitted through an agent. But in the case of Atlantis, we’re not currently looking for outside submissions as we have the back half of season four pretty much thought out.

Anonymous #3 writes: “On average, how many hits a day did u get in the past week?”

Answer: I average a little over 2000 visits a day.

Paula writes: “So what are you going to watch now that Amazing Race is over?”

Answer: The end of Survivor.

Edward4th writes: “I was driving through a cornish village this morning when an elderly gentleman wearing a flat cap and escorting three pugs on a leash crossed the road in front of me. Any relation?”

Answer: That was me.

Namiko writes: “I know you get on the treadmill every (is it EVERY?) morning for at least 30 minutes, but do you do strength training as well as cardio? And if so, what do you do? What about yoga?”

Answer: No yoga. I run every other day. On the days I don’t run, I work out with weights exercising two muscle groups, 3 exercises each, 3 sets of 8-10 reps, followed by some ab work.

Alipeeps writes: “Have you guys started work on the back 10 episodes yet?”

Answer: Yup. Martin is finishing up work on the second part of the mid-season two-parter. Alan is working on what like to call “the third part of the mid-season two-parter”. And Carl has started work on the relationships episode. He’ll be moving onto the cross-over episode once he’s done. Then there’s the two-part return of THAT character. Which brings us to episodes 17.

Carolina writes: “I started watching Iron Chef America thanks to your blog and I have a question, imagine yourself as a judge, sitting in your chair, waiting for the secret ingredient to be revelead, what ingredients would you be crosing your fingers over for a)Please let it be…? and b)Please let it not be…?”

Answer: Please let it be Battle Chocolate! Please let is not be Battle Garbanzo Beans! Thankfully they’ve already done the latter. And, come to think of it, I think they’ve already done the former as well.

Anjirika writes: “I personally think that you should pay more attention to the hard core fans- they are your loyal viewer-ship and probably make up most of the numbers.”

Answer: First of all, the number of hardcore fans are actually dwarfed by the multitude of casual viewers. As for listening to the hardcore fans, which hardcore fans would you be referring to? The hardcore fans that want the Shep-Weir ship or the ones that want to Shep-Teyla ship? The ones that want to see more Rodney or the ones that want to see less McKay? The ones that want to see more crossover or the ones that don’t want to see any crossover?

Anonymous #r writes: “Since you used focus groups to off Dr. Weir…”

Answer: We did?

  1. Oh. Well. Thank you for answering my question! I mostly lurk, because sometimes I’m a little afraid of your answers. 😉

Okay, so, here’s another one very closely related to my last question, and I’m sorry if I’m quickly becoming irritating: How do you get an agent? What do you even Google or search for in the Yellow Pages? I wouldn’t even know where to start…

  2. A reminder to all of the 2,000+ clicks you get here, and the people behind them, to check my comment yesterday and submit their ratings to mallozziblogeval@aol.com.

We’re off to a slow start. Ok, fine, we’re off to a no-start, as no responses have yet been received.

Actually, to make it easier, I’ll go cut and paste the 10 areas to be rated in a new comment in just a moment.

  3. “The hardcore fans that want the Shep-Weir ship or the ones that want to Shep-Teyla ship? The ones that want to see more Rodney or the ones that want to see less McKay? The ones that want to see more crossover or the ones that don’t want to see any crossover?”

HAHA! Brilliant! But, of course, the fan was refering to whatever little group she belongs to. Everytime I visit this blog, I’m more and more amazed at how fans of stargate are somewhat like hardcore members of political parties! They all think THEY are right and that EVERYONE will want what they want. I, for one, think you give ALL OF US a nice mix.

  4. …here are the items, categories, etc. to rate.

    1. Quality of post narrative
    2. Pictures
    3. Interaction with commenters
    4. Snark/sass
    5. Book Recommendations
    6. Food/restaurant reviews
    7. Work/life content balance
    8. Creativity
    9. Overall blog design
    10. Suffering fools

Rate them on a 1-5 scale, 5 being highest. And add a comment or two at the end for flavor.

Email to mallozziblogeval@aol.com and stay tuned for the results to be posted this coming Sunday.

  5. To Anonymous: All of us get a nice mix? Sure, unless you’re a fan of Carson or Elizabeth.

So Joe, any final number on how many episodes they’ll get each?

  6. I think Martin just likes writing scenes for Beckett ;D. When do you think Paul will begin shooting?

  7. Somehow, everything you wrote in this entry sounded in my mind’s ear as if you were speaking while running on a treadmill. Possibly the power of suggestion, since you mentioned your workout regimen?

Okra: Best breaded with egg/harina, quick-fried in canola, and served hot with a little dollop of Red Devil. Not possible, otherwise.

  8. I’m wondering how many of the anonymous comments about “Weir whingers” are fromm Shep whumpers, and how they’d feel if Shep was going, to be replaced by Browder.

The day that happens, Joe, you’d better take out life insurance, and lock yourself in your office, because they would be the most theatening and vocal of all fans.

  9. Joe,

Can you tell us how many episodes of Carter’s 14 that will be in the first half? Will she be in Missing? Maybe even offworld?

  10. All the people who are telling unhappy fans to get over it need to think outside the square. If enough people are pissed off for various reasons:
    **no Beckett
    **no Weir
    **rehashed SG1 scripts
    **Shep kirking..

    Whatever.

And ratings drop to the point where the show’s cancelled, you may not have a show to watch. Having Elizabeth or Carson in on a more regular basis is a small price to pay for that, don’t you think? And don’t think that their fans will just go okay, they’re gone, we’re over it, we’ll watch it anyway. They won’t. If there are enough of them, you may not have anything to watch at all when it comes to SGA.

  11. I think you should listen to the hard-core fans that want more McKay, more Michael, much less of everyone else, and would like to see the show turned into a 70’s style sitcom, where Michael and McKay move to Philidelphia, get an apartment, and start a catering business. You could even change the show’s name to “Rodney and the Wraith”.

  12. Joe,

Sci-Fi has announced “Ani-Monday”, where they’ll be running a block of anime which they’re calling “original programming.” Any thoughts? Good move, bad move? Creative? Desperate? Personally, I think it’s just a further dilution of the network’s image and brand, much in the same vein as A&E’s downgrade. They went from Biography and Spooks to Dogg the Bounty Hunter and Gene Simmons. How do you feel about the changing face of Atlantis’ home?

    CmS1977

  13. Joe, we will fight just as hard to keep SGA on the air as we did with Stargate. I know, the thought, “We’re doomed”, just went through your head. But, I am sure that if you have any suggestions for us, that might work, we will be happy to do what we can.

    SAVE SGA!!!

Hey Joe, what do these translate to?

    SG-1
    – 1.402 million viewers
    – 0.9/2 HH
    – 0.6/2 A18-49

    Atlantis
    – 1.392 million viewers
    – 0.9/2 HH
    – 0.5/2 A18-49

    It translates to –

After almost three seasons Atlantis has been unable to beat the numbers of a ten year old show that has had significant cast changes in the last two years (and the loss of all the people who posted on GW at the beginning of season nine that they would never watch SG1 again).

Changes have to be made. No matter how many “we love her” posts are written, Wier is out as leader.

She just doesn’t make viewers care enough about her or her team to make then come back week after week and bring some friends along too. The numbers prove it.

And in the end it’s the ratings that matter.

  15. I’ll reiterate my qs !
Any chance of seeing Jack in Atlantis next season ?
How were the ratings for “Tao of Rodney” and “Shroud”

  16. How do the ratings of SG-1 and SGA in non-US locations impact/affect the success of the shows? Another way to ask this is: if the two shows are popular outside the US, does that play any kind of role in whether the shows are successes? Are there more than 1 million non-US viewers?

  17. Joe is there any chance of seeing an atlantis recon team that doesnt have its members from the North American Region such as the British SAS etc? Also is there chance of seeing the New Zealand flag on an atlantis uniform?

  18. You’ve probably already answered this, but what’s your favorite scene in 200? Is there a scene the cast or crew particularly liked? Did everyone have as much fun writing/directing/acting in it as it seemed?
I freakin’ love the whole thing, no matter how many times I watch it. I’m suffering through finals right now, and I just watched it during a study break and laughed my ass off. So thanks for some great finals procrastination TV!

  19. Haliyah said: How do you get an agent?
Try http://www.wga.org to find an agent.

I’m sorry I must be really confused. I thought this comment section was to write comments based upon the authors entry and experience, not debate own personal SGA character preference between each other. Joe’s blog is about JOE and while SGA makes up some of who he is – it is not the begin all and end all.

Joe, have you ever tried an affrogato with pistachio ice cream? Yum!

  20. “Changes have to be made. No matter how many “we love her” posts are written, Wier is out as leader.

In the end it’s the ratings that matter, yes, and the ratings of AT and co without RDA weren’t enough to keep SG1 going. People were annoyed enough to stop watching when it was HIS CHOICE to go. What makes you think adding Tapping to SGA is going to boost ratings?

Why everyone’s seeing Weir as the weak link is beyond me. It’s all personal perspective. For me, Teyla’s boring. Ronon’s boring. Rodney’s annoying. Shep, Weir and Beckett were the ones who kept me watching, and without two of the three, what’s there to watch for anymore?

It’s also very amusing that you’re reading this as changes have to be made because of the ratings, while Joe’s blaming downloading and bad advertising.

Ratings will tell in the end. However I can’t for the life of me see how the fans of one character (Carter) can make up for the loss of two characters (Beckett and Weir) EXPECIALLY when a lot of Atlantis fans moved over to the show from SG1 because they were sick of the lineup on SG1.

  21. “She just doesn’t make viewers care enough about her or her team to make then come back week after week and bring some friends along too. “

She doesn’t make us care enough about her or her team? So you’re admitting people don’t care about the team, either? Gee, maybe JM and his cronies should dump Rodney or Shep. They are, of course, front and center in the team. They must be responsible for it too. Why don’t we just get rid of all of them and replace them with the SG1 cast? That’s going to get people watching. NOT!

  22. Joe writes: “I have eaten a Norwegian cheese. What other dishes are typically Norwegian?”

Really? What cheese did you try? Was is a goat cheese? Was it white or brown?

Lots of fish is Norwegian. My favourite would be gravlaks (my dictionary translate it with cured salmon, basically it’s half rotten salmon with some spices), I put that on a lefse (that’s sort of a tortilla made from potato) and put some sour cream, onion and beetroot on it. And voila, yummy! And smoked salmon is yummy. And fresh codfish with it’s liver and roe. And we have have a salted and dried ham that we eat with a 1 mm thin crispy bread and a porridge made from sour cream. You can eat whale-meat, personally, I don’t. I think the national dish is fårikål, that’s lamb boiled with cabbage, tastes much less boring than it sounds. Oooh, and lutefisk, that is codfish that have been soked in lye for a while, also better than it sounds. 😛 Yes, we have lots of food, Norwegian things are too little known out there in the big world! But come, come to our beautiful country, walk in our mountains and go on a cruise in our fjords, see the whales swim in the water, see the midnight sun, visit some stave churches and old Viking stuff, climb a glacier or two and eat lots of fish! And please do try to convince some Norwegian TV-channel to start sending Stargate so that we will be more than a handful Stargatefans in Norway?? 🙂

The day that happens, Joe, you’d better take out life insurance, and lock yourself in your office, because they would be the most theatening and vocal of all fans.

Well, as this Shep whumper, among other things, signs her name and doesn’t go anonymous, not this one. Why bring other groups into this? Do you feel, in some way, that by hitting out at other fans that it makes you look better? Because it doesn’t. It makes you look desperate and a trouble maker. Most people don’t respect poster like that, especially, when yet again, they go anonymous while naming another group.

After a thread at GW was opened by a poster trying to sort out and understand the fan divisions, I’d personally hoped this fandom division could end. With posters such as yourself posting posts like the above, that’s just not going to happen.

As for BB replacing JF? Well, several things come to mind. JF appears to be incredibly popular as Sheppard. To lose the leading man on any show is problematic. If Joe wanted to leave, he’d have my support. If he was given the boot, I’d be upset, but I sure as hell wouldnt come whining and moaning here every five minutes.

Firstly, that’d be annoying, secondly it’d make me look desperate, and thirdly some things are out of my control and I can’t hope to change such things.

Finally, at the end of the day, Stargate:Atlantis is a television show. If, it no longer entertained me, I simply wouldn’t watch. I’d give it a try with BB instead of JF, if it didn’t hold my interest, or was too painful to watched without Joe, I’d move on.

  24. Hi Joe, the last post was from me. I stupidly pressed the wrong option before I’d signed my name. So, the post answering the brave and corageous anonymous was from Linzi, if you could add my name, that’d be great, if it’s too much trouble, then please allow this post. I’d hate to go anonymous and not put a name to my post. I also didn’t get a chance to edit or
check my post, so apologies if there are any errors in the spelling or grammer. Thanks!

  26. Have you been to Invermere B.C. because i live in OZ and have a teacher from there.

  27. That is an awesome shirt. Any chance of making it purchasable? I would buy twenty!…or maybe just one since that is how many torsos I have, but if I were to genetically mutate to have twenty torsos then I would most assuredly purchase twenty of those shirts. So at least that’s something.

Also I just wanted to say how much I love the show and, more specifically, your work on it. You catch a lot of crap from a lot of people and you handle it quite well but I’m guessing it can get a little tiresome constantly hearing about your (perceived) mistakes and never hearing about your many accomplishments. So, thank you for giving me such an entertaining show(s) to watch for FREE! (Though I do own all nine SG-1 seasons and both SGA seasons that is merely because of my pack-rat mentality) I could go on and on about how much I appreciate the work you have done to make these shows happen but I’ll just say thanks and move on.

P.S. Congratulations on becoming show runner. From what little I know of season 4 it sounds like it could be even better than season 3…which was amazing.

  28. I cannot understand the low ratings, because this is the best season of Atlantis, with very powerful episodes like Sateda, Irresistible or Common Ground. And now, Tao of Rodney. Great job, guys. What a classic and memorable episode! I don’t know if it’s intentional or not of you, but so far this is the best Atlantis “shippy” episode. Actually it’s kind of cute-weird, because always I had believed that the relationship between McKay and Weir was rather almost brothers (shrugs)…
Kudos to David Hewlett, of course, too for David Nykl and Torri Higginson. And Major kudos to Martin Wood. And you can say to Damian Kindler that he is a real genius, please? What a tight and clever script; the scene where McKay reads Sheppard and Weir minds is simply awesome.
Thanks for the lay-outs of Atlantis. Always I appreciate this stuff.
About the ratings; I do not want to sound too negative, but which are the chances for renewal with 1.2/1.3?

Wonder no more – please feel free to stop by the GW Shep whump thread and ask us (oh no posting as anon you are obviously too scared!!!)- I would assume that this is something that we would be able to help you with though rather that Mr Mallozzi!!! 🙂

To be honest if Joe F was going to be replaced in SGA I would leave the fandom and look forward to what Joe does next and support him there. Why would I want him to be kept in a show where for whatever reason either he was not happy or TPTB did not feel that he was right and therefore not appreciated. If I was sacked from a job – would I want to go back – I really dont think so….unless I didnt think I could ever find another one! I think Joe is an awesome actor and I have every faith that after SGA he will have a wonderful career.

As for hinting that Mr Mallozzi wouldnt be safe if this were to happen because we are Shep whumpers – for goodness sake! Are you trying to say that we are thugs? You obviously do not understand why we enjoy Shep whump so please keep your misguided assumptions to yourself!

Okay and finally a question for Mr Mallozzi, do you already know what is going to be happening in the season finale or does it depend on whether you get a s5?

  30. Gee Joe, after reading some of the comments here I’m so glad I’m not in your shoes, a)they wouldn’t fit and b)I don’t like high heels.

Ah, the delicious irony in an anonymous poster casting malicious aspersions at other anonymous posters.. 😉

    For the record:

    A) most of the Shep Whumpers who post on here (like me), sign their names to their posts – I know this because I know their names! 🙂 We also don’t post only about Shep whump because, for most of us, our interest in the show goes beyond one narrow aspect of it (that’s not to say we don’t enjoy that aspect and enjoy being thoroughly silly about it from time to time, but it’s generally not the sole reason why we watch the show).

    B) I’m not quite sure why you’ve singled out Shep whumpers as being more fed up than any other fans with people complaining about Weir’s reduced role? I’d also
be interested to see what evidence you have for your authoritative statement that Shep whumpers are, or would be, “the most threatening” of fans? You seem very sure that Shep whumpers would storm Bridge Studios and practice some whumping on Joe if denied their Shep whump… how do you know this? Have you succeeded in building that time machine that so many fans have been desperately hoping for? If so, can I borrow it to skip forward a few months and watch Doppelganger? 🙂

I personally find one of the saddest things about fandom is the way people let their preferences/interests become so divisive. Since when does liking one character mean you have to hate/bash another? Whatever happened to live and let live? The fact that you feel the need to lash out blindly – without even any kind of reason or proof (as your entire arguement, if it can be called that, is theoretical) – at a group of fans just because you’re not happy about one aspect of the show is just…. well… inexpresibly sad.

    Hi again Joe!

Now I’ve done the school run and got back, I can post the rest of what I wanted to reply to Anonymous above. If you don’t want to authorise another rambling post of mine, I well understand! Let’s hope I don’t press the publish button by mistake again!!!

I just wanted to add, that, certainly this Shep whumper would NEVER threaten anyone about anything, unless it involved the safety and well-being, and was in the defense of her kids.

SGA is a TV show, and the Sheppard fans, both thunkers and whumpers I converse with and have met, are generally the most easy going and tolerant bunch of people. They also don’t take the show so seriously that it is the only things in their lives.

Why ‘Anonymous’ thinks that any Sheppard fan would be threatening is beyond me. Don’t judge others by the way you behave, Anonymous.

I feel so sorry for Anonymous. To have such anger and vitriol against a group of posters is so futile and pathetic.

Amongst the whumpers I know, there are Shep/Weir shippers, Shep/Teyla shippers, Shep/McKay slashers, big Weir fans, those that don’t like Weir much, and those that are indifferent to Weir. There are also non-shippers, or those that just don’t care about much except their favourite character – Sheppard. To assertain that one group is a disliker of a certain character is not only a massive assumption, labelling a whole group of people as having the same likes and dislikes, it’s also completely inaccurate.

If Anon’s reason for posting was to further the fight for Weir’s character, then she/he is going about it the wrong way.

If Anon was trying to create further divisions in the fandom, Im afraid they’re wasting their time.

The thread PegasusSGA opened at GW to try and get different sections of the fandom to communicate with one another has shown that it’s a small lunatic fringe, like Anon here, who cause divisions, and that they don’t have the courage to post their name. Fans just aren’t going to let that this attempt to cause divisions happen anymore. We realise it’s one or two very bitter people in areas of the fandom who are unhappy people who just want to cause trouble, and that they don’t speak for any genre within the fandom.

We love the show and want to be entertained by it. Not just one aspect of it, but many.

Sorry to take up blog space Joe!

  34. If Paul McGillion has signed for 4 episodes for season 4 and they are going to be well into the back half of the season does this bode well for him being a regular in season 5?? (If there is a season 5)

When I first heard about him coming back for only a few episodes I assumed it would be like Michael Shanks did in season 6 but maybe not.

  35. Joe,

I was a late comer to the SG family – I started watching at the beginning of Season 2 of Atlantis. I have to confess that I’ve never seen an entire episode of SG-1 – when I started watching SGA, trying to catch up to eight seasons of SG-1 seemed very daunting.

Keeping that in mind, I was a bit surprised to discover that the SG universe included some very “Star Trek-y” transporter technology. How’d that come about, and wasn’t it a bit risky?

  36. I sincerely hope that Ani-Monday is not just a rumor. I don’t understand why it would be considered outside their programming since most anime series have heavy science fiction plots (like Ghost in the Shell and the Gundam series) or fantasy elements (Bleach or Trinity Blood). It certainly is more in line with their concept than the completely puzzling (and highly annoying) addition of *pro-wrestling* to the Tuesday night line-up. Anime is not “cartoons” and many of them are definitely not “childrens’ programming”.

Have they said what they will airing? I am hoping for a series or two that I haven’t seen yet.

  37. . . .if Shep was going, to be replaced by Browder.
Lordy, I would love to see that. Get rid of the ShepBore. I wouldn’t mind that switch at all!

  38. My Goodness that roast looks yummy! Are those large cloves of garlic or baby onions? And, does Fondy offer a take-out service? I’d like to place an order!

Oh yeah! David Hewlett and Connor Trinneer every week! Don’t have to change SGA though. I’m sure with enough chocolate we could get Joe to write us a backdoor pilot for this…

  43. Hi Joe,

Back after season 8 had finished filming Michael Greenburg was at a convention in the U.K. He talked about Daniel’s popularity and possibly either giving Sam and Daniel their own show or moving them over to Atlantis. At the time a season 9 had not been announced and the prospect of Sam and Daniel moving to Atlantis or being in a spin-off IMO was exciting. Therefore, judging by what Michael Greenburg said, I know that you guys have considered moving Sam and/or Daniel over to Atlantis for sometime.

It wasn’t a month later when the news of Ben Browder joining Stargate was announced, you were on G.W. assuring a Daniel fan that yes Michael Shanks had signed for season 9, and I’m sitting back thinking who is Ben Browder. I had never heard of Farscape or Ben. Having accepted the fact that Rick probably wasn’t coming back my next thought was what about Amanda and Michael.

Rick was able to attract a mainstream audience just like Beau Bridges. Although Rick/Jack was the star, the characters of Sam,Daniel and Teal’c became very popular especially Sam and Daniel and they still are. The official Stargate magazine lists Sam and Daniel as the top Stargate female/male characters with Daniel taking 45% of the male vote.

I guess what I am trying to say is that even a number of years ago Michael Greenburg realised just how popular that Sam and Daniel were and talked about putting them on Atlantis so I seriously doubt that the decision to move Sam over to Atlantis has anything to do with getting rid of Weir.

  44. Hey Joe! Quick question:

You mentioned that there’s a ‘subtle’ clue in one of the latter S3 episodes. After they all air, will you tell us which episode it’s in?

    -Lauren

  45. Joe,

I understand that you can’t listen to particular fan groups when coming up with storylines for the show. But what about the actors and the roles they play, i.e., their places in the credits? Don’t you have to, for instance, give Joe Flanigan more storylines than someone who comes after him in the credits?

If so, why has Ben Browder’s role not been equivalent to Joe’s role? He should have the largest role on the show, simply because of where he is in the credits, shouldn’t he? Why has that not been the case for him when it was the case for RDA and also for Joe?

  46. do you have a double!!!!!??i was walking around a dublin (ireland) shopping centre today and a guy (the spitting image of you!!) dressed in a very sharp black suit and shirt and tie walked past me!!!!

i your opinion do you think its harder to write stuff for sci-fi shows than some of the main stream shows?? some shows these days base their episodes on stuff that has happened(incidents etc..not directly but..). do you think its ‘that’ much harder for sci fi show writers?

  47. Is there any chance that “A Dog’s breakfast” being shown on movie night in Atlantis?

Are your pugs siblings? Do they fight? Is Jelly a ‘lady’ or is she a girl thug? I have a girl cat (Merlin) but she ain’t no lady. Her brother (Frankie) is suffering from a little ‘girly’ tap to his muzzle – visit to Vet last night.

  48. As you go down your list of Q&A is ‘anonymous 1’ the same ‘anonymous 1’ in every list or do all the people called anonymous get rotated so that there is no favouritism. A person who is always number one might start to think you like them more than all the other anonymous people.

  49. Joe,
Just wondering, how do we (the fans) get a T-shirt? Also, just wanted to tell you I think your blog is great. I really enjoy it!!

    Thanks,
    flowergirl

  50. Hey Joe

Do you ever get over to Naniamo or Victoria B.C.? I know it’s only one straight over from you so I figured you had to have tried to cuisine there at some point.

I hope I’m not repeating a question as I’m way behind on your blog but any chance Jack will be in Atlantis this year?

  51. “…Also is there chance of seeing the New Zealand flag on an atlantis uniform?”

Yeah, and how about an African or two?

We have some really colourful flags in this part of the world, and I bet you have a few dark skinned extra’s kicking around. 🙂

  52. I say get rid of Sheppard and Teyla instead of Beckett and Weir. It would shut up all the shippers and get rid of the two most boring characters, cause face it, they are both pretty but after that, there isn’t much more to them. And since Beckett would stay, we don’t need Jewel Staite, so we can have more of Major Lorne, who is way cooler than Sheppard any day.

  53. Joe, if I ask you very, very, very nicely, with a cherry on top, will you answer one question for me? I’m willing to send chocolate if that’ll help….? 😉

I’m ridiculously impatient to see Doppelganger as, from the information Rob gave to GW about it etc, it sounds like a really great episode… so here’s my one question:

Given what we know of the plot of Doppelganger… will we get to see Sheppard in bed? 😀

  54. I am seriously amused and surrpised from the amount of bashing that happens on this blog. I suppose it comes with the territory.

Can you imagine an episode where you tried to be fair to everyone. I suppose 200 is similar to the idea however it is a fun and crazy episode. But, in this not-yet-aired episode, each and every slash/ship/snark/serious/whump/thunk moments would be in every single scene. I think someone’s brain would explode.

I suppose I could be regarded in some of those categories, but I however am enjoying the route the show is taking despite my yays or nays of certain relationships.

Thanks for the recs, I’ll be checking them out soon.

    -JJ

  55. Oh by the way in regards to my comment I meant fans bashing characters and the show. Just thought I’d make that clear.

    Cheers,
    JJ

  56. You want to know why Ben’s role hasn’t been bigger? Take a look at the Fan Comments on Sci-Fi’s new Stargate SG-1 page. There’s dozens of pages there, with an absolute majority talking about how they miss RDA and how things just weren’t the same after he left. This isn’t a fandom thing, there’s plenty of comments from ordinary viewers. They miss Rick, they miss Sam/Jack ship, and they miss the old team. TPTB realized (too late, mind you) that the audience just doesn’t want Cam Mitchell in their Stargate.

  57. Lordy, I would love to see that. Get rid of the ShepBore. I wouldn’t mind that switch at all!

I wouldn’t mind that either! John Sheppard may be pretty to look at, hence his popularity, but he’s the most underdeveloped lead character I’ve seen. Yawn.

  58. Sheppard’s not boring, Sheppard’s fun! And I don’t even care if he never takes his shirt off (sorry, cheeky lil devil). I admit Teyla’s character could use some development, but she has potential, and I have high hopes. She’s not just pretty, she’s smart and dangerous. Weir just narrows her eyes at people and thinks a lot. She’d be much more fun if she was fired as head of Atlantis and became just part of the expedition, as an expert on Ancient or something like that. Maybe that’s the plan? I’d go for that. Less screen time, but better role.

  59. when you were 18 what did you want to do career wise? Were you the kind of person that was totally focused on their career, or did it just sorta happen to work out the way it has? Does working on atlantis live up to your expectations (at 18) or are there more things you would have liked to achieve by now? Also what would you like to have achieved work wise/personally by the time you retire?

PS.. I think you are doing a great job! THANKS :o)

  60. Mr. Mallozzi, I have been lurking around your blog for a long time and I have been thinking for just as long about asking you, do you ever get tired of constantly defending you and your partner’s brilliant imaginations and creations?
Don’t you ever just want to say “Hey, buddy, where’s your longest running consecutive US Sci-fi programme?”

    Whingers, whumpers, shippers, Oh My!
Doesn’t all the criticism and complaining drive you crazy? Or are you, like me, within walking distance?

I love both programs and everyone at Bridge Studios has my utmost respect and gratification for allowing me to escape reality for a couple of hours each week.
    Thank you.

  61. *steals that t-shirt*

I don’t think I’ve seen an answer to this question, Joe (and if it’s been answred long ago, forgive this brain fart), so here it is: What kind of music do you listen to? Are you a run-the-gamut kind of guy, or do you tend to zero in on one genre and/or artist?

  62. *waves at Joe*

This will only take a minute, Joe, be right with you.

Crazymom is obviously not feeling well :p and says:
Sheppard’s not boring, Sheppard’s fun! And I don’t even care if he never takes his shirt off (sorry, cheeky lil devil).

In an attempt to not go to war with the whole of the fandom, I shall concede your first point crazymom. As for the second point you’ve raised. I only have this to say. Wash your mouth out! 😉 Shep not shirtless? Ever? 😮 That’s it, you’ve riled me now. Anon you’re words can never hurt me, but…Crazymom! I thought you were all for shirtless Shep…. *iz crushed* My hopes are dashed, the majority of fans wanting to see shirtless Shep is now just a minority. Tissue anyone?

Joe. I need your expert advice on this serious matter. Should I continue with my quest or should I just give up now and save myself the heartache of just having Shep… *tries to bring herself to say the words*… clothed. Do you think it’s worth doing a poll, Joe, or maybe get a focus group involved. I’ve heard good things about them. But you know what Joe, i’m going to leave it in your capable hands. Because you’re a very wise and kind man. Thankyou ;o)

  63. Ah the Sandman series was the first set of comic books I’ve ever read, and I was hooked…… I second that recommendation, absolutely wonderful.
